Ken Phillips is an American publicist known for creating and directing national publicity campaigns for prominent recording artists and entertainment figures. [1] His work has supported the careers of acts including Red Hot Chili Peppers, Joan Jett, Goo Goo Dolls, Pentatonix, Van Halen, and Joni Mitchell, as well as comedians such as Margaret Cho. [2]
Phillips began his career in the music industry after transitioning from a role as a hospital dietician, initially working in the office of songwriter Diane Warren before joining the publicity department at Warner Bros. Records. [1] There, he served as a key assistant in PR and handled campaigns for major artists during the 1990s, including early work with Red Hot Chili Peppers and Joan Jett. [1] He founded Ken Phillips Publicity Group, Inc. in May 1997 after five years at the label, building an independent practice focused on strategic media placement and artist development. [1] [2]
Over more than two decades, Phillips has adapted publicity strategies to industry shifts, including the rise of digital platforms, social media, and virtual performances, while emphasizing the importance of strong artist teams, consistent messaging, and realistic expectations for media outcomes. [1] His efforts have helped emerging acts like Pentatonix transition from online origins to Grammy recognition and supported established artists in maintaining visibility across traditional and new media channels. [1] He is based in Los Angeles and continues to represent a range of music and entertainment clients. [2]
