Kate Long (born 1964) is an English author. She is best known for the number one bestselling novel The Bad Mother's Handbook.[1] She lives in Whitchurch in Shropshire.

Biography

Kate Long was born in 1964 and raised in Blackrod, a village between Wigan and Bolton,[1] and was educated at Bolton School. At 18 she left home to study English at Bristol University, where she graduated with a First Class Honours degree, then trained as a teacher in Exmouth for a year. For over a decade, she taught at Abbey Gate College, a secondary school just outside Chester.

Her first novel, The Bad Mother's Handbook was published by Picador[2] in 2004, was serialized on BBC Radio Four's Book at Bedtime and nominated for a British Book Award. The film rights were bought by Ruby Films and ITV produced the TV version in February 2007 which starred Catherine Tate. Since then she has written eight other novels: Swallowing Grandma,[2] Queen Mum, The Daughter Game, Mothers and Daughters (first published as 'A Mother's Guide to Cheating'), Before She Was Mine, Bad Mothers United which is the sequel to The Bad Mother's Handbook, and Something Only We Know.[3]

As well as novels, Long has written for BBC Wildlife Magazine, collaborated with Hugh Warwick, Melissa Harrison and Carolyn Jess-Cooke on their collections of non-fiction essays, and had short stories published in Woman's Own, Woman & Home, the Sunday Express magazine and the Sunday Night Book Club anthology.[citation needed]

Her latest book, Boost Creative Writing Confidence at KS2, is a guide on how to teach creative writing to children. She blogs weekly about how to engage children with exciting, accessible poetry and stories.

Screenwriting and adaptations

The Bad Mother's Handbook adaptation

Kate Long's debut novel The Bad Mother's Handbook was adapted into a one-off television drama film of the same name for ITV. The adaptation was produced by Ruby Television in association with Ingenious Broadcasting and broadcast on 19 February 2007. It starred Catherine Tate as Karen Cooper, Anne Reid as Nancy Hesketh, Holly Grainger as Charlotte Cooper, and Robert Pattinson as Daniel Gale, with additional roles filled by Steve John Shepherd and Steve Pemberton among others. Kate Long received screenplay credit alongside co-writer Kate O'Riordan. The film was directed by Robin Sheppard. The original novel had achieved number one bestseller status prior to its screen adaptation.

Personal life

Residence and later activities

Kate Long resides in Whitchurch, Shropshire. She has lived in the market town for many years, raising her family and establishing her home there after earlier periods in other parts of England. In her later activities, Long has focused on teaching and mentoring in creative writing. She has developed and launched short courses through North Shropshire College, held in Oswestry and Shrewsbury, which welcome writers of all levels and cover topics such as character generation, story structuring, dialogue, description, beginnings and endings, and pathways to publication. She maintains resources on her website for creative writing with children, featuring classroom-tested exercises in poetry, narrative, playscripts, and descriptive writing, and blogs about the writing club she runs at schoolwritingclub.blogspot.com, where she shares weekly lesson plans.
