Twin siblings Max and Spencer Ernst grew up in Silver Spring, Maryland, and showed an interest in music from a very young age. In middle school, they and some friends formed a rock band called Upslide. Upslide performed locally in the Washington metropolitan area for several years, which eventually led the twins to attract the attention of a New York-based management company, Magus Entertainment, who secured them a publishing deal with Cherry Lane Music. While attending Gonzaga College High School, they formed a pop duo called Trust Fall and began touring other parts of the country.[3] Max and Spencer met Chelsea Lee in 2007 while they were performing at the 9:30 Club, a club in Washington D.C.

Around 2009, Chelsea signed as a solo artist with Atlantic Records.[4] The same year, Max announced his homosexuality to his brother.[5] In 2010, Chelsea and Spencer both began a romantic relationship.

Following high school, the Ernst twins deferred attending college in hopes of getting a record deal with Epic Records. The deal ultimately fell through, and they both went to the University of Maryland, College Park in the spring. While attending college, the twins formed a folk rock duo called The Walking Sticks. The Walking Sticks released their debut EP World So Bright on June 27, 2012, when the twins were in their senior year of college.[3] The songs on the album were all recorded live, and featured an acoustic roots rock sound.

Having ended her solo contract with Atlantic Records in 2011, Lee joined The Walking Sticks sometime after World So Bright was released.[6] In late 2013, The Walking Sticks released their second EP, Send the Night. With this release, the group completely changed their music style, transitioning from folk rock to dream-pop.[7]

In March 2016, The Walking Sticks changed their name to Shaed, in recognition of their new stylistic leanings.[8] They signed with Photo Finish Records by June 2016, and toured with Marian Hill and Vérité in the fall of 2016. In September 2016, Shaed released Just Wanna See, their debut EP under their new name.[9] Their single "Name On It" was the featured track for a Victoria's Secret commercial which debuted on May 15, 2018.[10] In April 2017, Shaed went on tour again as an opener for Bishop Briggs.[9]

In September 2017, the band moved into a house together, and began recording in a home studio for their second EP, Melt. On May 18, 2018, Shaed debuted their first single from the EP, "Trampoline".[11] The group released Melt on September 21, 2018, via Photo Finish Records. On October 30, 2018, Apple debuted their MacBook Air commercial featuring "Trampoline".[12] Chelsea Lee and Spencer Ernst were married in Arlington, Virginia during the first weekend of October 2018.[4]

Their new single "No Other Way" was released on October 16, 2020, via Photo Finish Records.[13]

Chelsea and Spencer welcomed daughter June River on January 29, 2022, according to the band's Instagram page.

SHAED is an American trio based in , consisting of Chelsea Lee, her husband Spencer Ernst on bass and production, and his twin brother on drums and production. Formed in 2011 when the members met as teenagers in the D.C. area, the band—stylized as SHAED and pronounced "shade"—began collaborating on music in home studios, blending organic instrumentation with electronic elements to create an emotive sound exploring themes of love, family, and connection. The group rose to prominence in 2018 with their breakout single "Trampoline," which amassed over 585 million streams on Spotify in its collaboration version with ZAYN and featured in an Apple MacBook Air commercial, earning recognition from iHeartRadio and Billboard. Their discography includes the debut EP Melt (2018), the debut studio album High Dive (2021), and the second studio album Spinning Out (2024, via BMG), the latter inspired by the birth of Lee and Spencer's first daughter in 2022 and recorded entirely at home. As a self-described "family band," SHAED has navigated label transitions to greater independence, with personal milestones as of 2024—including the birth of their first child in 2022 and the expectation of a second—shaping their evolving music and live performances.

History

Formation and early career (2011–2015)

Twin brothers Max and Spencer Ernst, raised in Silver Spring, Maryland, began making music together during their childhood in the Washington, D.C. area. In middle school, they formed a rock band called Upslide with friends, performing at local events such as Catholic school circuits and community parades. By high school, the brothers had transitioned to a pop duo named Trust Fall, signing with New York-based management and focusing on material aimed at securing a label deal. While attending the , the Ernst brothers formed the folk-rock duo The Walking Sticks around 2011, drawing inspiration from their upbringing near wooded areas and their father's collection of walking sticks. As seniors, they self-released their debut EP, World So Bright, on June 27, 2012, featuring acoustic-driven songs that reflected their rootsy Americana influences. The EP was produced independently , showcasing their multi-instrumental talents on guitars, , and keyboards without major label support. Vocalist Chelsea Lee, who had been signed to as a solo artist since her teens, met Spencer Ernst at a show in 2007 and began dating him in 2009; after her contract ended in 2011, she joined The Walking Sticks as a guest vocalist and soon became a full member. Her addition brought a more dynamic vocal presence to the group, leading to the release of their second self-produced EP, Send the Night, in late 2013, which marked an initial shift toward dreamier, synth-infused elements while retaining folk-rock foundations. In 2014, they followed with the EP Pop Dreams, further experimenting with pop structures in tracks like "Bang (Vibe with You)." During this period, The Walking Sticks performed extensively in the D.C. area at venues such as Nyumburu Amphitheater and Looney’s Pub, building a local following through independent gigs and home-recorded material. By 2015, their sound had begun evolving more distinctly toward dream-pop, setting the stage for future changes.

Breakthrough and "Trampoline" (2016–2019)

In March 2016, the band changed its name from The Walking Sticks to Shaed, stylized as SHAED and pronounced "shade", to better align with their shifting sound incorporating more dream-pop influences. This rebranding marked a deliberate pivot from their earlier folk-rock roots toward ethereal, electronic-tinged . The trio's first release under the new moniker was the EP Just Wanna See, issued in September 2016 via Photo Finish Records, which introduced their emerging dream-pop style through tracks blending hazy vocals and atmospheric production. In 2016, Shaed signed with Photo Finish Records, paving the way for broader exposure. This deal led to the September 21, 2018, release of their second EP, Melt, which debuted at number 132 on the US Billboard 200 and showcased polished electropop arrangements. The EP's lead single, "Trampoline", arrived on May 18, 2018, and gained traction through viral sharing on social media platforms before exploding in popularity following its feature in an Apple MacBook Air commercial that October. "" became Shaed's hit, peaking at number 13 on the and number 1 on the chart, where it held the top spot for multiple weeks and charted for a record 63 weeks. The track earned 4× Platinum certification from the RIAA for over four million units sold in the , driven by its infectious, buoyant and Chelsea Lee's soaring vocals. Amid the song's ascent, band members Chelsea Lee and Spencer Ernst married in October 2018, strengthening their personal and creative bonds within the group. The breakthrough fueled extensive touring, including a standout performance at Lollapalooza in August 2019, and garnered coverage in major outlets like Rolling Stone, which highlighted the band's rising indie-pop presence.

Later years and recent releases (2020–present)

In 2020, Shaed released the single "No Other Way," a track produced by the band alongside GRAMMY-winning collaborators Drew Brown and James Musshorn, serving as the for their debut full-length . The song's introspective lyrics explored personal resilience amid uncertainty, setting the tone for the band's evolving sound. This release came during the early months of the , which profoundly disrupted Shaed's touring schedule and creative ; the band, consisting of Chelsea Lee, Spencer , and , relocated temporarily—Lee and Spencer to her parents' home—altering their collaborative dynamics and prompting a reevaluation of ongoing projects. While specific virtual performances were limited, the pandemic forced delays in live engagements and production, ultimately leading the group to scrap an initial version of their debut for a more authentic iteration completed in isolation. The band's first studio album, High Dive, arrived on May 14, 2021, via Photo Finish Records, featuring collaborations with artists like ZAYN, Lewis Del Mar, and Two Feet. Recorded amid the pandemic's constraints, the record delved into themes of vulnerability, anxiety, and emotional reevaluation, with tracks like "Six in the Morning" showcasing Lee's nuanced vocals that conveyed raw introspection and mental strain. Critics noted the album's balance of upbeat instrumentation against lyrical turmoil, reflecting the band's personal growth during a period of global isolation. In 2022, personal milestones further shaped their trajectory: Lee and Ernst welcomed their daughter, June, whose arrival influenced subsequent songwriting by introducing motifs of parenthood's joys and challenges, as seen in later compositions. Shaed's second album, Spinning Out, was released on June 7, 2024, through , marking their major-label debut and a shift toward a more organic, home-recorded aesthetic captured live at Max Ernst's residence. Comprising 11 tracks, including singles "" and "Maybe I Don't Know How," the album addressed themes of , love, growth, and mortality, with reviewers praising its matured sound—raw, nostalgic, and cohesive—as a natural evolution from the anxious energy of High Dive. The record's creation was informed by the band's departure from their previous label and management, fostering a sense of independence that emphasized familial bonds both personally and musically. Post-2022, touring remained limited due to family priorities, including the birth of their second child; a modest East Coast release tour occurred in summer 2024, but no major 2025 tours have been announced as of November 2025. The band continues to engage fans through active social media presence on platforms like Instagram, sharing glimpses of studio sessions and personal reflections, while pursuing self-directed creative endeavors.

This style positions Shaed within the broader alternative pop , where pop meets experimental electronic flourishes. The band's sonic evolution reflects a marked transition from their early folk-rock roots, characterized by acoustic guitars and Americana influences, to an electronic-infused pop approach beginning in 2016. Post-transition, their work incorporates layered keyboards, reverb-drenched synths, and programmed beats, moving away from organic toward a more polished, digital palette that enhances the dreamlike of their tracks. Their 2024 album continues this evolution with a return to more organic , such as piano and acoustic guitar, alongside moody synth-pop elements, creating psychedelic and cathartic tones while reflecting a settled, honest sound recorded at home. This shift allowed for greater experimentation in home studio environments, enabling spontaneous integration of electronic production techniques. Central to Shaed's identity are the strong, soulful vocals of lead singer Chelsea Lee, which serve as the emotional core, often conveying a duality of light and dark themes through her versatile delivery—ranging from buoyant highs to vulnerable lows. The Ernst brothers, Max and Spencer, contribute a multi-instrumental production style that blends alternative rock, synth-pop, and ambient elements, resulting in a "psychedelic city pop" vibe marked by infectious rhythms and urban-tinged euphoria. Their collaborative process in a shared home studio fosters this hybrid sound, weaving Lee's voice with buoyant beats and subtle electronic manipulations for a cohesive, head-nodding appeal.
