Gina-Raye Carter (born 1972[1]), known professionally as Rayveness,[2] is an American pornographic and mainstream film actress. She is an inductee of both the AVN Hall of Fame and the XRCO Hall of Fame.

Key Information

Career

[edit]

Rayveness's first appearance in a pornographic film was a homemade tape she made with her then-husband at the age of 18, after seeing an episode of The Sally Jessy Raphael Show about amateur pornography.[3] Rather than becoming a full-time pornographic performer right away, she sold flowers in nightclubs and worked as a waitress and a stripper.[1]

In 2000, she took a break from the adult film business to pursue acting in mainstream films. She dyed her hair red and wore brown contact lenses to minimize the chance of someone recognizing her. She appeared in a speaking role on NYPD Blue and was in Path to War as President Lyndon B. Johnson's eldest daughter, Lynda. She returned to the adult industry in 2003 after the death of John Frankenheimer, who was her primary connection to the mainstream industry.[1]

In July 2009, Rayveness became the first contract star for the all-female studio Girlfriends Films,[1] although the contract allowed her to continue boy-girl work elsewhere.[4] She is a member of the XRCO Hall of Fame[5] and the AVN Hall of Fame.[6] In 2019, she appeared alongside fellow pornographic actresses Lisa Ann and Cory Chase in an episode of the Showtime series Billions titled "Infinite Game".[2]

Personal life

[edit]

A native of Jamestown, North Carolina.[1], Rayveness grew up in the Quaker faith and married a year before she left high school.[3] By 2000, she had divorced and remarried, this time to porn actor Tod Alexander. They divorced in 2003.[7] In 2004, she filed a petition with Congressman Brad Sherman requesting that the age requirement for pornography performers be raised from 18 to 21, saying that "People right out of high school in this country don't seem to have the foresight to make such life-altering decisions."[8]

RayVeness is an American pornographic actress known for her extensive career in the adult film industry, spanning more than three decades, and for her inductions into both the AVN Hall of Fame (2015) and the XRCO Hall of Fame (2011). A native of North Carolina, RayVeness entered the adult industry at age 18 while living in Florida and relocated to Los Angeles in 1994 with her then-husband, fellow performer Red Bone, to pursue opportunities more fully. She became a fan favorite for her distinctive alabaster skin, natural curves, and energetic performances, starring in over 300 adult films and gaining particular prominence in the MILF and interracial genres. Her notable titles include My Friend's Hot Mom 12, Dirty Rotten Motherfuckers, and My Mom Craves Black Cock. She has also taken breaks from hardcore performing, including a period focused on mainstream acting credits such as appearances in NYPD Blue (2001) and Path to War (2002), before returning to adult work.

Early life

Childhood and family background

RayVeness was born Karen M. Swaim on June 19, 1972, in Jamestown, North Carolina. She was raised in the Quaker faith in her native North Carolina. She held various early jobs to support herself, including selling Avon products, babysitting, and working in fast-food restaurants.

Early marriage and entry into adult entertainment

RayVeness married one year before leaving high school. At age 18 in 1990, she and her then-husband created a homemade sex tape and sent it to a production company. Her husband performed under the stage name Red Bone. She performed her first sex scene on her 18th birthday for Homegrown Video. She initially limited her performances to scenes with Red Bone and female performers only. The couple's homemade tape marked her entry into amateur adult video releases through outlets such as Homegrown Video. RayVeness divorced Red Bone in 1997, after which she expanded her work to include scenes with other male performers. This transition led into her subsequent professional career in the adult industry.

Career

Early career (1990–2000)

RayVeness entered the adult entertainment industry in the early 1990s following a homemade adult recording she made at age 18 with her then-husband, inspired by an episode of The Sally Jessy Raphael Show discussing amateur pornography. Rather than immediately pursuing a full-time career in adult films, she supported herself through various nightclub jobs, including working as a flower seller, waitress, and stripper. Her professional debut occurred in 1992 with a facial scene in Amorous Amateurs 2, marking the start of her credited work in the industry. Early performances often featured her as a brunette, and she appeared in a range of genres including boy-girl, lesbian, and occasional fetish material for studios such as Vivid, VCA, Elegant Angel, and Private. Activity remained limited in the initial years but increased significantly from the mid-1990s onward, with dozens of titles released annually through the late 1990s. Following her 1997 divorce, RayVeness became more prolific, building a substantial body of work across major producers and establishing herself as a recognizable performer by the end of the decade. In 2000 she paused her adult film career to pursue opportunities in mainstream acting.

Mainstream acting break (2000–2003)

In 2000, RayVeness took a hiatus from the adult film industry to pursue opportunities in mainstream acting. To minimize the risk of being recognized from her previous work, she dyed her hair red and wore brown contact lenses for auditions. She secured a speaking role in the 2001 episode "In the Still of the Night" of the police drama series NYPD Blue, credited as Gina-Raye Swensson in the role of Misty. Her most significant mainstream achievement during this period was portraying Lynda Bird Johnson, the eldest daughter of President Lyndon B. Johnson, in the 2002 HBO television film Path to War, directed by John Frankenheimer. She had several speaking lines in the production and worked on the film for 45 days. Following the death of Frankenheimer in 2002, who had served as her main connection to mainstream opportunities, she returned to the adult film industry in 2003.

Return to adult industry and later career (2003–present)

RayVeness returned to the adult film industry in 2003 following a three-year hiatus from hardcore performances during her pursuit of mainstream acting opportunities. Her comeback featured scenes in Dripping Wet Sex 7 from Simon Wolf Productions, including threesomes with male performers and a notable squirting performance, as well as additional group scenes. She explained the return as motivated by financial needs to fund an expensive college program in music and a newfound personal maturity that allowed her to approach her sexuality on her own terms, selecting partners and projects based on chemistry and personal preference rather than financial pressure alone. She took a hiatus from June 2006 to August 2007 to undergo in vitro fertilization and give birth to her first son in February 2007. Returning to the industry thereafter, she earned recognition in the emerging MILF category, receiving an XRCO Award nomination for MILF of the Year in 2006. In July 2009, RayVeness signed as the first-ever contract star for Girlfriends Films, an all-girl studio specializing in lesbian erotica. The contract required her to perform girl/girl scenes exclusively for the company while permitting her to continue boy/girl scenes with other producers. She had already appeared regularly in Girlfriends Films titles for about a year and a half prior to the agreement. RayVeness highlighted the studio's emphasis on acting quality, creative freedom, and respect for performers, noting that working with their scripted characters made acting enjoyable for her for the first time. In February 2011, she announced her retirement from the adult industry on her Twitter account. She made limited video appearances around 2016. In October 2021, RayVeness returned to performing, signing with Nexxxt Level Talent and stating her goal of becoming a top MILF performer. She has since maintained activity in the industry with MILF-oriented scenes, including releases with studios such as Brazzers and SmutFactor in 2022, solidifying her reputation in the MILF genre during her later career.

Mainstream appearances

Television and film roles

RayVeness has occasionally ventured into mainstream television and film, securing minor roles during breaks from her primary work in adult entertainment. Around 2000, she appeared in a speaking role on the ABC police drama series NYPD Blue. In 2002, she played Lynda Bird Johnson, the eldest daughter of President Lyndon B. Johnson, in the HBO television film Path to War. These roles came during a period when she briefly stepped away from adult films. In 2019, she made a cameo appearance in the Showtime series Billions, in the Season 4 episode "Infinite Game," alongside fellow adult film actresses Lisa Ann and Cory Chase. The cameo involved portraying figures in a scene persuading a character depicted as an adult film enthusiast.

Personal life

Marriages and relationships

RayVeness was married for the first time around 1989–1990, shortly before completing high school, to a man known as Red Bone. The couple divorced in 1997. During her temporary retirement from the adult industry between 2006 and 2007, RayVeness had a child via in vitro fertilization. Her first marriage is notably linked to the homemade sex tape that contributed to her entry into the adult entertainment industry, as covered in the early career section. There is no verified information on subsequent marriages or current relationship status.

Family and advocacy

In April 2004, RayVeness submitted a petition to U.S. Congressman Brad Sherman requesting legislation to raise the minimum age requirement for performers in the adult entertainment industry from 18 to 21. She stated that "People right out of high school in this country don't seem to have the foresight to make such life-altering decisions," emphasizing concerns over young adults' ability to fully comprehend the long-term implications of entering the field immediately after graduation. The effort did not result in any legislative action or change to existing age regulations.

Awards and recognition

Hall of fame inductions

RayVeness was inducted into the XRCO Hall of Fame as part of the Class of 2011, an honor recognizing her contributions to the adult entertainment industry by the X-Rated Critics Organization. She received further recognition with her induction into the AVN Hall of Fame, Video Branch, as a member of the Class of 2015. The official announcement highlighted her career longevity, noting that despite brief breaks to pursue mainstream work and start a family, she had appeared in more than 450 titles since entering the industry in 1990 and was approaching her 25th year in adult entertainment at the time. These hall of fame inductions serve as capstones to her enduring presence in the field.

Nominations and other honors

RayVeness received multiple nominations from the AVN Awards and XRCO Awards, primarily recognizing her performances in the MILF genre and other categories. In 2009, she was nominated for the AVN Award for Best All-Girl Couples Sex Scene for her work in Women Seeking Women 44. She earned an AVN nomination for MILF/Cougar Performer of the Year in 2010. That same year, the XRCO recognized her with nominations for Unsung Siren and MILF of the Year. In 2011, RayVeness secured two AVN nominations: Best Supporting Actress for her role in Couples Camp and MILF/Cougar Performer of the Year. She also received an XRCO nomination for MILF of the Year that year. These nominations reflect her standing in the adult industry during her return to performing.
