Mela Loot Liya
"Mela Loot Liya" (Urdu: میلہ لوٹ لیا, lit. 'Stole the show') is a 2020 song written and produced by Ali Zafar and released under his Lightingale Records label. It was created in response to public criticism of "Tayyar Hain", the official anthem of the fifth season of the Pakistan Super League (PSL), and incorporates a compilation of fan-submitted videos. The music video was released on 1 March 2020 on YouTube and the song accumulated over four million views within two days of release.
When "Tayyar Hain", the official anthem of the fifth season of the Pakistan Super League, was released in early 2020, it attracted widespread criticism from fans. Ali Zafar's name began trending on Twitter in Pakistan as supporters recalled his anthems for the first three editions of the PSL, particularly "Ab Khel Jamay Ga" from the second edition. Reports suggested that there had been resistance to engaging Zafar for PSL-related work, attributed in part to the ongoing legal proceedings in Ali Zafar vs. Meesha Shafi. In response to fan interest, Zafar posted on social media expressing support for the PSL brand and Pakistani artists.
Following the PSL opening ceremony, Ali Azmat stated in an interview with Waseem Badami on ARY News that bloggers had been hired to campaign against the official anthem, though he did not name Zafar directly. Badami subsequently conducted a Twitter poll in which fans indicated a preference for a Zafar anthem. On 23 February 2020, Zafar announced that he was preparing a new anthem and invited fans to record and share dance videos for inclusion in the production, launching the hashtag #BhaeeHazirHai. Azmat, along with Asim Azhar and Haroon, singers of "Tayyar Hain", subsequently expressed public support for Zafar's project.
A petition was filed at a civil court in Lahore requesting that the Pakistan Cricket Board and Pakistan Electronic Media Regulatory Authority be directed to restrain Zafar from releasing the song, on the grounds that it would damage the ratings and popularity of the PSL. The petition was subsequently withdrawn.
The song's poster was revealed on 29 February 2020. The anthem was released on 1 March 2020 on YouTube by Lightingale Records, and Zafar also premiered it on Waseem Badami's television programme. According to The News International, production took under a week at a budget of less than Rs. 200,000, with no external sponsorship. Filming took place at the National College of Arts, Superior University Lahore, and a learning hub operated by the Ali Zafar Foundation in the Walled City of Lahore, and incorporated fan-submitted videos from around the world.
The song accumulated over four million views within two days of its release on YouTube. Its digital viewership was reported to have surpassed that of "Tayyar Hain" shortly after release. Madiha Shakeel of Business Recorder described it as a "fun-filled, energetic song" that fulfilled its advance publicity. A review in The News International noted that "the lyrics are a little displaced" but that "the beat is catchy", and observed that Zafar made no reference to the PSL or cricket in the song.
In 2021, Zafar performed the song with Alizeh Shah at the Hum Style Awards.
