Upbringing in Sacramento
Keith Powers was born on August 22, 1992, in Sacramento, California. He is the oldest of four siblings and grew up in the South Sacramento neighborhood, which he has described as a close-knit, family-oriented community where everyone knew each other. Powers has reflected on his early years as humble and grounded, crediting the city's environment for keeping him connected to his roots throughout his life.[13][14][15][16] Raised in an athletic family, Powers' childhood revolved around sports and simple pleasures like watching cartoons, with little time for other activities such as camping or skiing due to the emphasis on physical pursuits. His family encouraged his involvement in various sports, including football (where he played as a wide receiver and safety), basketball, baseball, and track and field, fostering discipline and coordination from a young age. These experiences at local schools and fields in Sacramento helped build his foundational interests in performance and teamwork.[15][14][17][18] Powers' father was a pivotal influence in his upbringing, offering unwavering support and guidance to steer him away from negative paths like street life toward positive opportunities. The family also introduced him to entertainment through their shared love of music, particularly New Edition, which his parents enjoyed and used to impart life lessons during challenging times. This supportive home environment in Sacramento provided a stable foundation that encouraged Powers' early passions before his later pursuits.[19][17][4]Modeling discovery and high school years
At the age of nine, Powers' mother submitted his photos to a modeling agency in San Francisco, leading to his signing with JE Model Management and subsequent casting in several print advertisements.[14][15] During his teenage years, Powers balanced his burgeoning modeling opportunities with a strong focus on athletics at Sheldon High School in Elk Grove, a suburb of Sacramento. He participated in multiple sports, including football as a wide receiver, basketball, baseball, and track and field, excelling enough to attract attention for potential college scholarships, particularly in football.[14][18][4] Around his later high school years, Powers faced a pivotal choice between pursuing athletic scholarships and advancing his modeling career, ultimately deciding to prioritize the latter as recruitment from agencies like JE Model intensified.[20][13] He graduated from Sheldon High School in 2010 without enrolling in college, instead dedicating his efforts to developing his modeling portfolio and transitioning to professional opportunities in Los Angeles.[18][4]Career
Modeling beginnings
Following his high school graduation in 2010, Keith Powers signed with Wilhelmina Models in Los Angeles at the age of 17, transitioning from local modeling gigs in Sacramento to a full-time professional career. This contract with the renowned agency provided him access to high-profile opportunities in the fashion world, building on his earlier discovery through a San Francisco agency during his teenage years.[21][22][13] Powers relocated to Los Angeles shortly after signing, initially staying with his godmother before securing his own apartment in Long Beach, which allowed him to immerse himself in the industry's hubs. His work during this period frequently required travel between Los Angeles and New York for castings, photoshoots, and networking events, fostering relationships with photographers, designers, and other models that shaped his early trajectory. By 2014, he had expanded internationally, walking the runway for Calvin Klein Collection's Fall/Winter 2014 menswear show during Milan Fashion Week, a milestone that highlighted his growing presence on global stages.[14][23][24] From 2010 to 2014, Powers secured several notable modeling assignments, including editorial features in GQ magazine and commercial campaigns for brands such as Guess and Skechers. These projects, along with print advertisements for retailers like Target and Sears, established him as a versatile talent in both editorial and commercial spheres, emphasizing his athletic build and charismatic appeal. His efforts during this foundational phase laid the groundwork for broader industry recognition, despite the competitive landscape for emerging models.[20][25]Acting debut and breakthrough
Powers transitioned from modeling to acting in the early 2010s, using his established presence in the fashion industry to secure initial auditions. His professional acting debut came in 2013 with a guest appearance as Stringer Guy on the ABC Family series Pretty Little Liars, marking his first on-screen role in a major television production.[13] That same year, he landed the lead role of Quentin in the straight-to-DVD comedy House Party: Tonight's the Night, a Warner Bros. production that filmed in South Africa and solidified his commitment to pursuing acting full-time after the experience.[13][26] Building momentum, Powers took on recurring and guest roles in 2014 and 2015, including a multi-episode arc as Theo—an undercover police officer posing as a student—on MTV's Faking It starting in season 2.[27] He also appeared as Calvin in a guest spot on AMC's Fear the Walking Dead and starred as LaDarius Pope, a rookie basketball player, in the Yahoo! Screen sitcom Sin City Saints, a short-lived series that aired its eight episodes in 2015.[13] These television opportunities provided crucial experience in ensemble dynamics and helped hone his skills amid the competitive landscape of early career gigs.[28] Powers' breakthrough arrived with his casting as Tyree, Dr. Dre's younger brother, in the 2015 biographical drama Straight Outta Compton. He auditioned for the role over the course of two years, initially submitting tapes before securing in-person callbacks, drawn to the project due to his lifelong fandom of N.W.A.'s music.[29][28] For preparation, Powers immersed himself in research by reading books and watching documentaries on N.W.A., while consulting with Dre's family members to capture Tyree's protective nature toward his brother and mother; he also drew personal inspiration from his cousin's connection to the Rodney King case to inform the character's emotional depth.[30] On set, Powers bonded closely with co-stars including O'Shea Jackson Jr. (Ice Cube), Corey Hawkins (Dr. Dre), and Jason Mitchell (Eazy-E), forming a tight-knit group that socialized off-hours through activities like playing dominoes and watching fights, fostering an authentic familial atmosphere under director F. Gary Gray; Dr. Dre, as a producer, visited nearly daily, adding intensity to the production.[29][30] The film received widespread critical acclaim upon its August 2015 release, earning an 89% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes for its energetic portrayal of N.W.A.'s rise and cultural impact, and was named the top film of the year by the African American Film Critics Association.[31][32] Powers' performance as Tyree contributed to the ensemble's praise, with the movie grossing over $201 million worldwide against a $50 million budget, amplifying his visibility in Hollywood.[31] Post-release, the role generated significant media attention, including fan enthusiasm and interview opportunities that highlighted his breakout potential, leading to heightened interest from agencies and casting directors eager to book him for larger projects.[29][28]Major film and television roles
Following his breakout performance as Tyree in the 2015 biopic Straight Outta Compton, Keith Powers expanded his acting portfolio with roles that showcased his ability to portray complex characters in both biographical dramas and genre films. Powers portrayed Ronnie DeVoe in the 2017 BET miniseries The New Edition Story, a three-part biographical drama chronicling the rise, internal conflicts, and enduring legacy of the R&B group New Edition from their Boston origins to solo pursuits.[17] In the role, he depicted DeVoe as the smooth dancer and last member to join the group, capturing the musician's family ties—such as his aunt Brooke Payne's role as manager—and his contributions to hits like "Candy Girl" and "Cool It Now," with the production praised for its authentic portrayal of the group's dynamics and era-specific details.[33] The miniseries earned widespread acclaim for its biographical fidelity, drawing over 8 million viewers across its airing and high praise from critics for the ensemble's performances in recreating pivotal moments like the group's Motown signing and Bell Biv DeVoe spinoff.[34][35] In the Freeform teen drama series Famous in Love (2017–2018), Powers took on the recurring role of Jordan Wilder, a charismatic Hollywood heartthrob entangled in a love triangle amid the high-stakes world of fame and celebrity romance.[36] The show, centered on an aspiring actress navigating stardom, highlighted Powers' chemistry with leads Bella Thorne and Carter Jenkins, particularly in scenes exploring jealousy, on-set rivalries, and the blurred lines between real and scripted relationships, contributing to the series' appeal as a soapy exploration of young adult ambitions in Tinseltown.[37] Powers demonstrated his romantic and dramatic versatility in films from 2016 and 2017. In 2016, he played Logan, the loyal best friend offering comic relief and insight into modern dating pitfalls, in the romantic comedy The Perfect Match, where he supported the lead's journey through commitment issues amid a wager against monogamy.[38] That same year, he appeared as Patrick in the supernatural thriller Before I Fall, portraying the popular boyfriend in a time-loop narrative about high school bullying and redemption, adding emotional depth to the ensemble's examination of teenage conformity and regret.[39] In 2017, he starred as Cameron Drake, a popular student, in the Netflix teen comedy #realityhigh, which satirized social media influence and high school hierarchies.[40] Powers continued his ascent with supporting roles in major productions, including Major Greenwood, a future soldier in the elite Romeo Command unit fighting an alien invasion, in the 2021 sci-fi action film The Tomorrow War, which faced significant production challenges from COVID-19-related shutdowns, delaying its release from December 2020 to a July 2021 streaming premiere on Amazon Prime Video after theaters closed nationwide.[41][42] He later starred as Eric, the ambitious young intern sparking an age-gap romance with his boss, in the 2023 Netflix romantic comedy The Perfect Find, adapted from a novel about workplace forbidden love and personal reinvention.[8] In 2024, Powers played David, the rebellious leader of a resistance group in a dystopian society obsessed with beauty standards, in the Netflix adaptation of Uglies, emphasizing themes of conformity and self-acceptance in a visually striking YA thriller.[38] That year, he also starred as Lionel "Nasty Nel" Eldridge, a former NBA player and law student, in the MGM+ legal thriller series Emperor of Ocean Park, based on Stephen L. Carter's novel, exploring family secrets and conspiracy.[43] Powers starred as Ugly, the sidekick aiding a burlesque performer in investigating disappearances tied to a comic-book creator's dark secrets, in the 2023 neo-noir thriller Door Mouse, directed by Avan Jogia and blending mystery with social commentary on exploitation in the entertainment industry.[9] He also had a recurring role as Ian, a tech entrepreneur entangled in moral dilemmas, in the 2018 Netflix thriller anthology series What/If.[3]Personal life
Relationship with Ryan Destiny
Keith Powers and Ryan Destiny first met in 2015 at a Teen Vogue party, where their initial interaction sparked a friendship that gradually evolved into a romantic relationship around 2018.[44][45] The couple kept their early romance private, focusing on building a strong foundation amid their rising careers in entertainment.[46] They publicly confirmed their relationship in 2019 during a joint interview with WeTheUrban, marking a shift toward more visible partnership while still valuing discretion.[44][47] This confirmation led to joint appearances at high-profile events, such as attending the 55th NAACP Image Awards in 2024 together as a supportive duo.[48] However, in early 2022, Powers and Destiny announced a breakup after nearly four years together, citing demanding schedules as the primary factor, though they emphasized remaining close friends.[44][49] Following the split, the pair rekindled their romance in 2023, with sources noting their enduring bond as "best friends" who prioritize mutual understanding and family-like connection.[46] This reconciliation highlighted their shared values of privacy in personal matters, even as they occasionally shared glimpses of their life together on social media.[50] They demonstrated ongoing career support by attending each other's professional milestones.[44] Their dynamic reached a new milestone on October 5, 2025, when they announced their engagement via a romantic Instagram photoshoot, affirming their commitment after a decade of connection.[51][45]Privacy and public persona
Keith Powers maintains a deliberate approach to privacy, particularly concerning family matters and non-romantic aspects of his personal life, often steering clear of oversharing on social media platforms. In various interviews, he has emphasized the difficulties of navigating public scrutiny while protecting intimate details, stating that individuals in the spotlight should focus on growth and respect rather than exposing every facet of their lives.[52][53] His public persona in Hollywood is characterized as low-key and supportive, with Powers frequently appearing gracious and approachable at events. On red carpets, he advocates treating others with kindness and authenticity, advising aspiring figures to "drink a lot of water, treat everyone with respect and kindness," which underscores his grounded demeanor amid industry pressures.[52] This image extends to fan interactions, where he prioritizes genuine connections over performative celebrity. As part of this supportive nature, Powers has publicly championed his partner Ryan Destiny's endeavors, reflecting a broader ethos of upliftment in his personal circle.[52] Powers has sustained a commitment to wellness into adulthood, notably achieving and celebrating sobriety milestones, such as 300 days without alcohol as of October 2025, as a means of managing anxiety and fostering mental clarity.[54][55] In terms of advocacy, Powers has been vocal about the need for greater diversity and equitable representation in modeling and acting, particularly for Black performers. Following his breakout role in Straight Outta Compton, he highlighted how such projects can inspire youth by showcasing multifaceted Black experiences, challenging stereotypes through roles that emphasize vulnerability and leadership.[20] In a 2017 interview, he articulated the broader struggle, noting, "as an African-American, we just want the same opportunities as Caucasian actors or any type of other actors. We don't want to play the same stereotypical roles."[56] By 2023, Powers further advocated for narratives centered on Black joy, arguing that Hollywood requires more positive, authentic depictions to reflect lived realities.[19][21]Filmography
