Ogg in March 2018

After moving to New York City, he began acting in television shows such as Law & Order and Third Watch, in addition to some theater work and voice acting. He retired from acting in 2003 but returned in 2008.

After taking a break from acting to build a house, he was hired by Rockstar Games as the voice and motion capture artist for Trevor Philips in their 2013 video game Grand Theft Auto V.[3][4][5] His character was critically acclaimed and he received numerous award nominations as a result.[6][7][8][9] In February 2014, he received an award on the 3rd Annual New York Videogame Critics Circle Awards for Best Overall Acting in a Game.[10] Ogg later reprised his role as Trevor Phillips in Grand Theft Auto Online in 2015 as a part of the "Series A Funding" heist, and the 2016 YouTube short film GTA VR.[11][12][13]

Ogg made two appearances in Better Call Saul as Sobchak, a mercenary and private detective. In the 2015 episode "Pimento", he is one of three bodyguards hired for a protection job before getting into a verbal altercation with Mike Ehrmantraut. Mike humiliates Sobchak by disarming and incapacitating him. He reappeared in the 2020 episode "Dedicado a Max", undertaking clandestine investigative work for Saul Goodman under the pseudonym "Mr X". The name Sobchak was likely inspired by The Big Lebowski character Walter Sobchak, also a security consultant and weapons enthusiast with an inflated sense of his own achievements and abilities.

In The Walking Dead season 6 finale, he made his debut as Simon, a member of the Saviors and one of the main antagonists in season 7.[14] Ogg also portrayed Rebus in the HBO series Westworld, and provides the voice of Professor Venomous in Cartoon Network's animated series OK K.O.! Let's Be Heroes. In 2019, Ogg portrayed Flexon in the second season of the 2016 series The Tick.

Ogg noted in an interview that he is aware of being typecast as "the crazy guy and the unpredictable guy" (with one example being his portrayal of Trevor in Grand Theft Auto V) though he did not mind this if it led to steady work. He admitted, however, that he would ideally like to explore "different characters [and] different worlds", like his role as a father in the 2019 drama The Short History of the Long Road.[2]

In 2022, he appeared in Dan Mangan's music video for "Fire Escape", playing a personification of Mangan's self-critical inner voice.[15]

On October 5, 2022, a YouTuber uploaded a video titled "Does Steven Ogg Hate Trevor?" in which they shared a series of Cameo requests they had made to Ogg, asking him to perform in-character as Trevor Philips from Grand Theft Auto V. The author of the video claimed that despite paying $140, Ogg did not fulfill the request as expected. Instead, they described the actor's responses as passive-aggressive, accusing him of berating him during the videos. In those Cameos, Ogg emphasized that he is "an actor" and referred to Trevor as "a cartoon character," expressing irritation at being addressed as the character.[16]

On February 4, 2025, Ogg publicly addressed the topic, during an appearance on fellow actor Michael Rosenbaum's podcast, Inside of You. When asked directly if he hated Trevor, Ogg replied, "No. He's a great character, he's awesome. And, like—still, Shawn [Fonteno] and Ned [Luke], we're friends and we were just doing a ComicCon this past weekend." He went on to explain that he finds it "weird" when fans refer to actors by their character's names, and that he doesn't understand how people equate him with Trevor, who he describes as "a cartoon."[17]

In 2024, Ogg appeared in Amyl and the Sniffers music video for "U Should Not Be Doing That".[18]

Personal life

[edit]

Ogg is a single father and has one son, named Bodhi,[19] the namesake being his character's personal vehicle in Grand Theft Auto V.[20] He currently resides in Pasadena, California.[21]

Steven Ogg was born on November 4, 1973, in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada. His family relocated to Calgary, Alberta, soon after, where he spent the majority of his childhood and adolescence in a typical middle-class Canadian household. Ogg attended Dr. E.P. Scarlett High School in Calgary. His father is Canadian, while his mother is British, though specific details about their professions or personal lives remain private and have not been widely disclosed in public sources. Information on siblings is similarly limited, with no confirmed public records detailing any brothers or sisters. Ogg's early exposure to the performing arts occurred through involvement in local theater productions in during his formative years, which sparked an initial interest in creative expression. He also participated in school activities that nurtured a broader appreciation for the arts, reflecting the supportive yet unremarkable environment of his upbringing.

Acting training and early influences

Ogg initially aspired to a professional career in , playing as a backup for the Dinos, but a severe injury during his youth led him to pivot to acting. He relocated from his hometown in , , to around the age of 20 in the early to pursue professional acting training. There, he immersed himself in the city's vibrant theater scene, residing for approximately 20 years while honing his craft through studies and practical experiences, including briefly attending the earlier. This move marked a pivotal shift from his Canadian roots, where he had already begun exploring performance arts during his youth. His early influences were rooted in childhood theater activities in , including elementary performances that ignited his passion for acting. Notably, Ogg recalled performing as in a production, an experience he described as the starting point of his interest in the . These formative moments, combined with participation in local theater while growing up, sparked a particular fascination with voice expression and physical performance, elements that would later define much of his work. At age 10, Ogg gained his first on-camera experience through an advertisement for the , further fueling his enthusiasm for performance. During his training period in New York prior to 1999, he engaged in minor theater productions and workshops, building foundational skills in and character development without yet entering major professional roles. These early endeavors, influenced by the dynamic Canadian theater tradition he carried from , laid the groundwork for his versatile approach to acting.

Career

Early roles and career hiatus

Ogg's professional acting career commenced in the late 1990s with minor roles in television and film. He made his debut in the independent drama Giving It Up (1999), portraying the character Andre. On television, he appeared in an episode of the long-running series in 2000, playing Mark Vee. Ogg also appeared as Shooter in an episode of in 2001. These early appearances were supplemented by work in commercials and voiceovers, reflecting his initial forays into the industry after training in New York. Throughout the early 2000s, Ogg continued to secure small parts in low-budget films and additional television guest roles, often in New York-based productions. However, consistent breakthroughs eluded him, leading to sporadic employment in the field. To sustain himself during this period, he took on various odd jobs, including personal training in , catering, construction, and working in a coffee shop. These roles highlighted the financial challenges of establishing an career in a competitive market. In 2003, Ogg stepped away from acting for a five-year hiatus, during which he focused on personal endeavors such as designing and building a house in the countryside near New York. This break allowed him to develop practical skills in construction while addressing immediate financial needs through related work. He returned to the industry in 2008, marking a renewed commitment to his craft after this period of reflection and self-sufficiency.

Breakthrough in video games

Ogg's breakthrough in voice acting and motion capture came with his portrayal of in (2013), developed by . After a six-year career hiatus, Ogg's agent suggested he audition for the role, leading to an initial taping with a casting director in front of a blue screen. Weeks later, he attended a callback at Rockstar's studios, where he was paired with , who played Michael De Santa; their immediate chemistry during the session convinced the team to cast them together. The performance required Ogg to provide both voice work and full-body motion capture, capturing Trevor's face, movements, and dialogue simultaneously in a motion-capture suit equipped with facial markers and cameras. Approximately 90% of the recording occurred during these sessions, allowing for integrated physical and vocal delivery without traditional sets or costumes, which Ogg described as a challenging yet imaginative process akin to a "team sport" with Rockstar's directors. He contributed improvisation by interpreting ambiguous script elements to deepen Trevor's chaotic personality, evolving traits like his distinctive walk, speech patterns, and reactive mannerisms over the three-year production, aiming to portray the character as multidimensional rather than one-dimensional. This collaboration with Rockstar emphasized performance-driven development, where Ogg's input helped refine Trevor's unhinged yet vulnerable archetype. The role catapulted Ogg to global recognition, as Grand Theft Auto V became one of the best-selling video games of all time, shipping over 215 million units worldwide by May 2025. Trevor's popularity drove a massive fanbase, with Ogg noting fans' appreciation for the character's complexity, which shifted his career toward prominent opportunities in the following the hiatus. Building on this success, Ogg reprised the role in minor appearances within updates through 2015, including contact missions and heists that expanded Trevor's narrative in the online mode. These projects solidified his presence in gaming voice work, leveraging the breakout acclaim from the base game.

Television and film work

Ogg's transition to prominent live-action roles in television and film gained momentum following his performance in , which opened doors to casts in high-profile series and features. In 2015, Ogg appeared in the AMC series as Sobchak, a and hired as a , showcasing his ability to portray tough, no-nonsense enforcers in tense procedural scenarios. Ogg reprised the role in the 2020 episode "". His brief but memorable turns highlighted the dynamics of the show's criminal underworld, where Sobchak's physical presence and curt demeanor added layers to scenes involving high-stakes security details. That same year, Ogg starred in the independent horror-comedy film as Alex, a ruthless antagonist who kidnaps and tortures the protagonist's daughter to draw out a supernatural foe. Alex's role emphasized Ogg's skill in embodying predatory intensity within a blending dark humor and violence, contributing to the film's exploration of isolation and vengeance. Ogg joined the cast of HBO's in 2016, portraying , a bandit host in the theme park's simulated Old West environment across the first two seasons. As part of the ensemble, Rebus served as a recurring figure encountered by guests, his programmed savagery underscoring the series' themes of and exploitation, with Ogg's performance amplifying the host's chaotic interactions in the park's loops. From 2016 to 2018, Ogg portrayed Simon in AMC's The Walking Dead, emerging as Negan's charismatic yet brutal second-in-command among the Saviors in a post-apocalyptic world overrun by zombies. Simon's arc began as a loyal enforcer executing resource raids and subjugating communities, but evolved into a power-hungry rival to Negan, culminating in a failed coup and his demise, which Ogg infused with a mix of sly menace and unhinged aggression that heightened the storyline's interpersonal conflicts. His contribution enriched the series' depiction of authoritarian survivalism, making Simon a standout villain whose actions drove key plot tensions in seasons seven and eight. In the 2016 sci-fi sequel Independence Day: Resurgence, Ogg played Captain Andrew Williams, a military officer involved in humanity's defense against an alien resurgence. His role supported the film's ensemble action sequences, portraying disciplined resolve amid global catastrophe. Ogg's most extended television commitment came in TNT's from 2020 to 2024, where he recurred as Pike, a battle-hardened Tail-section leader and former convict navigating class warfare aboard a perpetual-motion train in a frozen dystopia. Pike's evolution spanned from a instigator challenging the train's hierarchy—initially leading uprisings before being sidelined—to a pragmatic survivor forging uneasy alliances, including a controversial deal with upper-class factions that tested his loyalties and underscored the series' themes of inequality and . Ogg's portrayal captured Pike's scarred resilience and opportunistic cunning, making him a pivotal figure in the ensemble's power struggles across all four seasons.
