A group of students study in Currier House's dining hall

A study group is a small group of people who regularly meet to discuss shared fields of study.[1] These groups can be found in a high school or college/university setting, within companies, occasionally primary/junior school and sometimes middle school. Professional advancement organizations also may encourage study groups. Study groups have helped students who have trouble being in a large group setting.

Each group is unique and draws on the backgrounds and abilities of its members to determine the material that will be covered. Often, a leader who is not actively studying the material will direct group activities. Some colleges actively set up study group programs for students to sign up.

Typical college level academic groups include 5-20 students and an administrator or tutor drawn from the graduate program or a senior student or a faculty. Professional groups are often smaller.

When students study in groups, they can motivate and encourage each other and lessen procrastination. Also, students are able to learn some studying skills and habits by observing others' study skills and they can incorporate it in their studying routine. Teaching concepts and information to others can help be more familiar and master those concepts. In addition, some students might be uncomfortable asking a question in class and they might feel more comfortable asking someone in a small group. It can create a more fun and positive experience for students.[2][3]

History

Founding and early development (1980s–1990s)

Study Group traces its origins to 1989, when businessmen Andrew Colin and Duncan acquired the Embassy in , , establishing the British Study Group with initial centers in and a second school soon opened in , near . This acquisition built on Colin's prior ownership of Bellerbys College, a provider of university access programs, laying the groundwork for combining language training with degree preparation services. In 1994, the company was formally incorporated as British Study Group, a private limited entity dedicated to preparing international students for university degrees through pathway programs and English language courses. John Collyer joined as a third shareholder and director, integrating Embassy and Bellerbys under this structure to focus on foundational educational services for overseas learners. The early operations emphasized pathway programs, enabling international students to bridge academic and language gaps for progression into higher education. By 1996, the company expanded internationally, opening its first overseas centers in the United States and , coinciding with the Group's acquisition of a 40% stake and rebranding to Study Group International. This investment marked an initial shift toward a more commercial, for-profit orientation. In 1999, the Group completed its takeover with a full acquisition for £44 million, solidifying Study Group's position as a profit-driven education provider while maintaining its core focus on international student pathways.

Acquisitions and expansion (1999–2010)

In 1999, the (DMGT) acquired full ownership of for an estimated £44 million, marking a significant shift from its earlier partial ownership structure and providing the capital necessary for accelerated international growth. This enabled Study Group to expand its pathway programs and language training offerings beyond the and , establishing a stronger foundation for global operations by integrating DMGT's resources for marketing and infrastructure development. During the early 2000s, pursued strategic acquisitions to bolster its presence in , most notably purchasing the Center for English Studies (CES), a of schools operating in the United States and . This acquisition expanded Study Group's footprint in key markets for international student recruitment and allowed for the integration of CES's established network into its portfolio, which was subsequently rebranded as Embassy CES and later Embassy English to align with Study Group's branding strategy. The move enhanced administrative capacity and diversified revenue streams through specialized language instruction, contributing to a more robust platform for university pathway services without immediate focus on later divestitures. In 2006, was sold to Australian private equity firm CHAMP Ventures and Petersen Investments for A$176.4 million, a transaction that valued the company at approximately A$203 million including and facilitated further geographic and programmatic expansion, particularly in and the . Under CHAMP's ownership, Study Group invested in scaling its Australian operations, including enhancements to existing centers like Taylors College, and deepened through the ongoing integration of the CES network and new partnerships with American universities. This period of private equity backing supported operational efficiencies and the addition of tailored preparatory programs, positioning the company for sustained growth in high-demand regions. Complementing these ownership changes, relocated its headquarters and Brighton school to purpose-built facilities in the New England Quarter development in 2007, at a cost of approximately £28 million. This move to a modern, centrally located site adjacent to Brighton station improved administrative efficiency, accommodated a growing workforce, and symbolized the company's commitment to infrastructural investment amid its expansion phase. By 2010, was acquired by US-based Partners for A$660 million, providing substantial funding to diversify its educational offerings, including advanced pathway programs and enhanced international study centers. This transaction, which delivered significant returns to CHAMP and Petersen, underscored Study Group's maturation as a global education provider and set the stage for broader program innovation in the subsequent decade.

Modern developments (2011–present)

In 2019, Ardian, a leading private investment firm, acquired a majority stake in Study Group from Providence Equity Partners in a deal valuing the company at approximately £500 million including debt. This transaction provided Study Group with significant capital to support its growth strategy and expansion into new markets. The onset of the in 2020 accelerated 's pivot toward digital education, culminating in its acquisition of Insendi, a London-based EdTech platform specializing in learning experience design. Insendi's technology enabled the development of scalable online and models, allowing Study Group to maintain continuity for international students facing travel restrictions and campus closures. This move positioned the company to address the global shift toward remote education during the crisis. By 2021, had launched expanded online pathway programs, leveraging Insendi's platform to integrate virtual learning with its established university preparation routes. These initiatives facilitated flexible access to undergraduate and postgraduate progression options, with partnerships such as one with enabling fully online delivery. The programs emphasized academic skill-building and cultural adaptation in a digital format, contributing to high progression rates for the 2020/2021 . In response to declining enrollments and evolving student preferences post-pandemic, Study Group closed its Bellerbys College campus in Brighton in September 2022, following the earlier shuttering of its London site. The decision reflected broader trends in international student mobility and cost optimization, with the closure affecting around 200 students who were supported in transitioning to alternative pathways. To revive the Bellerbys brand, Study Group introduced Bellerbys Global in 2024 as a reimagined international foundation program designed for global accessibility. The initiative launched with in-country study centers in , , , and the Greater Bay Area—in partnership with local providers, offering one-year preparation courses for progression to top and international universities. This model emphasizes localized delivery while maintaining rigorous academic standards, with plans for further expansion. In September 2025, Study Group expanded Bellerbys Global to through recruitment for 2026 intakes at Victoria World Academy. In October 2025, it partnered with -based Twin Group to deliver the Bellerbys Foundation Programme at Twin's campuses, marking the brand's return to the . In June 2025, secured tens of millions of pounds in new funding from two of its investors as a financial reprieve. These efforts have sustained student amid ongoing global uncertainties in higher education.
