Donkey Kong, an arcade game designed by Shigeru Miyamoto, was released in Japan. The game was a breakthrough success and is credited with saving Nintendo from financial ruin. It introduced the character of Jumpman, who would later be renamed Mario, and established many of the conventions of the platform game genre.
