Ridgeback (brand)
Ridgeback is a British bicycle brand manufacturing hybrid bikes, children’s bikes, touring bikes and electric bikes. The bikes are distributed by Sportline UK which is owned by H Young Holdings. Sportline UK also owns the Genesis and Saracen bicycle brands.
Ridgeback’s story began in 1983, when founder Errol Drew was the man behind the UK’s first mass-produced, commercially available mountain bikes. Drew first saw a mountain bike at the 1982 New York Bike Show and believing it to be the future of cycling, decided to launch his own brand under the name Ridgeback. By 1983 the bike had been designed, manufactured and assembled and were soon being sold through the Freewheel catalogue. The range quickly expanded and it’s thought that by the mid-1980s half the mountain bikes in the UK were Ridgebacks.
In 1990, Ridgeback introduced its first model with a 700c wheel size, called the Roxy. An early forerunner to today’s current range of Ridgeback Hybrid bikes, it was the benchmark by which all other commuter bikes were measured.
1998 saw another trend setter in the shape of the Storm model. Storm was a slick-tyred mountain bike designed for street usage providing a fun-to-ride alternative to more traditionally styled commuters.
In 2001, Ridgeback introduced The Genesis Day One model. Inspired by Ridgeback’s own product testing, along with Shimano’s launch of a road groupset that was compatible with flat handlebars. The Day One model became so popular that the Genesis became a brand in its own right in 2006.
In 2003 Ridgeback launched its first range of children’s bikes. Since then the Ridgeback brand has become a household name in this market and offers everything from balance bikes for toddlers to lightweight commuter bikes for older children.
In 2008, Ridgeback launched a model called the R25 to celebrate its 25th anniversary. Only 100 units were made and it was one of the first flat bar road bikes to use Shimano hydraulic disc brakes.
2015 saw the launch of Ridgeback’s first electric bike. Using Shimano’s STEPS system, the Electron model was the first foray into bikes using pedal assistance. Since then, Ridgeback has added a multitude of electric bikes that cover everything from city commuting to cargo carrying.
