Early life and amateur career

Early life

Jared Michael Young was born on July 9, 1995, in Prince George, British Columbia, Canada.[11] He is the younger son of Randy and Dana Young, with an older brother named Tanner.[12][13] Growing up in the remote northern community of Prince George, where hockey traditionally dominates youth sports, Young was exposed to baseball early through family influences.[14][15] Young's initial interest in baseball was sparked by his paternal grandfather, Lyle Young, who offered him 25 cents for hitting a ball to the fence during T-ball games at Peterson Park starting at age five.[16] This incentive motivated the young Jared, who quickly showed promise by smashing deep outfield shots in Little League and even pitching effectively at age six in a game at Volunteer Park.[16] Lyle, a devoted fan who attended tournaments and traveled with the family, played a pivotal role in nurturing Jared's passion, especially after the death of Lyle's wife, Loretta, when baseball outings provided emotional support for the family.[16] As a bat boy for his brother Tanner's teams during provincial summers, Young gained further immersion in the sport despite the challenges of limited facilities and competition in a hockey-centric region.[16] An exceptional athlete, Young also excelled in hockey as a goaltender, making the Team B.C. shortlist at age 14 for the 2011 Canada Winter Games, though a knee injury ended that pursuit.[16] At 16, he moved to Kelowna to access better baseball development opportunities through the Okanagan Athletics program, marking a transition in his upbringing while highlighting the scarcity of elite training in northern British Columbia.[17][18]

High school career

Young attended Prince George Secondary School in Prince George, British Columbia, where he initially developed his baseball skills while participating in both hockey and the sport.[13] At age 16, he transferred to Kelowna Secondary School in Kelowna, British Columbia, to join the Okanagan Athletics in the British Columbia Premier Baseball League (BCPBL), an elite amateur circuit for high school-aged players.[16] However, feeling homesick, he returned to Prince George Secondary for his Grade 11 year, playing for the Prince George Knights high school team.[16] During his time with the Knights, Young contributed to their success in regional play, helping the team win the double-A provincial championship at Citizen Field in 2012.[16] He then returned to Kelowna Secondary and resumed playing with the Okanagan Athletics in the BCPBL, participating in exhibition tours such as a 12-day, 24-game series in Arizona with the Langley Blaze in March 2014.[19] In the BCPBL, Young posted a .309 batting average over 33 games in 2013, establishing himself as a consistent hitter.[19] The following season in 2014, he improved markedly, batting .439 with seven doubles, two triples, and nine RBI across 12 games, ranking third in the league in average and fourth in RBI.[19] These performances drew attention from U.S. college scouts, leading to a partial four-year scholarship offer from Minot State University, an NCAA Division II program, where he committed to play second base starting in late August 2014.[19] The recruitment process emphasized his contact hitting and versatility, influencing his decision to pursue higher education and baseball in North Dakota rather than other options.[19]

College career

Young began his college baseball career at Minot State University in 2015, where he played as a freshman for the Beavers in the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference (NSIC).[6] He hit .398 with 5 home runs and 35 RBI, leading the team in batting average and extra-base hits (25).[20] These performances earned him All-NSIC Second Team honors.[20] Seeking greater exposure at the junior college level, Young transferred to Connors State College in Warner, Oklahoma, for the 2016 season.[5] As a sophomore for the Cowboys in the NJCAA Bi-State Conference, he posted a .480 batting average with 11 home runs and 54 RBI over 57 games.[21] His standout junior college campaign included a .732 slugging percentage and positioned him among national leaders in hits (95).[21] Following his success at Connors State, Young transferred to NCAA Division I Old Dominion University to continue his development and improve his professional prospects.[7] In 2017, as a junior for the Monarchs in Conference USA, he batted .367 with 7 home runs and 34 RBI, while leading the team in runs scored (57), triples (4), stolen bases (9), and on-base plus slugging (1.021).[8] He also set a program record for hit-by-pitches (18).[8] Young's contributions helped Old Dominion to a 37-21 record, and he earned ABCA/Rawlings All-American Third Team honors, along with Perfect Game/Rawlings Honorable Mention All-American recognition.[22][7] Overall, Young's college career across three institutions showcased his progression from Division II to junior college and Division I, culminating in his selection by the Chicago Cubs in the 15th round (465th overall) of the 2017 MLB Draft out of Old Dominion.[23]

Professional career

Chicago Cubs (2017–2023)

Young signed with the Chicago Cubs as a 15th-round pick in the 2017 MLB Draft out of Old Dominion University.[4] He made his professional debut that season with the Single-A Eugene Emeralds of the Northwest League, where he batted .257 with a .311 on-base percentage and .336 slugging percentage, including 1 home run and 15 RBI over 54 games.[2] In 2018, Young split time between the High-A Myrtle Beach Pelicans and Single-A South Bend Cubs, combining for a .300 batting average, .357 on-base percentage, and .485 slugging percentage, with 16 home runs and 76 RBI in 120 games.[24] His breakout performance earned him the Chicago Cubs Minor League Player of the Year award, as well as Midwest League Player of the Month honors in June and July while with South Bend.[25] Young advanced to Double-A with the Tennessee Smokies in 2019, posting a .235 batting average, .297 on-base percentage, and .319 slugging percentage, along with 5 home runs and 57 RBI in 123 games.[26] Following the season, he participated in the Arizona Fall League with the Mesa Solar Sox, appearing in 14 games.[27] The 2020 minor league season was canceled due to the COVID-19 pandemic, preventing Young from playing.[1] Returning in 2021, Young split the year between Double-A Tennessee and Triple-A Iowa Cubs, combining for a .290 batting average, .361 on-base percentage, and .471 slugging percentage, with 9 home runs and 40 RBI across 81 games.[2] In 2022, Young spent most of the season at Triple-A Iowa, where he hit .230 with a .311 on-base percentage and .420 slugging percentage, including 17 home runs and 59 RBI in 108 games.[2] He made his MLB debut with the Cubs on September 16, 2022, against the New York Mets, going 1-for-4 with a double in his first game; over six total appearances that year, he batted .263 (5-for-19).[1][28] Young began 2023 back at Triple-A Iowa, hitting .326 with a .426 on-base percentage and .605 slugging percentage, 13 home runs, and 45 RBI in 52 games before his promotion. In 16 MLB games with the Cubs that season, he batted .186 with 2 home runs and 8 RBI.[29] Throughout his Cubs tenure, Young demonstrated positional versatility, primarily at first base but also seeing time in the outfield, third base, and second base to provide infield and corner flexibility.[30]

St. Louis Cardinals (2024)

In early 2024, following his waiver claim by the St. Louis Cardinals from the Chicago Cubs the previous November, Jared Young was optioned to the Triple-A Memphis Redbirds at the conclusion of spring training on March 23.[1] He was subsequently designated for assignment on March 27 but cleared waivers and was outrighted to Memphis on March 29, allowing him to remain in the organization as a depth piece.[26] Young served as a versatile utility player for the Redbirds, primarily appearing at third base and in the outfield while providing left-handed plate production off the bench.[21] In 74 games during the season, he posted a strong slash line of .285/.411/.506, highlighted by 11 home runs, 35 RBI, and 6 stolen bases, demonstrating improved power and on-base skills in limited action.[2] His performance included notable moments, such as a 114.5 mph two-run homer on June 13, underscoring his potential as a contact hitter with pop.[31] Mid-season roster adjustments led to Young's departure from the Cardinals system. On July 23, he was placed on the temporarily inactive list, possibly due to a minor issue or trade discussions, before being released by Memphis on July 30 to facilitate his move abroad.[26] At the time of his release, Young was hitting .284/.409/.505, but the organization's depth and his non-roster status contributed to the decision.[32]

Doosan Bears (2024)

On July 23, 2024, following a strong start in Triple-A with the St. Louis Cardinals where he hit .284/.409/.505, Jared Young signed a $300,000 contract with the Doosan Bears of the Korea Baseball Organization (KBO) as a midseason replacement for outfielder Henry Ramos.[33][9][32] In 38 regular-season games with Doosan, Young posted impressive statistics of .326 batting average, .420 on-base percentage, and .660 slugging percentage, along with 10 home runs and 39 runs batted in, showcasing his power at Jamsil Baseball Stadium.[34][21] In his first game on July 31, he went 5-for-6 with two home runs and eight RBI, tying a KBO record for a foreign player in a single game.[35] He quickly adapted to the KBO's faster-paced style, including shorter pitch clocks and a more offense-friendly environment compared to Major League Baseball, while leveraging his positional versatility across corner outfield and infield roles to provide defensive flexibility for the Bears.[36][37] Young's contributions bolstered Doosan's lineup during their push for the playoffs, where he appeared in wild card postseason games as the Bears were eliminated by the KT Wiz.[38][39] After the season concluded, Doosan declined to renew Young's contract, leaving him as a free agent eligible to return to MLB or pursue other opportunities.[40]

New York Mets (2025–present)

On December 16, 2024, the New York Mets signed Jared Young to a one-year major league contract to provide infield depth, particularly at first base, amid uncertainty surrounding free agent Pete Alonso.[41][42] Young began the 2025 season with the Triple-A Syracuse Mets, where he appeared in 30 games, batting .200 with six home runs and 14 RBI while demonstrating versatility across multiple positions, drawing on his prior experience in the Korea Baseball Organization for added positional flexibility.[2] Young was first recalled to the Mets' major league roster on May 24, 2025, to cover for an injury to outfielder Brandon Nimmo, marking his initial stint with the big club that season.[43] He returned to Syracuse after a brief appearance but was called up again on July 11, 2025, to replace the injured Jesse Winker, providing utility support off the bench.[44] In limited major league action across 23 games, Young hit .186 with four home runs and six RBI, posting a .722 OPS in 47 plate appearances, primarily serving as a depth player capable of filling roles at first base, outfield, and designated hitter.[3][4] A highlight of Young's Mets tenure came on June 15, 2025, when he made his major league pitching debut in a blowout loss to the Tampa Bay Rays at Citi Field; as a position player, he recorded one out while allowing one hit over one-third of an inning.[45] Throughout the season, Young contributed leadership in the Syracuse clubhouse, mentoring younger prospects while maintaining his utility role, though he spent the majority of the year in the minors to preserve roster spots for established players.[46]

International career

2023 World Baseball Classic

Jared Young was named to the Team Canada roster for the 2023 World Baseball Classic on February 9, 2023, as announced by Baseball Canada.[47] This selection represented his first major international tournament appearance for his native country.[5] In Pool C play at LoanDepot Park in Miami, Young started all four of Canada's games, appearing at first base, left field, and as the designated hitter.[1] Over 14 at-bats, he recorded two hits for a .143 batting average, including one home run and two RBI.[48] A highlight of Young's tournament came on March 13, 2023, against the United States, when he hit a solo home run to right field off pitcher Lance Lynn in the top of the second inningCanada's lone run in a 12-1 mercy-rule loss.[49] Canada finished pool play 2-2, with victories over Great Britain (18-8 on March 12) and Colombia (5-0 on March 14), but losses to the United States and Mexico (10-3 on March 15) eliminated them from quarterfinal contention.[50]

2025 WBSC Copa América

On November 4, 2025, Baseball Canada announced the 27-man roster for the national team's participation in the 2025 WBSC Copa América, including utility player Jared Young as one of four Major League Baseball-affiliated athletes selected.[51] Young, who hails from Prince George, British Columbia, represented his hometown and brought his versatile skill set—capable of playing first base, third base, and the corner outfield positions—to the squad, marking his continued commitment to international play following his appearance in the 2023 World Baseball Classic.[52] The tournament was set to feature 12 nations divided into two groups, with all games hosted in La Chorrera, Panama, from November 13 to 22, 2025; Canada was placed in Group B alongside host Panama, Puerto Rico, Colombia, Brazil, and Argentina, competing in a round-robin format at Estadio Mariano Rivera to vie for one of four qualification spots to the 2027 Pan American Games.[51] To prepare, the team planned a three-day training camp from November 7 to 10 at the Toronto Blue Jays' Player Development Complex in Dunedin, Florida, leveraging the longstanding partnership between Baseball Canada and the Blue Jays organization, which supports national team programs through facilities and development initiatives.[51][53] Young's inclusion highlighted his value as an MLB-experienced contributor, drawing from his recent performance in the New York Mets organization during the 2025 season, where he demonstrated reliability in both offensive production and defensive flexibility.[54] Expectations for his role centered on providing depth and leadership, particularly as a left-handed bat and multi-positional option in a roster blending veterans and emerging talents under manager Ernie Whitt.[51] However, on November 8, 2025, organizers announced the postponement of the event due to a breach of contract by the private promoter responsible for its execution, creating uncertainty for the selected players.[55] Baseball Canada expressed deep disappointment in a statement on November 10, 2025, noting the hard work invested by athletes like Young and the program's staff, while affirming commitment to rescheduling the qualifier in compliance with WBSC Americas directives.[56] On November 13, 2025, WBSC Americas president confirmed that the tournament is postponed but not cancelled and will be held before May 2026.[57]
