Laurens, Iowa

Laurens is a city in Pocahontas County, Iowa, United States. Its population was 1,264 at the 2020 census.

Laurens was platted in 1881. It was named in honor of Henry and John Laurens, father and son, two French Huguenots who became residents of Charleston, South Carolina, and were loyal to the Colonies during the Revolution.

Laurens is located at 42°50′50″N 94°50′58″W / 42.84722°N 94.84944°W / 42.84722; -94.84944 (42.847105, -94.849542).

According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 0.73 square miles (1.89 km2), all land.

As of the 2020 census, there were 1,264 people, 577 households, and 346 families residing in the city. The population density was 1,670.0 inhabitants per square mile (644.8/km2). There were 691 housing units at an average density of 913.0 per square mile (352.5/km2), of which 16.5% were vacant. The homeowner vacancy rate was 2.6% and the rental vacancy rate was 21.8%.

0.0% of residents lived in urban areas, while 100.0% lived in rural areas.

Of the 577 households, 25.8% had children under the age of 18 living with them; 43.8% were married-couple households; 9.9% were cohabitating couples; 23.1% had a female householder with no spouse or partner present; and 23.2% had a male householder with no spouse or partner present. 40.0% of all households were non-families. 32.9% of all households were made up of individuals, and 14.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years old or older.

The median age in the city was 43.8 years. 22.8% of residents were under the age of 18, and 22.3% were 65 years of age or older. 24.4% of residents were under the age of 20; 3.6% were between the ages of 20 and 24; 24.1% were from 25 to 44; and 25.6% were from 45 to 64. For every 100 females there were 101.0 males, and for every 100 females age 18 and over there were 101.7 males age 18 and over.
