Upbringing and family background

Marcel Somerville was born on 7 January 1986 in , . Public information regarding Somerville's immediate family is limited, with few details available about his parents' occupations or any siblings; his mother, Corleta Somerville, was reported to be 61 years old in 2017. He grew up in a working-class environment within London's multicultural urban landscape, particularly in the area of north-east London. Somerville spent his childhood in , a suburban district known for its diverse community and proximity to the city's vibrant cultural scene, which contributed to the early social connections that later influenced his path into music during adolescence.

Initial musical influences

During his teenage years in , north-east , Marcel Somerville was exposed to the burgeoning and hip-hop scenes of the early , drawing inspiration from local acts like and American rap influences such as and . Growing up, he first encountered music through old-school cassette players, with 's "Ice Ice Baby" (1990) becoming one of his earliest favorites due to its infectious beats and sample, which he still appreciates for its production quality. This exposure was amplified by music channels like The Box, where videos such as 's "" from the album (1997)—his first purchase with pocket money at Woolworths—captivated him and introduced hip-hop's rhythmic flow and storytelling. A pivotal influence came from the UK garage movement, particularly So Solid Crew's "Oh No (Sentimental Things)" (2000), which Somerville credits with igniting his desire to become an MC. Around age 14 or 15, he began downloading tracks and freestyling over them informally with school friends, honing his skills amid the local party scene where garage and MCing were prevalent. These sessions often involved rival school crews merging creative energies, fostering his early adoption of stage names like Rocky B during amateur . While his family supported his creative interests from childhood, it was this immersion in London's urban music culture that bridged his personal passions toward a professional path.

Music career

Time with Blazin' Squad

Blazin' Squad was formed in 2001 by ten school friends from , north-east , blending pop, R&B, and rap elements in their music. Marcel Somerville, performing under the stage name Rocky B, joined the group as a rapper at the age of 15. The lineup included Kenzie, Freek, Melo-D, Spike-E, Flava, Strider, Krazy, Reepa, and Tommy-B, with the collective quickly gaining attention through local performances before signing with . The group's breakthrough came in 2002 with their debut single "Crossroads," a cover of the Bone Thugs-n-Harmony track, which debuted at No. 1 on the UK Singles Chart and spent 19 weeks in the Top 75. This success propelled their debut album In the Beginning to No. 33 on the UK Albums Chart, where it achieved gold certification for sales exceeding 100,000 copies. Somerville contributed raps to several tracks, including "Here 4 One" (No. 6, 2003), and participated in the group's synchronized choreography for live performances and music videos, enhancing their high-energy stage presence. Follow-up singles like "Flip Reverse" (No. 2) and "Love on the Line" (No. 6) further solidified their popularity, leading to a sold-out 11-date arena tour across venues such as the NEC and Manchester Evening News Arena. The second album, Now or Never, released in November 2003, peaked at No. 37 on the amid diminishing commercial momentum. Singles from the record, including "We Just Be Dreamin'" (No. 3) and "Reminisce/Where the Story Ends" (No. 8), maintained some chart presence but failed to replicate earlier peaks. Internal dynamics and label pressures contributed to a hiatus in 2005, following Kenzie's appearance on , with the group officially disbanding in 2006 after losing their record deal. Somerville and several original members reunited in 2017, spurred by his Love Island appearance, performing hits at a one-off London gig at KOKO on November 26, including "Crossroads" and "Flip Reverse." The group continued sporadic activity, with 2019 performances at events like the Kisstory on the Common Festival, reviving interest in their early 2000s catalog. In 2025, Blazin' Squad announced plans for further reunions to mark their 25th anniversary, including performances at events such as the TN90s Festival in and Delapré Abbey in , along with a new single titled "Dim The Lights."

Involvement with other groups

Following the breakup of Blazin' Squad in 2005, Marcel Somerville did not join or form any other musical groups during the mid-2000s, instead transitioning to solo rap and production work while appearing on reality television shows such as CelebAir and The Games. No records indicate involvement in urban music collaborations under a group banner at that time, with his efforts shifting toward individual projects amid the evolving UK music landscape favoring solo artists over ensembles. Brief reunions with Blazin' Squad occurred in 2006 and 2009, but these were limited to the original lineup rather than new group formations. Around 2009-2010, Somerville explored production and DJing without documented group activities, as industry trends toward digital solo releases contributed to the challenges of sustaining group projects.

Solo endeavors and production work

Following the disbandment of Blazin' Squad in 2005, Marcel Somerville transitioned into production, drawing on his experience from group collaborations to develop a more autonomous creative style. In 2015, he founded Dmode Music Limited, a London-based and focused on artist development, beat production, and industry connections for emerging talent. The company, which Somerville directs, emphasizes nurturing new musicians through guidance on sound refinement and access to radio, marketing, and management resources. This was followed by "They Wanna Know" in December 2018, a track that highlighted his and production talents, distributed via platforms like GRM Daily. In 2019, he issued "Sober," another self-produced effort that further established his presence in the UK hip-hop and R&B scenes. These releases demonstrated Somerville's evolution toward multifaceted production, where he handled beats and vocal arrangements to support his personal artistic voice. A significant setback occurred in February 2018 when thieves broke into Somerville's car in , stealing his laptop containing months of unreleased demos and production work, which delayed planned releases by several weeks. This incident forced a temporary pivot, leading Somerville to expand into live DJing as a way to maintain visibility and income while rebuilding his catalog. By the late , he began performing DJ sets at events, blending his production beats with nostalgic noughties tracks to engage audiences. Post-2020, Somerville has continued his production work through Dmode, focusing on beat creation and artist support amid personal life changes, though specific new releases have been limited. He has sustained his DJ career with regular performances at UK venues, including a headline set at The Sugarhouse in Lancaster in November 2024, where he curated "Naughty Noughties" experiences tying into his established brand. This ongoing role underscores his entrepreneurial approach, prioritizing live engagements and behind-the-scenes development over frequent solo drops.
