Key Information

Biography

[edit]

Bechard was born and raised in Kapuskasing, Ontario.[1][2] She moved to Toronto at age 18 to pursue modelling.[2]

She played the lead role in the 2009 Canadian crime film Sweet Karma.[3] When Bechard attended the 2010 Toronto Comic Arts Festival, she had her portrait drawn by cartoonist Doug Sneyd, who proceeded to say she should appear in Playboy, where his cartoons were regularly published. Bechard sent some of her pictures to Sneyd, and two weeks later she participated in a test shoot that led her to become the Playmate of the month for November.[4] In 2011, she became romantically involved with Playboy founder Hugh Hefner.[5]

The Wall Street Journal reported in April 2018 that Bechard was having an affair with Republican fundraiser Elliott Broidy. After becoming pregnant by Broidy in late 2017, Bechard had an abortion. Her lawyer, Keith Davidson, negotiated the payment of US$1.6 million as money for silence through Michael Cohen, U.S. President Donald Trump's lawyer at that time, who had negotiated a similar confidentiality agreement between Trump and Stormy Daniels.[6][7] However, after making the first two instalment payments, Broidy publicly announced that he would not make any further payments, claiming that her former lawyer Davidson had caused a breach of the agreement by disclosing the affair to Michael Avenatti, who then hinted at it publicly in a late-night tweet.[8][9][10] On July 6, 2018, Bechard filed a lawsuit against Broidy, Davidson and Michael Avenatti in California over Broidy's refusal to carry through with the agreement. She also claimed that Davidson had not properly represented her in negotiating the agreement, preferring his financial interest over her own.[11][12][13]

Shera Lorraine Marie Bechard (born September 14, 1983) is a Canadian model and actress recognized primarily for her selection as Playboy's Playmate of the Month for November 2010 and her lead role as Karma Balint in the 2009 independent film Sweet Karma. Born and raised in Kapuskasing, Ontario, Bechard relocated to Toronto at age 18 to pursue modeling, later appearing in various publications and events associated with Playboy. Her career intersected with high-profile legal proceedings in 2018, when she filed a lawsuit against Elliott Broidy, a prominent Republican fundraiser, alleging breach of a nondisclosure agreement stemming from their extramarital affair, during which she became pregnant and underwent an abortion; the case drew media attention amid disputes over settlement payments and involvement of attorneys linked to other political scandals.

Early life

Childhood and family background

Shera Bechard was born Shera Lorraine Marie Bechard on September 14, 1983, in Kapuskasing, Ontario, a remote town in northern Canada's Cochrane District. Kapuskasing, situated approximately 800 kilometers north of Toronto amid dense boreal forests and reliant on industries such as forestry and pulp production, exemplifies a working-class community shaped by resource extraction and seasonal employment. The town's demographics underscore its Franco-Ontarian character, with French as the first official language spoken by over 67% of residents in the 2021 census, fostering a cultural milieu rooted in French-Canadian traditions, bilingualism, and community ties to Quebec heritage. Bechard grew up in this insular environment, described in biographical accounts as a small French town where daily life revolved around local mills, schools, and limited urban amenities. Verifiable details on Bechard's immediate family remain sparse in public records, with no documented information on her parents' occupations or siblings, pointing to a private, modest family background that likely emphasized self-reliance amid the town's economic constraints and geographic isolation. This upbringing in a predominantly francophone, blue-collar setting provided limited exposure to broader cultural or entertainment influences, aligning with Kapuskasing's historical role as a hub for European immigrant labor in Ontario's north rather than artistic or media pursuits.

Career

Modeling beginnings

Bechard relocated from Kapuskasing, Ontario, to Toronto in 2001 at the age of 18 to launch her modeling career. In the competitive Toronto fashion scene, she initially focused on building a professional portfolio through local print and photography assignments. Her early work included collaborations with established photographers, such as Marcus Klinko, George Whiteside, Ian Cuttler, and musician Bryan Adams, which provided exposure beyond regional gigs and helped attract attention from broader industry networks. These assignments marked incremental breakthroughs, transitioning her from novice status to bookings with higher-profile talents amid the challenges of securing consistent representation in a saturated market reliant on visual appeal and persistence.

Playboy tenure

Shera Bechard served as Playboy's Playmate of the Month for November 2010, featured in the magazine's pictorial spread. Her centerfold photography was conducted by Stephen Wayda. The November issue, with Arianny Celeste on the cover, included Bechard's appearance across multiple pages dedicated to her as the monthly Playmate. Bechard's selection elevated her profile within Playboy, resulting in an exclusive Playmate video and photo set released on Playboy Plus on October 31, 2010. She participated in the 2011 Playmate of the Year competition, attending the announcement event at the Palms Casino Resort in Las Vegas on May 6, 2011. This tenure marked a peak in her modeling association with the brand, though she did not secure the annual Playmate of the Year title.

Acting pursuits

Bechard's primary acting credit is the lead role of Karma Balint in the 2009 Canadian thriller Sweet Karma, directed by Andrew Chase. In the film, produced between 2008 and 2009 with a release in Canada on March 4, 2011, her character is a shy, mute Russian woman who travels to Toronto to infiltrate the sex trade and avenge her sister's murder by human traffickers. The role required Bechard to perform without dialogue for much of the runtime, relying on physical expression amid action sequences involving revenge and confrontation. The film holds an IMDb user rating of 5.1 out of 10, based on 2,286 votes as of recent data, reflecting modest audience reception. On Rotten Tomatoes, it scores 33% from 44 critic reviews, with consensus highlighting its exploitation elements over narrative depth. Some reviewers praised Bechard's debut effort as surprisingly effective for a model transitioning to acting, conveying vulnerability and determination non-verbally, though others critiqued the production's low-budget constraints and formulaic plotting. Beyond Sweet Karma, Bechard has no additional scripted acting roles in film or television, with subsequent credits limited to appearances as herself in reality programming such as Dog Whisperer with Cesar Millan (2010 episode) and Kendra on Top (2012). This indicates her acting pursuits remained confined to a single lead performance, without evident expansion into further professional endeavors in the field.

Personal relationships

Association with Hugh Hefner

In June 2011, shortly after the cancellation of his planned wedding to Crystal Harris, Playboy founder Hugh Hefner announced via Twitter that he was dating Shera Bechard, who had been named the November 2011 Playmate of the Month. Hefner, then aged 85, described Bechard, a 27-year-old Canadian model, as his "new girlfriend" in the post dated June 27, 2011, framing the relationship as part of his personal life amid recent romantic upheaval. The association was publicly positioned as a brief romantic involvement rather than a long-term commitment, with Hefner simultaneously referencing another girlfriend, Anna Sophia Berglund, indicating his pattern of non-exclusive relationships at the Playboy Mansion. No reports confirm cohabitation or deeper integration into Hefner's household during this period, distinguishing it from his more publicized prior partnerships. Bechard herself affirmed the relationship on social media, tweeting her affection for Hefner shortly after his announcement. This link occurred against a stark demographic contrast—Hefner's advanced age versus Bechard's youth—which drew media attention but was not elaborated upon by the parties involved beyond the initial disclosures. The relationship appears to have concluded by 2012, serving as a transitional phase in Hefner's dating history following the Harris split.

Elliott Broidy affair

Development of the relationship

Shera Bechard met Elliott Broidy at a restaurant in 2013, marking the start of a sporadic extramarital affair that persisted intermittently over several years. Broidy, a married businessman and major Republican donor who later served as deputy finance chairman of the Republican National Committee during Donald Trump's 2016 presidential campaign, acknowledged the consensual nature of the relationship in public statements following its exposure. The affair involved private encounters, with Broidy emphasizing confidentiality due to his and rising political prominence. As Broidy's involvement in high-profile GOP deepened— including hosting events for Trump allies—the demands for discretion intensified, reflecting efforts to shield the relationship from public scrutiny amid his professional obligations. Bechard's subsequent filings, unsealed in 2018, detailed this progression based on their interactions, portraying a dynamic that evolved from casual meetings to one requiring greater secrecy.

Pregnancy and abortion

Bechard discovered her pregnancy in late September 2017, approximately seven weeks after conception during her affair with Broidy, and informed him shortly thereafter. Broidy initially expressed support for her continuing the pregnancy, according to Bechard's later account in court filings. By early December 2017, Bechard terminated the via on December 6, at around 12 weeks , amid her allegations that Broidy had urged her to do so despite her initial desire to keep the child, citing fear of his reaction. Bechard described feeling confused and scared upon learning of the , though no independent medical records detailing physical complications from the procedure have been publicly disclosed. These events formed the basis of Bechard's subsequent claims of pressure, but no criminal charges were filed against Broidy related to or the decision, and the matter remained a civil dispute centered on their relationship dynamics rather than verified criminal conduct.

In late 2017, following Shera Bechard's abortion, she entered into a nondisclosure agreement with Elliott Broidy that required him to pay her $1.6 million in exchange for her agreement to maintain confidentiality about their extramarital affair, her pregnancy, and the subsequent termination. The agreement, negotiated with involvement from Michael Cohen on Broidy's side, employed pseudonyms and boilerplate language akin to those used in nondisclosure agreements associated with Donald Trump, such as references to a "private individual." The payment structure called for eight quarterly installments totaling the $1.6 million sum. Broidy made the first two installments, amounting to $400,000, but ceased further payments in mid-2018 after media reports disclosed the affair and agreement's existence. He cited the leaks as a breach of the confidentiality clause, arguing they nullified his ongoing obligations under the terms. Keith Davidson, acting as Bechard's attorney, facilitated the drafting and negotiation of the agreement. The public exposure stemmed from these leaks, which Broidy attributed to intermediaries connected to the deal, prompting him to withhold the remaining $1.2 million.

Lawsuit against Broidy

In July 2018, Shera Bechard filed a civil lawsuit against Elliott Broidy in Los Angeles Superior Court (case number BC712913), primarily alleging breach of their January 2018 settlement agreement, under which Broidy was obligated to pay her $1.6 million in eight quarterly installments of $200,000 each to resolve claims of personal injury arising from their affair. After Broidy paid the initial $400,000, he withheld the third installment due July 1, 2018, citing Bechard's breach of the nondisclosure terms due to third-party leaks about the affair. Bechard sought acceleration of the remaining $1.2 million, plus compensatory and punitive damages for emotional distress, medical expenses, and other harms allegedly stemming from Broidy's conduct. The complaint detailed allegations of misconduct during their encounters, claiming Broidy became "increasingly violent and disturbing," physically injuring Bechard through acts such as choking, slapping, and non-consensual touching, which she attributed in part to his emulation of behaviors he perceived in then-President Donald Trump. Bechard further alleged Broidy refused condom use, failed to disclose his genital herpes diagnosis despite years of awareness, and pressured her to consume excessive alcohol on September 24, 2017—leading to her impregnation—before initially supporting the pregnancy and then demanding an abortion, citing concerns over secrecy and invoking threats related to his firearm ownership and influential connections. Broidy acknowledged the affair and initial payments but denied all claims of violence, coercion, or health nondisclosure, describing them as "false, malicious, and disgusting" fabrications intended to extract further money, and affirmed the relationship was mutually consensual with Bechard independently choosing abortion without pressure. He maintained payments halted solely due to violations of the confidentiality clause by unauthorized disclosures, not any wrongdoing on his part. The suit was filed under seal but unsealed on September 7, 2018, following a judicial ruling by Judge Elizabeth Allen White denying Broidy's motion to maintain secrecy. Broidy subsequently moved to compel private arbitration per the agreement's terms, which the trial court rejected in November 2018; this denial was affirmed on appeal in June 2020 by the California Court of Appeal, Second District, allowing the case to proceed in court.

Disputes with attorneys

In July 2018, Shera Bechard filed a lawsuit in Los Angeles Superior Court against her former attorney Keith Davidson and his firm, Davidson & Associates, PLC, alleging breach of fiduciary duty, professional negligence, and fraud in connection with the negotiation of her nondisclosure agreement with Elliott Broidy. Bechard claimed Davidson deceived her by misrepresenting key terms of the $1.6 million settlement, including failure to disclose a $4.8 million liquidated damages clause for breaches and withholding a full copy of the agreement despite her requests. She further accused him of charging excessive fees—$140,000 total from the first two $200,000 installments, equating to approximately 35%—and improperly deducting $3,292.42 in unsubstantiated costs from a 2017 business trip, while asserting a $420,000 lien on future payments. Bechard retained Davidson on October 31, 2017, after he had already begun discussions with Broidy's representative, Michael Cohen, on November 8, 2017, without fully disclosing his prior involvement in similar arrangements, such as Stormy Daniels' NDA. She alleged Davidson drafted an "unconscionable" agreement favoring Broidy, delayed disbursements of funds, and leaked confidential details of the settlement to Michael Avenatti, Daniels' then-attorney, which prompted Avenatti to publicize aspects of the deal on Twitter on April 12, 2018, leading Broidy to halt payments. Bechard fired Davidson after discovering these issues and sought disgorgement of his fees, damages for lost settlement payments totaling $1.2 million, and declaratory relief. The lawsuit also named Avenatti as a defendant for tortious interference with contract, asserting he knowingly received leaked information from Davidson and publicized it, thereby disrupting Bechard's economic relationship with Broidy without any confidentiality caveats from Davidson. The initially sealed complaint sparked a public feud among attorneys: Avenatti demanded unsealing and accused Bechard's new counsel at Stris & Maher LLP of leaking details to The Wall Street Journal to pressure Broidy, while Peter Stris denounced Avenatti's conduct as a "media sideshow" and professional disgrace; the judge ordered the complaint provided to Avenatti but maintained the seal temporarily amid media challenges. Broidy separately contended Davidson breached confidentiality by sharing with Avenatti, though Davidson's representatives denied any wrongdoing as "false and defamatory." These attorney disputes intertwined with Bechard's broader breach-of-contract claim against Broidy, which proceeded to arbitration denial in 2020 after Broidy sought to compel it under the settlement terms. Bechard maintained that the attorneys' actions, not her own, caused the payment cessation, emphasizing Davidson's undisclosed conflicts and Avenatti's role in escalating publicity.
