Family background
Michael Garza was born on February 1, 2000, in Plano, Texas, U.S.[4][6] Garza is of Mexican and remote French ancestry.[7] He has an older sister, Jessica Garza, who is also an actress.[7] This familial connection to the entertainment industry contributed to the household's engagement with acting, as both siblings pursued careers in the field from a young age.[8] Garza's professional years active began in 2009, reflecting early family encouragement in his artistic endeavors.[5]Upbringing in Texas
Michael Garza was born on February 1, 2000, in Plano, Texas, a suburb of Dallas where he experienced a typical American childhood amid the sprawling North Texas landscape. His family environment emphasized close familial bonds, with his upbringing rooted in the cultural blend of his Mexican and French ancestry, which influenced his early sense of identity.[4][7] From a young age, Garza shared a playful and creative dynamic with his older sister, Jessica Garza, who would later pursue acting as well. The siblings frequently staged elaborate home performances, complete with costumes, music, props, and makeshift sets, turning their household into a stage for imaginative storytelling. These activities not only fostered sibling camaraderie but also sparked Garza's initial fascination with performance and narrative expression.[9] Garza's Texas childhood provided a grounded, community-oriented backdrop that shaped his formative years, though specific details about his schooling remain scarce in public records. This suburban stability, coupled with familial encouragement through his sister's emerging interests, laid the groundwork for his personal development, leading to explorations in acting by around age 14.[9]Career
Early roles (2014–2018)
Garza's feature film debut came at age 14 in the 2014 film The Hunger Games: Mockingjay – Part 1, where he portrayed Eddy, a minor rebel fighter supporting the resistance efforts in the dystopian storyline.[5] In 2016, Garza secured his first major television role as the series regular Frank Armstrong in the second season of the Fox mystery thriller Wayward Pines, appearing in seven episodes as a young resident navigating the town's enigmatic secrets.[10] This part represented a pivotal early achievement, allowing him to demonstrate dramatic range in a high-profile ensemble cast amid the series' suspenseful narrative.[11] Garza continued building experience with guest appearances in 2018, including the role of Mark in an episode of NBC's time-travel drama Timeless and as Teen in an installment of TBS's comedy series Angie Tribeca, showcasing his versatility across genres.[5] These supporting roles, while not leads, collectively strengthened his professional profile by contributing to diverse ensemble dynamics and highlighting his adaptability during a formative period marked by persistent audition efforts despite rejections.[12]Breakthrough and later career (2019–present)
Garza's breakthrough arrived in 2019 with his first starring role as Ramón Morales, the resilient leader of a group of friends confronting supernatural horrors, in the film Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark, produced by Guillermo del Toro and directed by André Øvredal.[13] The performance earned him critical recognition for his emotional depth and ability to anchor the ensemble in the horror genre, marking a shift from supporting parts to leads.[14] In an interview, Garza credited his persistence, noting he auditioned twice for the role after an initial rejection, emphasizing how such determination helped him secure the part.[12] Following this milestone, Garza continued building his television presence with guest appearances that showcased his versatility in dramatic and procedural formats. He portrayed Milo Garner, a young man entangled in a crisis, in a 2020 episode of 9-1-1.[15] In 2022–2024, he recurred as Silas, a sharp-witted assistant in the comedy series Hacks, appearing in three episodes and contributing to the show's exploration of entertainment industry dynamics.[16] Garza also guest-starred as Camilo Diaz in a 2023 episode of Quantum Leap, playing a character navigating time-travel dilemmas, and as Reymundo De Leon in two episodes of NCIS during 2023–2024, depicting a complex informant role.[1] Expanding into independent cinema, Garza took on the role of Juan, a key ally in a tale of redemption and survival, in the 2023 drama DogMan, directed by Luc Besson, which highlighted his range beyond mainstream horror.[17] By 2025, his career momentum carried into new projects, including a part in the mystery podcast series The Big Fix: A Jack Bergin Mystery, the recurring role of Julio Carlos in the television series Pulse, and a guest appearance as Art Cervantes in an episode of Chicago P.D..[5] Despite the absence of major awards, Garza has cultivated a growing reputation for reliable performances in ensemble casts and genre-driven stories, often drawing on his experiences with post-rejection resilience to discuss the challenges of breaking through in Hollywood.[12]Filmography
