Rapping career
[edit]Inspired by Eminem's alter ego "Slim Shady", Shehyee pursued battle rapping & rose to fame by joining the culture-defining FlipTop Battle League, that paved way for the emergence of the Philippine mainstream hip-hop movement. He won the Dos Por Dos tournament with Smugglaz defeating Abra and Loonie in 2012, cementing Shehyee's status as a local battle rap household name. As of 2022, the video of their battle in the tournament's finale has garnered more than fifty million views and holds the record for the most watched video in FlipTop's history.[3] He immediately emerged among the "top rappers" in the country later that year.
After the breakout fame, Shehyee released his debut self-titled album named Shehyee on October 11, 2013.[2][4] His debut single, "Trip Lang" was a Myx Top 10 chart hit as well as reaching the top ten in other local charts in the Philippines. It was a hit locally, reaching 14 million views on YouTube and a million streams on Spotify that year.[5] His second single, "Inspirasyon", which is about a journey of a hopeless romantic guy was praised by an author as a "quality song".[6] There have been several mall tours with the same name promoting the album.[7] Shehyee released another single on September 25, 2014 on YouTube,[8] entitled "Isang Umaga";[8] about a guy worrying about his relationship with his girlfriend (played by Meg Imperial in the music video).[8] Shehyee and Donnalyn Bartolome also collaborated on a track entitled "Huwag Siya" in 2014. In July 2015, he won the first Spotify Emerge in Asia, by topping ten other artists from the continent, including Marion Aunor.[9] The album's best hit "Trip Lang" was nominated as Best Rap Recording at the 27th Awit Awards.
Shehyee announced the release of another album in 2015,[10] but the unveiling of this next album was delayed and no further announcements were heard from Shehyee's management ever since; but it was widely expected to be released in 2017. Shehyee released another single on December 19, 2015 on his label's YouTube channel, entitled "Samalamig". The music video was released three months later and featured Filipino comedian Kuya Jobert and rapper Zaito. On the same year, Shehyee & Donnalyn Bartolome dropped their second collaborative single entitled "Pag Siya" which supposedly was a sequel to their previous collaboration, "Huwag Siya" in 2014 that had twenty million views on YouTube.[11]
On 2017, Shehyee and rapper Sinio became the talk of the town and gained controversy after their rap battle in which Shehyee's girlfriend Ann Mateo was mentioned and dissed multiple times in the battle in an offensive manner.[12][13] Sinio later apologized after Mateo's mom warned to sue him. It became the second most-watched video in the rap battle league's history with 48 million views, trailing the 2012 Dos Por Dos tournament finale, featuring Shehyee also, by two million views. On the same year, Shehyee released the music video for his track "Bituin" & re-announced the release of his upcoming new album.
On 2018, Shehyee participated in the annual prestigious FlipTop's Isabuhay Tournament, where he came out as the champion against 15 other top battle emcees. By his victory, Shehyee made history by being the first battle emcee in the prominent battle rap league to become a champion both as an individual emcee and with a partner in the Dos Por Dos tournament, where he won with Smugglaz in 2012.
On 2021, Shehyee released three singles entitled "2020 Freestyle", "TAG", and "Aba Okay Din". He also re-recorded his 2015 non-album track "Samalamig", after it became a sleeper viral hit via TikTok. On 2022, Shehyee also re-recorded his best hit "Trip Lang" after it went viral again on TikTok after almost seven years, it was released under Viva Records.

Birth and upbringing
Christopher John Rosales Ongkiko, professionally known as Shehyee, was born on February 13, 1992, in Mandaluyong, Philippines.[1][7] He was raised in Mandaluyong alongside his older brother, Renzie Ongkiko, who later became a journalist and media personality associated with TV5.[7] Little is publicly documented about his childhood experiences, though his early exposure to hip-hop culture in the urban environment of Metro Manila influenced his later pursuit of rapping.[7]Education
Shehyee, whose real name is Christopher John Rosales Ongkiko, completed his secondary education at José Rizal University in Mandaluyong, Philippines, graduating as an honor student.[8][7] Following high school, Ongkiko enrolled at San Beda College (now San Beda University) in Manila to pursue a degree in law.[9][8]Career
Battle rap beginnings
Shehyee, born Christopher John Rosales Ongkiko, entered the Philippine underground hip-hop scene in the late 2000s, drawn to battle rap as a platform for lyrical confrontation and personal expression. Prior to his professional debut, he honed his skills in informal cyphers and local freestyle sessions in Mandaluyong, where the raw, acapella format emphasized multis, punchlines, and rebuttals—hallmarks of Filipino rap battles. This grassroots involvement laid the foundation for his aggressive style, characterized by intense delivery and targeted disses, which would define his early career.[3] His formal entry into organized battle rap occurred with the inaugural Ahon event of the FlipTop Battle League on May 15, 2010, at Guerrilla Radio in Pasig City. In this non-tournament match, Shehyee faced DaddyJoe D in one of the event's undercard battles, marking his debut in the league founded just months earlier by Alaric Riam Yuson (Anygma). The Ahon series, meaning "ascent" in Filipino, symbolized the league's push to elevate battle rap from underground gatherings to structured competitions, and Shehyee's performance showcased his potential as an emcee willing to probe opponents' vulnerabilities. This battle, part of FlipTop's third overall event, helped establish the league's reputation as the premier platform for Pinoy hip-hop battles.[10][11][12] Following his debut, Shehyee participated in subsequent FlipTop events and parallel leagues like Sunugan, building momentum through consistent appearances. Notable early bouts included a Sunugan match against Juan Tamad on December 24, 2011, and FlipTop clashes such as versus BLKD on December 4, 2010, which amassed significant views and highlighted his growing notoriety. Despite initial struggles, including more losses than wins in his formative years, these battles refined his technique and fanbase, positioning him as a fierce competitor in a scene dominated by veterans. By 2012, his partnership with Smugglaz led to victory in FlipTop's Dos Por Dos tournament, a tag-team format that solidified his status and transitioned him from novice to champion.[13][3]Recording and songwriting
Shehyee transitioned from battle rap to studio recording with his self-titled debut album, released on October 11, 2013, under Viva Records in collaboration with FlipMusic Records. The project featured 12 tracks, many of which he composed himself, marking his initial foray into structured songwriting beyond freestyle battles. In a 2014 interview, he described the creative process for lead single "Trip Lang" as drawing from casual outings with friends, aiming to capture a lighthearted and upbeat vibe to appeal to a broader audience.[14] The album's production involved collaboration with producers Thyro and Bojam, who helped refine Shehyee's raw rap style into polished hip-hop and pop tracks. Another key song, "Inspirasyon," stemmed from his observations of personal struggles, written to encourage those facing unrequited feelings or setbacks, with lyrics emphasizing perseverance and hope. Shehyee noted that while "Trip Lang" was the first single released, it was not the initial track he recorded, highlighting an iterative approach to sequencing his material.[14] In later years, Shehyee's songwriting evolved to incorporate more introspective themes amid career hiatuses. For his 2022 single "Kuntento," released via Viva Records, inspiration struck during a moment of personal reflection in the bathroom, which he called his "thinking chair." The track's lyrics address motivation and contentment after achieving dreams, with lines like "Yo, pa’no ba sipagin / Bruh, pwede ba ituro n’yo sa akin," reflecting on the challenges of sustained effort. He continued this trajectory with subsequent singles "Opo" (2023), "ALL IN" (2024), and "Aubrey" (2025), further exploring themes of personal growth and resilience. To support his independent creative growth, Shehyee invested in self-education by purchasing books on guitar, piano, and music theory, enabling him to handle more aspects of production himself.[15][6]Acting roles
Shehyee entered the acting scene in 2014 with minor roles in two Filipino films, marking a brief foray into cinema alongside his primary career in music and battle rap. In The Gifted, a comedy revenge-romance directed by Chris Martinez and produced by Viva Films, he appeared as a batchmate in a supporting capacity, contributing to the ensemble surrounding leads Anne Curtis, Cristine Reyes, and Sam Milby. The film, released on September 3, 2014, explores themes of rivalry and romance among high-achieving friends.[16] Later that year, Shehyee took on the role of Piggy Gang in Talk Back and You're Dead, a teen action-romance directed by Andoy Ranay and starring James Reid and Nadine Lustre. As a gang member, his character added to the film's portrayal of underground youth culture and conflict in a blockbuster that grossed significantly at the Philippine box office upon its May 2014 release.[17] These appearances represent Shehyee's known acting credits to date, with no subsequent film or television roles documented in major databases. His involvement in the projects aligned with his rising profile in the local entertainment industry during that period.[18]Discography
Studio albums
Shehyee released his debut studio album, titled Shehyee, on October 11, 2013, through Viva Records.[19] The project marks his transition from battle rap to mainstream recording artistry, featuring 12 tracks that fuse Pinoy hip hop with pop and R&B influences. Recorded between 2012 and 2013 at FlipMusic Records studios, the album was primarily produced by Bojam and Thyro Alfaro, who handled all tracks and incorporated Shehyee's lyrical style rooted in his FlipTop background.[20][19][21] The album opens with the short intro "Welcome" and includes standout singles like "Trip Lang" featuring actress Sam Pinto on the chorus, which highlights Shehyee's storytelling on urban life and relationships, and "Inspirasyon," a motivational track showcasing his compositional skills. Other notable songs include "Maria Clara," addressing modern takes on Filipino identity, and "Balang Araw," a reflective piece on aspirations. Clocking in at 48 minutes and 33 seconds, the release emphasizes Shehyee's versatile flow and collaborations with emerging talents, solidifying his presence in the OPM hip hop scene.[22][23][24] As of November 2025, Shehyee remains his sole full-length studio album, with subsequent output consisting primarily of singles and features rather than additional LPs.[25]Lead singles
