The Whitecaps transferred Becher to Danish 1st Division club AC Horsens on January 17, 2024.[21] Seven months later, Becher returned to MLS, joining St. Louis City on a one-year loan deal until June 2025.[22][23] On April 25, 2025, St. Louis opted to make the loan permanent.[24]

Childhood and family background
Simon Becher was born on July 20, 1999, in Topeka, Kansas, United States.[11][13] He was raised in Brooklyn, Connecticut, starting from early childhood, where he grew up in a family deeply rooted in soccer traditions.[7] Becher is the second youngest of five siblings, including his older sisters Emily and Elaina, older brother Adam, and younger brother Nathan, born to parents Mike and Mary Becher, both of whom played soccer collegiately at the Missouri University of Science and Technology.[14][15][16] The family's athletic heritage extended further, with his uncle Bill Becher, who served as a technical advisor for Penn FC in the United Soccer League and is a noted youth coach, being inducted into the St. Louis Soccer Hall of Fame, alongside his grandfather of the same name, who was also a Hall of Fame member.[14] This environment fostered an early interest in sports, particularly soccer, as all five siblings participated in the sport from a young age, often playing together under their parents' guidance.[16][17] Becher attended The Woodstock Academy, a private boarding school in Woodstock, Connecticut, where he balanced academics and extracurriculars. He graduated in June 2018. During his time there, Becher earned academic recognition, including high honors in his sophomore year (2016) and honors listings in subsequent quarters, reflecting consistent strong performance in the classroom.[18][19]Youth soccer development
Becher's youth soccer journey began with the Oakwood Soccer Club in Glastonbury, Connecticut, where he played for three seasons under head coach Kevin Bacher.[2] During this period, he contributed to the team's success, including helping secure the Northeast Division Championship in 2016 as part of the U.S. Soccer Development Academy.[2] Teaming up with forward Kamer Nuhiu, Becher formed a dynamic attacking partnership that emphasized speed and finishing, leading Oakwood's offensive efforts in competitive matches.[20] Over his time with Oakwood, Becher established himself as a prolific scorer, tallying more than 70 goals in Development Academy play and demonstrating his potential as a forward.[21] In the 2015-16 U-16 season alone, he ranked among the top goal scorers with 11 goals across 14 games, showcasing his clinical finishing and movement off the ball.[22] By his senior year of high school, he had accumulated 45 goals over three seasons with the club, highlighting his growth into a standout talent.[17] Although Becher attended The Woodstock Academy in Woodstock, Connecticut, he did not participate in high school soccer due to U.S. Soccer regulations that barred players from elite club programs like Oakwood from competing at the scholastic level.[17] This decision allowed him to prioritize club play for greater exposure to college recruiters and national team scouts. His family supported this path, with his younger brother Nathan following suit by joining Oakwood.[17] Becher's performances earned early recognition as a promising forward, including a call-up to the U.S. U-20 national team training camp in January 2018 under coach Tab Ramos. He was also part of the U.S. U-20 roster for a training camp and friendlies in Honduras in May 2018.[14][23][24] Scouts and observers viewed him as a "hidden gem" for his goal-scoring instincts and athleticism, setting the stage for his collegiate recruitment.[14]College career
Holy Cross Crusaders
Simon Becher enrolled at the College of the Holy Cross in the fall of 2018 as a member of the men's soccer program's incoming class of 2022.[25] As a freshman, he joined the Holy Cross Crusaders competing in the Patriot League, where he transitioned effectively from high school and club soccer to the collegiate level by securing a prominent role on the team roster.[26] Playing as a forward, Becher appeared in all 17 games during the 2018 season, starting 16 of them, and emerged as the Crusaders' leading scorer with seven goals and two assists for a total of 16 points.[2] His scoring output ranked him fifth in the Patriot League for total goals and sixth for goals per game, highlighting his immediate impact despite being a first-year player.[27] Becher's strong debut season earned him multiple accolades, including selection to the All-Patriot League Third Team—the first for a Holy Cross freshman since 2014—and Patriot League Rookie of the Week honors on September 17 following a three-goal performance across two matches.[27] He was also named the ckSmithSuperior Crusader of the Week for his contributions from September 10-16.[28] After completing his lone year at Holy Cross, Becher transferred to Saint Louis University.[3]Saint Louis Billikens
After transferring from Holy Cross following his freshman year, Simon Becher joined the Saint Louis University Billikens in 2019 as a sophomore forward.[3] Over three seasons from 2019 to 2021, he appeared in 47 matches, scoring 21 goals and providing 13 assists, contributing significantly to the team's Atlantic 10 Conference success.[3] Becher's 2019 season was limited by an off-season injury that caused him to miss the first five games; he made his Billiken debut against Memphis, appearing in 12 matches with six starts, two goals, and one assist.[3] His goals came against Marquette and UMass, while his assist set up a game-winner in the latter match.[3] The 2020 season, shortened and played in the spring of 2021 due to the COVID-19 pandemic, saw improved production with 14 appearances (13 starts), five goals, and two assists for 12 points, earning him first-team All-Atlantic 10 honors.[3] Notable contributions included a game-winning goal against Lipscomb and five points across matches versus St. Bonaventure.[3] Becher's 2021 junior campaign marked his breakout, as he tallied 14 goals and 10 assists for 38 points in 21 matches, ranking second nationally in points.[3][5] He scored in nine consecutive matches and notched an 11-match scoring streak, including game-winners against UMass, Kansas City, Fordham, and Dayton.[3] In the Atlantic 10 Conference tournament, Becher scored in the quarterfinal victory over Dayton, helping the Billikens secure both the regular-season and tournament titles en route to an NCAA quarterfinal appearance and a 16-1-4 record.[3][5] At the conclusion of his college career, Becher was named Saint Louis University's Most Outstanding Male Student-Athlete.[29]Club career
Early semi-professional stints
Following his freshman year at the College of the Holy Cross, Becher joined Reading United AC of USL League Two for the 2019 season, where he appeared in 10 matches and scored 7 goals, helping the team reach the league final as Eastern Conference champions.[21] His clinical finishing during this stint earned him recognition as part of USL League Two's 20 Under 20 list.[30] After transferring to Saint Louis University and posting strong collegiate numbers, Becher returned to USL League Two in 2021 with the Ocean City Nor'easters, captaining the side while scoring 11 goals in 12 regular-season appearances to earn All-League First Team honors.[21] These performances, combined with his standout college output of 21 goals and 13 assists over three seasons at Saint Louis, elevated his profile ahead of the professional draft.[31] In preparation for the 2022 MLS SuperDraft, Becher participated in the MLS College Soccer Showcase in December 2021, competing in training sessions, physical testing, interviews, and exhibition matches alongside other top collegiate prospects.[32] On January 11, 2022, Vancouver Whitecaps FC selected him 16th overall in the first round.[31]Vancouver Whitecaps FC
Becher joined Vancouver Whitecaps FC on loan to their MLS Next Pro affiliate, Whitecaps FC 2, in March 2022 following his selection as the 16th overall pick in the 2022 MLS SuperDraft.[21] During the 2022 season, he made 22 appearances, starting 20, and led the team with 8 goals and 4 assists, contributing significantly to their playoff qualification.[1][8] Becher earned his MLS debut with the first team on August 5, 2022, against Houston Dynamo FC, where he came off the bench and scored the game-winning goal in a 2-1 victory, marking his only appearance that year with 1 goal.[33] In November 2022, Whitecaps FC signed him to a full MLS contract through 2023, with club options for subsequent years, transitioning him permanently from the Next Pro side.[21] In his first full MLS season in 2023, Becher appeared in 19 regular-season matches, scoring 4 goals and providing 1 assist in 604 minutes, often as a substitute.[8] His scoring efficiency peaked early, as he set an MLS record for the fastest player to net their first four career goals, achieving the milestone in just 87 minutes of total playing time across four matches, highlighted by a brace against CF Montréal on April 1.[34] This performance earned him MLS Player of the Matchday honors for Matchday 6, making him the first MLS Next Pro alumnus to win the award.[35] Becher also scored once in the Canadian Championship, contributing to Vancouver's title win that year.[36] Becher solidified his role as a "super sub" for Whitecaps FC in 2023, frequently entering games to provide energy and finishing, with his contributions aiding the team's offensive depth through the regular season and into early 2024 before his transfer in January.[7][37]AC Horsens
On January 17, 2024, Simon Becher transferred from Vancouver Whitecaps FC to AC Horsens in Denmark's 1. Division, marking his first move to professional soccer in Europe.[37] The deal, reportedly valued in the region of $400,000, allowed Becher to take on a prominent role as a centre-forward in a competitive second-tier league, where Horsens were battling to avoid relegation.[38] During the 2023–24 season, Becher featured in 14 matches for Horsens, scoring three goals and contributing to the team's efforts in the relegation round.[39] His goals came in key fixtures: a right-footed strike in the 13th minute to secure a 1–0 victory over Hillerød Fodbold on Matchday 2 of the relegation group, a header in the 8th minute during a 2–0 win against Næstved Boldklub on Matchday 3, and another header in the 74th minute in a 2–1 loss to Kolding IF on Matchday 19 of the regular season.[40] These contributions highlighted his aerial presence and finishing ability, though the team ultimately finished third in the relegation group, securing their 1. Division status. Becher's prior MLS experience aided his transition to the league's more tactical and physical demands, where he averaged approximately 81 minutes per appearance.[41] Becher's tenure at Horsens ended in July 2024 when he departed on loan to St. Louis City SC through June 2025, with an option to buy.[39]St. Louis City SC
Becher joined St. Louis CITY SC on a loan from Danish First Division club AC Horsens on July 23, 2024, with the deal running through June 2025 and including an option to purchase.[39] During the remainder of the 2024 MLS regular season, he appeared in 9 matches for the club, starting 6 and logging 550 minutes, while scoring 4 goals and recording 0 assists.[42] His goals included a brace in a 3-0 home win over Houston Dynamo FC on October 5, 2024, which not only contributed to a crucial victory but also earned him the Edward Jones Goal of the Month award for October.[43][44] This timely scoring run provided much-needed depth to St. Louis CITY SC's attack amid a season marked by offensive struggles, helping stabilize the forward line as the team pushed for playoff positioning.[6] On April 24, 2025, St. Louis CITY SC exercised the purchase option to acquire Becher on a permanent transfer from AC Horsens, signing him to a two-year contract through 2026 with a club option for an additional year.[45][9] In the 2025 MLS season, Becher featured in 32 regular-season matches, making 11 starts for a total of 1,239 minutes, during which he scored 3 goals and provided 2 assists.[42] Key contributions included the match-winning goal in a 3-0 road victory against defending champions LA Galaxy on March 9, 2025, marking the team's first win of the season, and a late insurance goal in a 3–1 victory over Austin FC on October 4, 2025, which snapped a personal scoring drought and boosted morale late in the campaign.[46][47] These moments underscored his role as a reliable rotation forward, offering versatility across the attacking third and pressing intensity that enhanced team dynamics in a squad focused on high-energy play.[48] As of November 2025, Becher continues to serve as a key squad player for St. Louis CITY SC, with his blend of MLS familiarity and brief European experience from Horsens providing tactical flexibility for future seasons.[49] His permanent status has solidified his place in the roster, positioning him for expanded opportunities in MLS competitions, including potential playoff runs and international call-ups.[9]Playing style and reception
Attributes and strengths
Simon Becher stands at 6 ft 1 in (1.85 m) tall, providing him with a physical profile suited to the centre-forward role, including a strong aerial presence evidenced by his proficiency in headed attempts and aerial duels.[12][50] His build, weighing approximately 185 lbs, allows him to fight effectively for position in the box, contributing to his physical strength as a forward.[51] Despite his height, Becher demonstrates notable speed and quick acceleration for a striker, enabling dynamic runs that complement his role in transition play.[1] Technically, Becher possesses a keen eye for goal and clinical finishing ability, often converting opportunities with minimal touches—typically fewer than two—inside the penalty area.[51] His off-the-ball positioning is a key asset, allowing him to exploit spaces and create chances for himself and teammates through intelligent movement.[51] These skills have been particularly evident in his ability to score efficiently, as seen in his MLS record for the fastest four goals by a player, achieved in just 87 minutes across three substitute appearances in 2023.[51] Becher's versatility shines as a centre-forward who thrives in a "super sub" capacity, injecting energy and immediate goal threat from the bench while adapting to starting roles when needed.[51] However, he has shown occasional inconsistency in securing consistent starting positions, partly due to challenges in holding the ball under pressure and physical matchups against top defenders.[50][52] In his 2025 season with St. Louis City SC, Becher has made 32 appearances with three goals as of November, highlighting ongoing questions about sustaining output despite his movement and finishing.[1]Expert opinions
Vancouver Whitecaps head coach Vanni Sartini praised Becher's early 2023 performances, expressing satisfaction with his man-of-the-match display as a breakout striker following a multi-goal outing that contributed to the team's rapid ascent in the standings.[53] Sartini noted Becher's focused work on hold-up play, one-touch skills, movement, and finishing, which facilitated his integration into the first team and fueled his quick goal-scoring surge.[7] At Saint Louis University, Becher's athletic achievements, including United Soccer Coaches All-American honors in 2021 as the Atlantic 10 Offensive Player of the Year, underscored his leadership on the Billikens squad, where he led the team in scoring and assists while exemplifying team-oriented play.[5] Analysts viewed Becher's 2024 transfer to AC Horsens as a developmental step abroad, with the Danish club's $400,000 investment signaling confidence in his growth as a versatile forward capable of adapting to European physicality.[54] His subsequent MLS return to St. Louis City SC on loan and permanent deal through 2026 was hailed as a strategic acquisition, with experts noting his superior per-minute impact over predecessors like João Klauss and positioning him as a core piece of the attacking trio alongside Marcel Hartel and Cedric Teuchert.[55] Becher's finishing efficiency and off-ball movement have elevated team performance, though questions linger on sustaining his output under interim head coach David Critchley.[56][57] Early evaluations from U.S. U-20 national team coaches in 2019 noticed Becher's potential as a No. 9 striker due to his clinical finishing.[7] As of 2025, media profiles from St. Louis City SC portray Becher as a "spark plug" who injects energy into matches, a reliable goal scorer, and a "game changer" capable of propelling the team to victories through his relentless work rate and opportunistic play.[58]Career statistics
