Family background
Slater Young was born on December 19, 1987, in Cebu City, Philippines, into a prominent Chinese-Filipino family. As the eldest of four siblings, he grew up in an environment shaped by familial responsibilities and entrepreneurial pursuits. His parents, John and Salome Young, provided a stable household that emphasized hard work and community ties common in Cebuano-Chinese circles.[10][11][2] John Young, a civil engineer by training, founded and owns Hi-Speed Construction and Development Corporation, a Mandaue-based firm specializing in pre-engineered steel building systems. From a young age, Slater accompanied his father to construction sites, gaining hands-on exposure to engineering principles and business operations within the family enterprise. This immersion in the steel manufacturing and construction sector, integral to Cebu’s industrial landscape, fostered his early interest in the field.[2][3] Raised amid Chinese-Filipino traditions, Young’s upbringing reflected conservative values such as family loyalty and perseverance, which were reinforced through his parents’ guidance and the community’s cultural norms. These influences contributed to his disciplined approach to life and career. This foundational period transitioned into his formal education at local Cebu institutions.[10]Education
Slater Young completed his primary and secondary education at Sacred Heart School–Ateneo de Cebu in Mandaue City, Cebu.[2] Influenced by his family's involvement in the construction industry, Young pursued higher education in engineering and earned a bachelor's degree in civil engineering from the University of San Carlos in Cebu City.[2][12] He passed the civil engineering licensure exam on his second attempt, after failing the first.[2] During his university studies, Young focused on core civil engineering principles, including structural design and materials science, which provided foundational knowledge for practical applications in building and infrastructure development.[2]Professional career
Civil engineering
After graduating from the University of San Carlos with a degree in civil engineering, Slater Young joined his family's construction firm, Hi-Speed Construction Corp., established by his father, where he gained hands-on experience in the industry starting in the mid-2000s.[13][12] In his early professional roles at the firm, Young contributed to residential and commercial construction projects in Cebu, taking on responsibilities in project management, structural design, and site supervision to ensure efficient execution and compliance with building standards.[14][15] Young applied his civil engineering knowledge to tackle regional challenges, particularly incorporating earthquake-resistant features in designs to mitigate risks in the seismically active Philippines.[16] Over time, he advanced from operational roles to leadership positions within the family business, honing skills in construction oversight before transitioning to independent entrepreneurship around 2015.[13]Entrepreneurship and LiteBlock
In 2015, Jan Slater Young founded Litecrete Corp. as its CEO and president, establishing the company in Cebu, Philippines, to innovate in the production of lightweight concrete materials for the local construction industry.[17][13] Drawing briefly from his prior civil engineering experience, Young aimed to address inefficiencies in traditional building practices by developing sustainable alternatives to conventional concrete hollow blocks (CHB).[18] The core innovation of Litecrete Corp. is LiteBlock, a lightweight, interlocking concrete block designed as an eco-friendly substitute for standard CHB. Introduced in early 2015, LiteBlock features lower density than traditional blocks, reducing structural load, while incorporating an interlocking design that eliminates the need for mortar in many applications, speeding up construction and cutting costs.[19][20] Its composition provides superior thermal insulation compared to CHB, keeping interiors cooler in the tropical climate—along with enhanced soundproofing and fire resistance suitable for residential and commercial use.[18][20] Additionally, LiteBlock promotes sustainability by using less cement and incorporating materials that resist mold, fungus, and algae, contributing to cleaner indoor air and lower environmental impact during production.[21] These properties make it particularly adaptable to the Philippines' seismic and typhoon-prone conditions.[20][22] Under Young's leadership, Litecrete Corp. grew from a nascent startup focused on local manufacturing to a nationwide supplier, serving thousands of projects including houses, warehouses, and high-rise buildings across the Philippines.[22] The company transitioned from relying on imported lightweight concrete technologies—common among Cebu developers at the time—to pioneering domestic production, which enhanced cost-efficiency and accessibility for builders recovering from natural disasters.[13] By emphasizing sustainability and innovation, Litecrete secured several patents and expanded distribution through local partners in major cities like Manila, Cebu, and Davao.[22] Young and Litecrete overcame significant early hurdles, including securing initial research and development funding in a market dominated by conventional materials and limited awareness of lightweight alternatives.[17] Market adoption was gradual, as the Philippine construction sector initially favored familiar CHB despite rising demands for energy-efficient and disaster-resilient options; however, promotional efforts highlighting LiteBlock's cost savings and performance advantages gradually built traction among developers and homeowners.[17][23] These challenges were addressed through targeted demonstrations and partnerships, positioning Litecrete as a key player in sustainable building solutions.Notable projects and achievements
One of Slater Young's most prominent projects is The Rise at Monterrazas, a 19-story mountainside condominium development in Cebu City launched in 2024. Inspired by the Banaue Rice Terraces, the project features terraced architecture that integrates with the natural topography, utilizing lightweight concrete blocks for construction to promote sustainability and structural efficiency.[24][25] The design earned the Architizer A+ Jury Award in 2024 for its innovative Filipino-inspired residential architecture, recognizing its blend of luxury living with environmental harmony.[26] Young has also led other initiatives emphasizing sustainable urban development, such as Nila Residences in Manila, his first project in the capital launched in 2025. This luxury courtyard community in Paco features green open spaces, private balconies, and timeless architecture designed for long-term durability and community integration.[27] Similarly, the Montecima Clubhouse, completed in 2025 as part of the Monterrazas de Cebu complex, showcases brutalist elements with seamless indoor-outdoor flow and storm-resistant engineering, earning a gold award from the International Design Awards for public architecture in 2024.[28] These projects highlight Young's focus on eco-friendly materials and adaptive designs that minimize environmental impact while enhancing resident well-being. In September 2025, Young publicly denied allegations that he benefited from public funds through government contracts related to his developments, clarifying that his firm has no such projects.[29] However, the Monterrazas project faced renewed scrutiny in November 2025 following Typhoon Tino, which caused severe flooding in Cebu and displaced thousands. The Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) initiated a probe into the site's compliance with environmental laws, amid claims from residents and experts that the hillside development contributed to worsened downstream flooding due to potential improper land alteration and inadequate flood mitigation.[25][30] On November 14, 2025, the DENR reported multiple environmental violations at the site, including issues with land alteration.[31] The developer welcomed the investigation and denied that the project caused the deadly floods.[32] Young has maintained that the project adheres to all regulations and incorporates sustainable practices to prevent such issues. Following the 6.9-magnitude earthquake that struck northern Cebu on September 30, 2025, Young's projects, including Monterrazas, were noted for their structural integrity, with no reported major damage despite the event's impact on surrounding areas that resulted in at least 69 fatalities. This resilience underscores the earthquake-resistant features engineered into his designs, such as reinforced foundations and material choices tested for seismic performance.[33]Entertainment career
Reality television
Slater Young entered Pinoy Big Brother: Unlimited as one of the initial housemates on October 29, 2011, at the age of 23, representing Cebu as a civil engineer working in his family's construction business.[34][1] Inside the house, Young was portrayed as a hardworking and dedicated participant, often taking on leadership roles in weekly and individual tasks that tested housemates' intelligence, courage, and teamwork, such as collaborative challenges with fellow housemate Joseph Biggel.[4][35] He formed key alliances, including navigating tensions like a confrontation with Paco Evangelista, which highlighted his social game and contributed to his growing popularity among viewers for his straightforward and reliable demeanor.[35] These efforts helped him endure 155 days in the house, emerging as a fan favorite through consistent performance in tasks and house dynamics.[4] On March 31, 2012, during the Big Night finale at the Quirino Grandstand, Young was declared the Big Winner of Pinoy Big Brother: Unlimited, securing 40.02% of the nationwide text votes and becoming the first male winner in a regular season of the show.[36][37][1] His prizes included ₱2 million in cash, an appliance showcase from Abenson, an Asian tour package, an internet TV, and a Crystal Clear water-refilling station franchise.[37][1] Young's victory significantly boosted his public recognition across the Philippines, propelling him into entertainment opportunities such as signing with ABS-CBN's Star Magic and guest appearances on various programs.[37] He later reflected on the experience as life-changing, enhancing his confidence and openness, though he stepped back from show business around 2014 to prioritize business ventures.[35]Acting roles
