Ralf Rangnick was born in Backnang, West Germany, to parents Dietrich and Erika Rangnick.
Early Coaching Career
1980s
Rangnick began his coaching career in the 1980s, first as a player-coach at Viktoria Backnang, then at VfB Stuttgart II and TSV Lippoldsweiler. He became the head coach at SC Korb in 1988 and later managed the Under 19 team at VfB Stuttgart.
Reutlingen 05 and Ulm 1846
1995-1997
Rangnick took over as head coach at Reutlingen 05 in 1995 and led the team to a fourth-place finish in his first season. He moved to Ulm 1846 in 1997 and won the Regionalliga Süd in his debut season.
VfB Stuttgart
1999-2001
Rangnick became the first team coach at VfB Stuttgart in 1999, a club where he had previously played and coached at amateur and under-19 levels. He won the UEFA Intertoto Cup in 2000 but was dismissed in 2001 due to poor league performance.
Hannover 96
2001-2004
Rangnick took over 2. Bundesliga side Hannover 96 in 2001 and led the team to promotion to the Bundesliga in his first season. He was dismissed in 2004 following a decline in form.
TSG Hoffenheim and Schalke 04
2006-2011
Rangnick joined TSG Hoffenheim in 2006 and achieved successive promotions to the Bundesliga. He moved to Schalke 04 in 2011 and led the team to the UEFA Champions League semi-finals.
Red Bull Salzburg and RB Leipzig
2012-2020
Rangnick became the director of football for both Red Bull Salzburg and RB Leipzig in 2012. Under his leadership, RB Leipzig saw promotion from the regional league to the Bundesliga and reached the UEFA Champions League.
Lokomotiv Moscow
2021
Rangnick signed a three-year contract as manager of sports and development for Lokomotiv Moscow in July 2021 but left the post in November 2021 to become interim manager of Manchester United.
Austria National Team
2022-Present
Rangnick was appointed manager of the Austria national team in April 2022. He led the team to qualification for UEFA Euro 2024 and extended his contract through to the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
