Martin Brambach (born 28 October 1967) is a German actor. He grew up in Dresden, East Berlin and Hamburg.[1] After attending Westfälische Schauspielschule drama school in Bochum, Brambach was engaged at Schauspielhaus Bochum, Schauspiel Köln, Burgtheater Vienna (company member from 1989 to 1999) and Schaubühne Berlin.[2]

He appeared in more than one hundred films since 1988. He played minor roles in the Academy Award-winning films The Lives of Others, The Counterfeiters and The Reader, and worked with internationally known directors like Michael Haneke and Thomas Vinterberg.

Brambach lives in Recklinghausen with actress Christine Sommer, her daughters and their son.[3][4] He is the step brother of Jan Josef Liefers.[5]

Martin Brambach was born on 28 October 1967 in Dresden, German Democratic Republic. He is the son of costume designer Heidi Brambach, originally from Breslau, and architect Jürgen Schöne. His early childhood was spent in Dresden-Coschütz, where he experienced a very happy upbringing. At the age of six, he moved with his family to Berlin-Prenzlauer Berg. There, he was raised by his mother Heidi Brambach and director Karlheinz Liefers, whom he believed to be his biological father until the age of twelve. At twelve, he learned through family revelations that his biological father is Jürgen Schöne and that he has a stepbrother, actor Jan Josef Liefers, the son of Karlheinz Liefers. During his youth in Berlin, Brambach developed an interest in acting and began participating at age 15 with Jugendtheater 76 in Berlin-Weißensee.

Relocation to West Germany and acting training

In 1984, Brambach followed his mother from East Berlin to West Germany, where they settled in Hamburg. In Hamburg, Brambach attended Gymnasium but left without obtaining the Abitur. Starting in 1985, he began his formal acting training at the Westfälische Schauspielschule Bochum.

From 2004 to 2006, he portrayed Kriminaloberkommissar Winfried "Winnie" Scheel in 36 episodes of the police procedural SOKO Wismar. Since 2006, he has played Kriminalhauptkommissar Arne Brauner in the crime series Unter anderen Umständen, appearing in 22 episodes. Between 2007 and 2010, Brambach starred as Thomas Behrens in the series KDD – Kriminaldauerdienst. He continued his presence in television with the role of Dr. Metzler in the comedy-drama Add a Friend from 2012 to 2014, featuring in 18 episodes. Since 2016, Brambach has been a regular on the long-running anthology crime series Tatort, portraying Kriminalhauptkommissar Peter Michael Schnabel as part of the MDR investigative team in numerous episodes.
