from Wikipedia

James Roy Paschal, Jr. (December 5, 1926 – July 5, 2004) was an American NASCAR Grand National Series and Winston Cup Series driver.

Key Information

Career summary

[edit]

Paschal won twenty-five races and twelve poles over his career.[1] Elected to the "Stock Car Racing Hall of Fame" in 1977, he won the World 600 in 1964 and 1967 at Charlotte Speedway. He competed in the first 18 Southern 500s (1950–1967) and won 16 of 73 Grand American races (1969–1972). Paschal's 1967 win in the World 600 established a race record of 335 laps led, which would not be broken until 2016 when Martin Truex Jr. led 392 laps.[2]

Paschal's strongest racing was found on short tracks where he would finish an average of 11th place. Paschal would find his weakness on road courses, where the sharp corners and the right turns would cause him to finish in an agonizing 27th place on average.[3]

Paschal has the most wins in the Cup series among drivers who are not in the NASCAR Hall of Fame and are eligible.

Retirement

[edit]

After retiring from racing in 1972, Paschal owned and operated a trucking company and farmed both cattle and poultry.

Death

[edit]

Paschal died on July 5, 2004, in Atlanta, Georgia following a battle with cancer.[citation needed]

Paschal was buried near Jackson Creek, North Carolina.[citation needed]

''Jim Paschal'' is an American stock car racing driver known for his enduring career in NASCAR's Grand National and Winston Cup Series, where he competed from 1949 to 1972 and earned 25 victories, including two wins in the prestigious World 600. Born on December 5, 1926, in High Point, North Carolina, Paschal participated in the inaugural NASCAR Strictly Stock race at Charlotte Speedway in 1949, marking the beginning of a 23-season career that spanned 421 starts. He proved a consistent and formidable competitor, particularly on short tracks where the majority of his wins occurred, while also securing notable triumphs on larger ovals, such as his dominant 1967 World 600 performance leading 335 of 400 laps. Paschal drove for multiple owners throughout his career, enjoying significant success with Petty Enterprises from 1962 to 1964, and maintained a strong showing in the late 1960s and early 1970s with a high winning percentage in the events he entered. Paschal finished in the top 10 in more than half of his starts and was nominated for the NASCAR Hall of Fame in 2020 in recognition of his contributions to the sport. He passed away on July 5, 2004.

Early life

Youth

Jim Paschal was born on December 5, 1926, in High Point, North Carolina. High Point is located in Guilford County, where he resided during his youth.

Racing career

Entry into NASCAR and early years (1949–1959)

Jim Paschal entered NASCAR by competing in the inaugural Strictly Stock race on June 19, 1949, at Charlotte Speedway, marking his participation in the first event of what became the NASCAR Cup Series. This historic 200-lap dirt oval race at the 0.75-mile track represented the beginning of organized stock car racing under NASCAR sanctioning, and Paschal was among the field of competitors. He continued racing in the series, which transitioned to the Grand National Division in 1950, but typically participated in partial schedules rather than committing to full seasons throughout his 23-year career spanning 421 starts. In the early 1950s, Paschal ran limited events annually, recording finishes such as 15th in points in 1951 with 16 starts and 18th in 1952 with 15 starts, while steadily gaining experience on short tracks and dirt surfaces common to the era. Paschal earned his first Grand National victory in 1953 and added another in 1954, before achieving a career-high three wins in 1955. His most successful year in the 1950s came in 1956, when he finished fifth in the points standings with one win and consistent results across 42 starts. He added another victory in 1958, building a foundation of experience and occasional strong performances during this formative period that supported his later achievements.

Peak performance and major wins (1960–1969)

Jim Paschal reached the height of his NASCAR Grand National Series career during the 1960s, a period marked by his most prominent victories and dominant performances. He claimed two wins in the prestigious World 600 (now the Coca-Cola 600) at Charlotte Motor Speedway, triumphing in 1964 and 1967. These superspeedway victories stood out as his only triumphs on larger tracks, underscoring his particular strength on shorter circuits. Paschal's 1967 World 600 win showcased exceptional dominance, as he led 335 of the race's 400 laps—a record that remained unbroken until Martin Truex Jr. led 392 laps in 2016. This commanding performance highlighted his ability to control high-profile events during his peak years. His overall career total of 25 wins included 23 on short tracks, reflecting his consistent excellence on the ovals where most NASCAR races occurred at the time. Paschal secured victories across multiple seasons in the 1960s, bolstered by strong short-track results that included competitive average finishes around 11th place. These accomplishments in NASCAR's premier series built toward his later success in the Grand American division.

Later years and retirement (1970–1972)

In the later stages of his racing career, Jim Paschal competed primarily in the NASCAR Grand American series, a division for pony cars. The years 1969–1972 represented the most productive period of his career, during which he won 16 of the 73 races he entered for a 22 percent winning percentage. Paschal drove AMC Javelins in many of these Grand American events, securing victories such as the 1970 Paul Revere 250 at Daytona International Speedway and the Casey 200 at the North Carolina State Fairgrounds. His last win in the premier NASCAR Grand National Series came earlier, in 1967 at Montgomery Motor Speedway. Paschal's final start occurred in the 1972 Coca-Cola 600, where he finished 16th. He retired from driving after the 1972 season. Following retirement, he transitioned to business ownership in trucking while also farming cattle and poultry.

Achievements and records

Legacy and honors

Jim Paschal is remembered as a pioneering figure in NASCAR's early history, having competed in the inaugural Strictly Stock race in 1949 and sustaining a competitive career across more than two decades in the sport's formative era. His versatility on both dirt and paved surfaces, combined with exceptional reliability, cemented his reputation among the series' foundational drivers. Paschal received formal recognition for his contributions with inductions into the National Motor Sports Press Association Hall of Fame and the Stock Car Racing Hall of Fame, both in 1977. His remarkable consistency stands out in his finishing in the top 10 in 230 of his 421 Cup Series starts, more than 50 percent of his races. Despite 25 Cup Series victories and a strong record of achievement, Paschal has not been inducted into the NASCAR Hall of Fame, holding the distinction of the most wins among eligible drivers not enshrined there. This ongoing omission underscores his status as one of the sport's most accomplished yet underrecognized figures from its pioneering years.
