Joe Sweet is an American former professional football wide receiver known for his role as a special teams standout with the Los Angeles Rams in the early 1970s.[1] A walk-on at Tennessee State University, he was selected by the Rams in the 17th round (435th overall) of the 1971 NFL Draft but did not play during the 1971 season due to injury. He went on to play four seasons in the league with the Los Angeles Rams (1972–1973), New England Patriots (1974), and San Diego Chargers (1975).[2][1] Sweet overcame an early injury setback (a bruised kidney in 1971) to become a reliable contributor on special teams starting in 1972, where he was noted for his speed, preparation, and ability to separate from defenders, earning praise from coaches and teammates for his work ethic and potential.[1]
After his playing career, Sweet transitioned to careers in real estate and mortgages before retiring east of Los Angeles.[1] He and his wife Storme co-founded the Aliah Sweet Fragile Hearts Foundation with their daughter Ariel, dedicated to supporting siblings of children with disabilities through leadership and development programs, established in memory of their son Aliah who passed away at age nine after a long-term illness.[1] Sweet has reflected fondly on his time with the Rams, crediting the organization's legacy and the veteran players who mentored him for shaping his professional experience.[1]
