Family background
Momal Sheikh hails from a prominent family within the Pakistani entertainment industry, providing her with significant early exposure to show business. Her father, Javed Sheikh, is a veteran actor, producer, and director known for his extensive work in Lollywood, Bollywood, and Pakistani television, including roles in films like Om Shanti Om. Born on October 8, 1954, in Rawalpindi, Punjab, Pakistan, Javed Sheikh's Punjabi roots trace back to this region, influencing the family's cultural heritage.[6][2] Her mother, Zinat Mangi (also spelled Zeenat Mangi), is a former supporting actress in Pakistani television and film during the 1970s and 1980s, contributing to the household's deep ties to the arts. She shares a close sibling bond with her brother, Shahzad Sheikh, a prominent actor recognized for roles in popular Pakistani dramas and films, and sister Mariam Sheikh, a model.[7][8][1] The family's connections extend further through her paternal uncles, actors Saleem Sheikh and Behroze Sabzwari, the latter connected via marriage to Javed Sheikh's sister, Safeena Sheikh, making him Momal's phuppa (paternal uncle). Her cousin, Shehroz Sabzwari (son of Behroze Sabzwari), is also an established actor and model in Pakistani media. This extensive network of relatives in acting and production, all based primarily in Karachi where Momal grew up, offered her immersive early exposure to the industry's dynamics, sets, and professional circles from a young age.[2][9]Upbringing in Karachi
Momal Sheikh was born on April 6, 1986, in Karachi, Pakistan.[10][11][12] She spent her formative years in Karachi, growing up in a middle-class urban household amid the vibrant cultural landscape of the city. Her childhood was marked by financial hardships and emotional challenges following her parents' divorce, during which her mother raised her and her brother single-handedly without paternal support. These difficulties included instances of struggling to afford basic needs, such as school fees, leading to moments like being asked to stand outside the classroom.[13][14] Despite these obstacles, Momal received early exposure to the arts through her family's longstanding prominence in the Pakistani entertainment industry, including visits to film sets and participation in family gatherings centered around media discussions. This informal immersion in show business, combined with Karachi's rich local culture of theater and performing arts, fostered her initial interest in creative expression, though she did not pursue acting professionally until later in life.[15] She attended Karachi Grammar School for her education, where the urban environment of Karachi shaped her independent personality through outdoor activities and community interactions.[1]Personal life
Marriage
Momal Sheikh married Nadir Nawaz in 2010 during a traditional Pakistani wedding ceremony that included events such as mayoon, mehndi, baraat, and valima.[16][17] The event, held in Karachi, was attended by close family members and select celebrities from the entertainment industry, including Meera, Laila, Nadeem Baig, and Anwar Maqsood.[17][18] Nadir Nawaz, a professional outside the entertainment sector, has provided Momal with personal stability amid her demanding career, actively supporting her pursuits in acting and production.[19] The couple maintains a low-profile personal life, with Momal occasionally sharing family moments during media appearances and interviews, emphasizing their strong partnership and mutual encouragement.[19][20]Children
Momal Sheikh and her husband welcomed their first child, a son named Ibrahim, in May 2015.[21][22] Their second child, a daughter named Alyeha Nawaz, was born on August 20, 2020.[23][24] As a parent in the public eye, Sheikh has navigated the demands of her acting and production career alongside motherhood, with her professional breakthroughs in Bollywood occurring soon after Ibrahim's birth, supported by her family.[25] She frequently shares glimpses of family life through social media posts about milestones like her children's birthdays, while raising them in Karachi, where the family is based.[21][24][12]Career
Modeling and television debut
Momal Sheikh began her career in the entertainment industry as a model in the early 2000s, appearing in print advertisements and walking the ramp at fashion shows in Pakistan.[26][27] She transitioned to acting around 2008, debuting on television in the comedy-drama serial Yeh Zindagi Hai on Geo Entertainment, where she played the supporting role of Jalebi.[28] Her breakthrough came with the lead role of Hamna in the family drama Mirat Ul Uroos (2012–2013) on Geo TV, which garnered critical acclaim and marked her rise as a prominent television actress.[29] Other notable roles include Mein Tum Aur Woh, Zara Aur Mehrunnisa, Mushq, and Dil-e-Momin (2021).[1] Born into a well-established showbusiness family—her father, Javed Sheikh, is a veteran actor, and her brother Shehzad Sheikh is also an actor—Momal benefited from these connections to facilitate her entry, though she pursued opportunities through auditions like other newcomers.[30] In her initial years, she concentrated on dramatic roles within family-oriented serials, building a reputation for portraying relatable characters in Pakistani television dramas.[15]Film roles and Bollywood entry
Momal Sheikh transitioned from television to cinema with her Bollywood debut in the 2016 romantic comedy Happy Bhaag Jayegi, directed by Mudassar Aziz.[31] In the film, she portrayed Zoya, the strong-willed fiancée of Abhay Deol's character Bilal Ahmed, the son of an ex-local governor, who navigates comedic cross-border mishaps alongside co-stars Diana Penty, Jimmy Shergill, and Ali Fazal.[32] Sheikh prepared extensively for the role through rehearsals focused on comic timing, particularly with Deol, highlighting her character's decisive nature in steering the plot's chaotic events.[32] The film received mixed reviews overall, with some critics noting its light-hearted take on Indo-Pak camaraderie but critiquing uneven writing, though Sheikh's performance contributed to the comedic elements.[33] Sheikh described her Bollywood entry as a significant milestone, stating in a 2016 interview that working in the Indian film industry is regarded as a "huge achievement" back in Pakistan, reflecting the cultural prestige associated with such cross-border opportunities.[34] However, the release faced challenges, including a delay in Pakistan due to issues with the censor board amid geopolitical tensions in 2016,[35] which underscored the volatile dynamics for Pakistani artists in Bollywood. Her television success, including popular serials like Yeh Zindagi Hai and Mirat-ul-Uroos, served as a stepping stone to these film prospects.[36] Following her debut, Sheikh took on limited roles in Pakistani cinema, prioritizing selective projects that aligned with her established cross-border appeal. Her film output remained sparse amid industry shifts, including ongoing restrictions on Indo-Pak collaborations, leading her to focus more on television. By 2025, films had become secondary to her TV career, with no major film releases since 2016.[3]Production ventures
Momal Sheikh entered film production as a co-producer on the 2018 Pakistani revenge thriller Wajood, collaborating with her brother Shehzad Sheikh under the family banner Javed Sheikh Films. Directed by their father Javed Sheikh, the film stars Danish Taimoor as a pilot who falls in love with a woman betrothed to another man, leading to themes of pursuit, conflict, and retribution.[37][38] The project marked her behind-the-scenes debut, which she described as a unique experience that allowed her to contribute to Pakistani cinema while balancing her acting career.[29] Sheikh's approach to production emphasizes selective involvement, prioritizing projects that align with her vision for relatable and dedicated storytelling, though her output has been limited primarily to this single venture. Her commitments as an actress and family responsibilities, including time as a stay-at-home mother, have constrained further productions, with no solo efforts undertaken to date.[29][39] As of November 2025, no additional production announcements have been made.[3] Through her role in Wajood, Sheikh has helped sustain and promote the family-run Javed Sheikh Films, contributing to its efforts in delivering content for local audiences amid a evolving industry landscape.[29] This collaboration underscores her support for familial creative endeavors without venturing into independent production.[37]Filmography
