Sritej (born 22 August 1987) is an Indian actor known for his roles in Telugu-language films.[1][2] He began his career as an assistant director on Telugu projects such as Aadavari Matalaku Arthale Verule (2007) before transitioning to acting.[2]
Sritej gained significant recognition for portraying politician N. Chandrababu Naidu in the 2019 biographical film Lakshmi's NTR, directed by Ram Gopal Varma, where he depicted the son-in-law's role in the political events surrounding N. T. Rama Rao.[3][4] His other credits include supporting roles in major productions like Pushpa: The Rise (2021), Dhamaka (2022), and Pushpa 2: The Rule (2024).[1] In November 2024, a police case was registered against him in Hyderabad for alleged rape and cheating following a complaint from his former live-in partner.[5]
Early life
Background and education
Sritej was born on 22 August 1987 in Vijayawada, Andhra Pradesh, India.[2] His family background includes a father who worked as a farmer and shared the same birth date with Sritej and the Telugu actor Chiranjeevi; his mother provided support during his initial career pursuits, such as assisting with photography for auditions.[2] Details on Sritej's formal education are not publicly documented. His father arranged for him to undergo training in Hyderabad for the Indian Police Service (IPS), but Sritej chose to forgo this path in favor of entering the film industry.[2] He has shown personal interest in journalism, expressing a desire during his early years to pursue a related course at Telugu University.[2] From a young age, Sritej cultivated hobbies including travelling, dancing, writing, and photography, which later influenced his creative endeavors.[2] Lacking formal acting training, he practiced dialogues at home to prepare for roles.[2]Acting career
Early professional steps
Sritej entered the Telugu film industry as an assistant director in 2006, assisting on projects such as Aadavari Matalaku Arthale Verule (2007).[6] He spent approximately 13 years in behind-the-scenes roles before transitioning to on-screen performances.[3] His acting debut occurred in 2013 with the Telugu film Naa Samiranga, where he portrayed the character Shiva.[7] [2] Subsequent early roles included a supporting part as Devineni Nehru in the political drama Vangaveeti (2016), marking his initial involvement in biographical and historical narratives.[7] He continued with appearances in films like Touch Chesi Chudu (2018), building experience in ensemble casts prior to more prominent biopics.[7]Breakthrough role
Sritej achieved prominence with his portrayal of Nara Chandrababu Naidu in the 2019 Telugu biographical film Lakshmi's NTR, directed by Ram Gopal Varma and released on March 29, 2019. The film chronicles the final years of N.T. Rama Rao's political career, emphasizing his marriage to Lakshmi Parvati and the internal conflicts within the Telugu Desam Party, including Naidu's rebellion against Rama Rao.[8] In the narrative, Sritej's character is depicted as the ambitious son-in-law who leads a coup to oust Rama Rao, a portrayal aligned with the film's sympathetic stance toward Lakshmi Parvati and critical of Naidu's actions.[9] Sritej prepared for the role by deeply immersing himself in Naidu's mannerisms and psyche, stating that he aimed to "live" the character rather than simply mimic it.[3] His performance received acclaim for its authenticity and intensity, with reviewers describing it as finely calibrated and a standout element amid the film's melodramatic tone. Critics highlighted how Sritej effectively captured Naidu's cunning and determination, stealing scenes and drawing attention despite the controversial scripting.[8] The role marked Sritej's transition from supporting parts, such as in NTR Kathanayakudu earlier that year, to a more prominent antagonist figure, earning him widespread recognition in Telugu cinema.[10] While the film itself faced criticism for its propagandistic elements and lack of nuanced analysis, Sritej's contribution was consistently praised as a highlight, propelling his career forward.[11][12]Subsequent projects and roles
In the years following his breakthrough performance as Nara Chandrababu Naidu in Lakshmi's NTR (2019), Sritej transitioned to supporting and antagonistic roles in high-profile Telugu action thrillers. He portrayed Pushpa's half-brother in Pushpa: The Rise (2021), a blockbuster directed by Sukumar that depicted the protagonist's rise in the red sandalwood smuggling trade, earning over ₹350 crore at the box office.[13] His character added familial tension to the central conflict involving Allu Arjun's titular role. Sritej next appeared in Dhamaka (2022), directed by Trinadha Rao Nakkina, where he played Vikram Chakravarthy, the scheming nephew of a powerful figure opposing the protagonist, played by Ravi Teja. The film, an action entertainer centered on media sensationalism and personal vendettas, featured Sritej in intense confrontational scenes that highlighted his ability to embody ruthless ambition.[14][15] Expanding into mythological and horror genres, Sritej took on the role of Guraja in Mangalavaaram (2023), a film exploring superstition and village rituals, and Devaraju, a henchman to the antagonist, in Ravanasura (2023), a courtroom thriller starring Ravi Teja as a lawyer entangled in a web of deceit. These performances showcased his versatility in portraying morally ambiguous figures amid escalating conflicts.[16] Sritej reprised elements of his Pushpa character in Pushpa: The Rule - Part 2 (2024), contributing to the sequel's narrative of power struggles and vendettas, which premiered to massive crowds and grossed over ₹1,000 crore globally despite production delays.[17] His ongoing involvement in such franchise entries solidified his presence in commercial cinema, often in roles amplifying antagonist dynamics or familial betrayals.Filmography
Films
Sritej debuted in Telugu cinema with a supporting role in Vangaveeti (2016), a political drama directed by Krishna Vamsi.[7] He next appeared in Touch Chesi Chudu (2018), portraying the character Satyadev in the action comedy directed by Vikram Kumar and starring Ravi Teja.[7] In Lakshmi's NTR (2019), directed by Ram Gopal Varma, Sritej played the pivotal role of politician Nara Chandrababu Naidu, earning recognition for his performance in the biographical film focusing on N.T. Rama Rao's political life.[2][3] Sritej featured as Pushpa's half-brother in Pushpa: The Rise (2021), the commercially successful action drama directed by Sukumar and starring Allu Arjun.[1] His subsequent credits include a role in Dhamaka (2022), a Telugu remake of the Hindi film A Wednesday, directed by Trinadha Rao Nakkina.[1] Sritej reprised his role as Pushpa's half-brother in Pushpa 2: The Rule (2024), the sequel that became one of the highest-grossing Telugu films.[1]Television
Sritej entered the television domain with the Telugu-language web series Bahishkarana, a six-episode drama directed by Mukesh Prajapathi that explores themes of love, societal ridicule, and relational strife.[18] The series, produced for the OTT platform ZEE5, premiered on July 19, 2024, and features Sritej alongside lead actors Anjali and Ravindra Vijay, with supporting cast including Ananya Nagalla and Shanmukh.[19] His involvement marked a shift from his established film career, contributing to the series' positive reception for its narrative intensity and ensemble performances.[18]| Year | Title | Role | Platform |
