Nafata of Gobir
Nafata was Sarkin Gobir (King of Gobir) from about 1797 to 1798. He is chiefly remembered for imposing restrictions on the activities of the Islamic scholar and reformer Usman dan Fodio, measures that contributed to the growing political and religious tensions which eventually culminated in the Fulani War and the establishment of the Sokoto Caliphate.
Nafata succeeded Bawa Jan Gwarzo as ruler of Gobir during a period of increasing influence of the reform movement led by Usman dan Fodio. Although Dan Fodio had enjoyed the patronage of earlier Gobir rulers, Nafata became concerned about the growing number of his followers and the movement's expanding political influence.
According to contemporary traditions preserved in the Infāq al-Maysūr and later historical works, Nafata issued a series of regulations restricting preaching, limiting conversions to Islam, and prohibiting the wearing of turbans and veils by all but established Muslim communities. These measures marked a significant deterioration in relations between the Gobir court and Dan Fodio's followers.
Nafata's reign was brief. He was succeeded by Yunfa, under whose rule relations with Dan Fodio deteriorated further, ultimately leading to the outbreak of the Fulani War in 1804.
Historians regard Nafata's policies toward Usman dan Fodio as an important turning point in the history of Hausaland. His restrictions on the reform movement contributed to the political conflict that transformed the region and led to the creation of the Sokoto Caliphate, one of the largest pre-colonial states in Africa.
