Phil Alexander Robertson was born in Vivian, Louisiana, to James Burton Robertson and Merritt Hale Robertson. He grew up in a rural setting, deeply connected to nature.

Robertson's childhood involved hunting, fishing, and outdoor activities. He developed a strong work ethic from a young age, helping his family with various tasks. He also displayed athletic talent.

Phil Robertson excelled in football at North Caddo High School, earning all-state honors. His skills were so impressive that he was offered a football scholarship to Louisiana Tech University.

Robertson attended Louisiana Tech University on a football scholarship, where he played quarterback, even ahead of Terry Bradshaw for a time. However, his passion for hunting and the outdoors eventually outweighed his football aspirations.

Robertson graduated from Louisiana Tech University with a bachelor's degree in physical education and later earned a master's degree in education. He briefly taught school before pursuing his duck call business full-time.
