Background

Early life

William Matthew Cavenaugh was born on May 31, 1978, in Jonesboro, Arkansas. As the second-oldest of seven children, Cavenaugh was raised in Jonesboro, where his large family provided a supportive environment during his formative years. His early interest in performing arts emerged prominently at age 11, when he made his film debut as a child actor in the 1989 comedy Little Monsters, portraying one of the little monsters. Education

Cavenaugh attended Ithaca College, where he earned a Bachelor of Fine Arts (B.F.A.) in musical theater in 2001. Mentors in the program encouraged a creative, artist-driven approach rather than formulaic methods, fostering individuality to avoid producing "acting robots." This training helped refine Cavenaugh's tenor voice by integrating singing as a natural extension of speech, contributing to a naturalistic acting style that shed his Southern accent and enhanced his expressive range on stage. His education at Ithaca bridged his early interest in performing—evident from a childhood debut—with pathways to professional opportunities, equipping him with the skills and confidence for immediate post-graduation pursuits in theater circles.
