Romy Mars is an American actress, singer, and songwriter known for her acting roles in films directed by her family members and her emerging music career marked by confessional pop songs and a prominent social media presence. Born Romy Madison Croquet on November 28, 2006, in Paris and raised in Manhattan, she is the daughter of filmmaker Sofia Coppola and musician Thomas Mars of the band Phoenix. As a member of the extended Coppola family, she has pursued creative work in both acting and music from a young age. Mars began her acting career with a voice role as Young Laura in her mother's film On the Rocks (2020), followed by a part as Girl Reporter in her grandfather Francis Ford Coppola's Megalopolis (2024), and recurring appearances as Kayla in the television series English Teacher. She has also composed and performed in her own music video for the single A-Lister (2025). In her music, released starting in 2024, she blends sugary pop with introspective lyrics influenced by Amy Winehouse, addressing themes of personal struggle, sobriety, and the pressures of fame and online culture. She first gained widespread public attention in 2023 through viral TikTok videos that showcased her candid, self-deprecating humor about her privileged upbringing, quickly establishing her as a distinctive online personality who embraces rather than shies from discussions of her background. This visibility has contributed to her growing audience across platforms and positioned her as an emerging figure in both entertainment and digital culture.

Early life

Family background

Romy Mars, born on November 28, 2006, in Paris, is the daughter of filmmaker Sofia Coppola and musician Thomas Mars, the frontman of the band Phoenix. Her full legal name is Romy Madison Croquet. Her parents, who met while working on Coppola's film The Virgin Suicides, married in 2011. Mars has a younger sister, Cosima, born on May 18, 2010. She is a member of the prominent Coppola family, serving as the granddaughter of director Francis Ford Coppola and niece of filmmaker Roman Coppola, for whom her first name serves as an homage. She was raised partly in Paris before the family relocated to New York City in 2010. Her parents have emphasized maintaining privacy for their children during their early years.

Upbringing and education

Romy Mars was raised largely out of the public eye, in line with her mother Sofia Coppola's stated preference for providing her children with a normal childhood free from the pressures of celebrity exposure. In a 2017 interview, Coppola explained her approach, saying, “I don’t want them ever to be jaded. I never saw the point of taking little kids to movie premieres and stuff. I just want them to have a childhood.” This philosophy emphasized privacy and non-professional development during her early years. The family relocated from Paris to New York City in 2010, the year her younger sister Cosima was born, establishing their primary residence in the city thereafter. As of fall 2025, Mars attends Lehigh University as a freshman.

Acting career

Romy Mars began her acting career with small, family-connected roles in films directed by her mother and grandfather. Her debut came in On the Rocks (2020), a comedy-drama directed by her mother Sofia Coppola, where she provided the voice for the character Young Laura in an uncredited capacity, billed as Romy Croquet. She later appeared in Megalopolis (2024), directed by her grandfather Francis Ford Coppola, playing a small part as a girl reporter. The film had its world premiere at the 2024 Cannes Film Festival. These early appearances, both tied to family-directed projects, served as her initial entry points into acting.

Television and recent film work

Romy Mars made her television debut with a guest role in the FX comedy series English Teacher in 2024. She portrayed Kayla, a high school student in the class of the show's protagonist Evan Marquez. Her appearance was featured prominently in the first-season episode "Kayla Syndrome," which aired on September 9, 2024, and centered on her character's self-diagnosed condition and efforts to gain sympathy and popularity among peers, including a storyline at the homecoming dance. This marked her first acting credit outside of family-related film projects, highlighting her entry into independent television work. No additional television or non-family film roles have been documented as of the latest available information.

Music career

Beginnings and musical influences

Romy Mars began writing music at the age of 12. She drew significant influence from her father, Thomas Mars, the frontman of the French indie pop band Phoenix, whose musical career shaped her early interest in songwriting. For several years, Mars kept her compositions private, with no public releases during this formative period. She has been active in music since 2020, though she did not transition to professional status until 2024, when her first songs became publicly available, marking a deliberate shift from personal creation to public artistry. This development in music occurred parallel to her early acting appearances in family projects around the same time but remained a distinct pursuit.

Debut releases and videos

Romy Mars made her musical debut on May 22, 2024, with the release of two singles, "Stuck Up" and "From a Distance," which were collectively issued as a two-song project also titled Stuck Up. The bedroom pop tracks were written by Mars and produced by singer-songwriter Claud, who also co-wrote "From a Distance." The songs explore confessional themes of a summer romance gone awry, with no accompanying music videos released at the time. In 2025, Mars continued her music output with the single "A-Lister," released on May 9, 2025, and accompanied by an official music video directed by her mother Sofia Coppola. She followed with the single "Ego," released on August 8, 2025, presented as official audio without a music video. These standalone singles built on her initial debut style, though no chart performance or major awards have been reported for her releases to date.

Personal life

Public exposure and social media

Romy Mars has generally maintained a limited public profile, consistent with her parents' efforts to shield her from media attention during her childhood. This approach began to shift in her teenage years with occasional appearances and social media activity. Her first modeling engagement came in 2020 when, at age 13, she became the face of Marc Jacobs' new diffusion line Heaven, appearing in a series of portraits for the campaign. In March 2023, Mars posted a now-deleted TikTok video that gained widespread attention, in which she filmed herself making vodka sauce pasta while explaining that she was grounded after attempting to use her father's credit card to charter a helicopter from New York to Maryland for dinner with a camp friend. In the clip, she noted her parents' strict rule against public social media accounts, stating that they did not want her to be perceived as a "nepotism kid," though she added that "TikTok is not gonna make me famous, so it doesn’t really matter." The video's candid humor and revelations about her family dynamics contributed to its viral spread across platforms. Her social media presence has since grown more active and visible, particularly in 2025. In September 2025, she shared a TikTok performing the "Biggest Brat" dance trend alongside actor Jacob Elordi, whom she first met on the set of her mother's film Priscilla in 2022; the clip amassed nearly 19 million views and drew significant online commentary. That same year, as a freshman at Lehigh University, she began posting regularly about dorm life, classes, and everyday experiences, with content that blended her background with relatable college moments and drew comparisons to the viral "Bama Rush" TikTok trend of documenting sorority recruitment and campus transitions. These posts reflect her evolving and more open engagement with the public, though it remains selective compared to many peers in the public eye.
