Plot

[edit]

Sixteen-year-old Fumi Nishioka is a homeless high school girl suffering from amnesia, often spending her nights in a secret unused room of the school. Despite having no memories, she chooses a positive outlook on life and is determined to find her "Prince Charming" in the future. One day however, she is found by Kyutaro Horikita, an unfriendly second-year student with a talent for cleaning, and is drawn into a mysterious door in the room through her classmate and delinquent Sakaguchi's voice calling for help. The door leads to the Void, a gateway linking thousands of people's minds, one of which is Sakaguchi's. Sakaguchi, who has been plagued by negative emotions and created a bug infestation in his mind, is cleansed by Kyutaro, who arrives just in time to save Fumi.

The school's chairman and Kyutaro's brother-in-law, Koichi Kitagawa, recognises Fumi's talent and decides to invite her as part of their family, explaining the situation to her. The Horikita family are "Sweepers", people who enter the mind vaults of others to cleanse their souls of bug infestations that are the result of uncontrollable negative emotions. As Fumi undergoes training to become a Sweeper and Kyutaro's partner, she stumbles upon an extraordinary power lying dormant inside her: the "Queen", a rare existence that can allow the bearer to have mind control over others. However, the Queen's power can be both evil and good, and some people are out to find her and capture her for their own deeds. Struggling with her training and romantic feelings for Kyutaro, Fumi attempts to search for an answer in her own soul and lost memories.

Reception

[edit]

Queen's Quality was nominated for the 67th Shogakukan Manga Award in the shōjo category in 2022.[70][71]

Reviewing the first volume of QQ Sweeper for Anime News Network, Rebecca Silverman gave it a grade of B. She wrote that the while series "doesn't do a whole lot to distinguish itself or give us any major surprises, it is still a very enjoyable read filled with the humor and small romantic elements that Motomi does so well". She noted that "it feels as if Motomi can't quite decide who is the point of view character. While there is no problem in manga with having more than one, the shifts here feel abrupt". She was positive toward the series' art, commenting "Motomi's art is more refined than in Dengeki Daisy while still retaining her sharp look". She concluded by writing that the series "isn't off to an amazing start, but it is a solid one that looks like it will build to Motomi's usual heights".[5]

In her review of the first volume for , Rebecca Silverman assigned an overall grade of B, commending the series' humor as a hallmark of Motomi's work, the refined and sharp artwork featuring varied character designs and effective depictions of creatures, and the intriguing motifs that blend hard work with subtle magic. However, she critiqued the uneven perspective, marked by abrupt shifts between protagonists Kyutaro Horikita and Fumi Nishioka, which occasionally confuse the reader's focus. The ICv2 review of the first volume offered a more mixed assessment, rating it 2 out of 5 stars and highlighting Fumi's unlikeable portrayal due to her shallow obsession with wealth and status, which dominates early character interactions. Despite this, the reviewer acknowledged the strong foundation, centered on Kyutaro's ability to cleanse negative emotions as a "sweeper," establishing a promising setup for the story's darker themes. Fan reception has been favorable, with readers appreciating the manga's blend of romance and fantasy elements. On , the first volume holds an average rating of 4.0 out of 5 based on 2,135 ratings, where users frequently laud the engaging romantic tension and imaginative involving spirit cleansing. Similarly, on , QQ Sweeper scores 7.64 out of 10 from 5,552 users, with positive feedback emphasizing the unique premise of mind-sweeping mechanics and the strong chemistry between the lead characters. Common praises across reviews include the intriguing supernatural world-building, which explores negative emotions as tangible "bugs" that protagonists must eradicate, the balanced integration of romance and action sequences, and Motomi's dynamic artwork infused with humor that lightens the darker tones. Criticisms often center on the series' short length of three volumes, which limits character and plot depth, occasional pacing issues during mind-cleaning scenes that feel repetitive, and an underdeveloped supporting cast that remains in the background. Reviews of later volumes noted improvements, particularly in the explanation of the power system. In her Anime News Network review of the third and final volume, Silverman gave it an A- grade, praising the clearer delineation of how "bugs" infest individuals driven by negative emotions like depression, which enhances the framework and ties into themes of and emotional growth, though she lamented the abrupt ending that transitions directly into the sequel Queen's Quality.

The three-volume series contributed to the broader franchise including its sequel Queen's Quality, with Queen's Quality reaching 3.7 million copies in circulation by February 2025. Digital availability through the app further enhanced sales by providing ongoing access to global readers. The series' brevity constrained its sustained chart dominance, yet its per-volume strength underscored Motomi's appeal in the shōjo genre.
