It rises near the New Hampshire border, north of Grafton Notch, and flows north through the Grafton Forest Wilderness Preserve to the Dead Cambridge River, a tributary of Umbagog Lake. The Androscoggin River flows from Umbagog to the tidal Kennebec River in Maine.
