Professional career
[edit]After going undrafted and un-signed following the 2023 NFL draft, Powell attended rookie minicamp with the Carolina Panthers, but was not signed to a contract.[4][5]
Hamilton Tiger-Cats
[edit]On May 17, 2023, Powell signed with the Hamilton Tiger-Cats.[1][6] He made the team's active roster as the third-string quarterback following 2023 training camp and dressed in his first professional game on June 9, 2023, against the Winnipeg Blue Bombers.[7] Following an injury to incumbent starter, Bo Levi Mitchell, in the second game of the season, Powell was elevated to the backup role behind Matthew Shiltz.[7] However, Shiltz also suffered an injury in the fifth game of the season and Powell was pressed into his first game action on July 13, 2023. On his first pass attempt, he threw a 17-yard touchdown pass to Tim White.[8] Powell finished the game having completed two of four passes for 47 yards and one touchdown.[8]
On July 17, 2023, head coach Orlondo Steinauer announced Powell as the starting quarterback for the game against the Toronto Argonauts on July 21, 2023.[9] In his first start, he completed 27 of 41 pass attempts for 282 yards and one interception in the loss to the Argonauts.[10] While Mitchell returned to start the next game, he was injured again and Powell started in the week after.[6] Despite Shiltz becoming healthy, Powell remained the starter through to week 15.[6] In week 16, Mitchell was healthy and returned to the roster, while Powell was moved to the injured list.[6]
Powell dressed in 15 regular season games and started in nine, recording a 4–5 record as a starter for a team that finished 8–10.[11] He threw for 2,283 yards, had a 67.8% completion rate, and threw for 10 touchdowns and nine interceptions.[11] Despite his impact during the regular season, Powell was a healthy scratch for the team's playoff loss that Shiltz started with Mitchell as backup and Kai Locksley as the short yardage quarterback.[12]
With one year remaining on his contract, Powell signed a contract extension through 2025 on May 12, 2024.[4] In 2024, under new head coach, Scott Milanovich, Mitchell was named the team's starter and Powell was named the team's primary backup following the departures of Shiltz and Locksley.[13] In the team's week 10 game against the Alouettes, Mitchell was hooked early after an interception and Powell was inserted into the game.[14] He then completed 30 of 38 pass attempts for 319 yards and two touchdowns in the loss to the Montreal Alouettes.[10][14] With the team holding a 2–7 record, Mitchell was demoted and Powell was named the starter for the team's week 11 game against the Edmonton Elks.[15] However, Powell was injured early in the game, leaving in an ambulance and later being diagnosed with a concussion.[15] He sat out two games with injury, but was again the back up behind Mitchell when he returned in week 15.[16]
In the 2025 season, Powell saw minimal playing time as the backup to a healthy Mitchell. Powell completed just six of eight passes for 47 yards that year.[10] He became a free agent upon the expiry of his contract on February 10, 2026.[17]
Edmonton Elks
[edit]The Edmonton Elks announced that they had signed Powell on February 11, 2026.[18]

Early life
Taylor Powell was born on October 21, 1998, in Fayetteville, Arkansas.[1] He is the son of Mark and Elizabeth Powell and has one younger sister, Kailey.[8] Powell grew up in Fayetteville, a community with a strong football tradition anchored by the University of Arkansas Razorbacks.[9] From a young age, he showed interest in the sport, idolizing local quarterback Chase Daniel, a former Razorback who played for the University of Missouri.[9]High school career
Taylor Powell attended Fayetteville High School in Fayetteville, Arkansas, where he played quarterback for the Bulldogs football team.[10] As a senior in 2016, Powell delivered an outstanding performance, completing 237 of 348 passes for 3,473 yards and 44 touchdowns, while also contributing seven rushing touchdowns.[11] His efficiency and dual-threat ability were instrumental in Fayetteville's offensive success that season.[12] Under Powell's leadership, the Bulldogs won back-to-back Arkansas Class 7A state championships in 2015 and 2016, with him earning recognition as the title game MVP in 2016 after throwing for 265 yards and four touchdowns in a 53-19 victory over North Little Rock.[11][13] Powell's high school exploits drew significant recruiting attention, as he was rated the No. 22 pocket passer quarterback prospect nationally by ESPN for the class of 2017.[10] Initially committed to Wake Forest, he flipped his pledge to the University of Missouri and signed with the Tigers in February 2017.[11]College career
University of Missouri
Taylor Powell arrived at the University of Missouri in 2017 as a three-star quarterback recruit from Fayetteville High School in Arkansas, where he was recognized as the state's Mr. Football after throwing for over 3,400 yards and 44 touchdowns in his senior season.[14] During his true freshman year, Powell appeared in three games but redshirted to preserve a year of eligibility, with no passing attempts while learning the Tigers' offensive system behind starter Drew Lock.[15] As a redshirt freshman in 2018, Powell remained the primary backup to Lock and saw limited action in six games, completing 6 of 14 passes for 134 yards with no touchdowns or interceptions.[16] In 2019, his redshirt sophomore season, Powell continued in a backup capacity behind new starter Kelly Bryant, appearing in six games including one start against Georgia on November 9 after Bryant suffered an injury. In that start, he went 10-for-22 for 84 yards, and for the season he completed 29 of 62 passes for 297 yards, one touchdown pass against Arkansas, and two interceptions.[4][17] After the 2019 campaign, Powell stayed with the program for his redshirt junior year in 2020 but opted to sit out the season amid COVID-19 concerns, ultimately entering the NCAA transfer portal on September 10, 2020, to pursue more substantial playing time elsewhere.[18]Troy University
After sitting out the 2020 season at the University of Missouri to preserve a year of eligibility amid COVID-19 extensions granted by the NCAA, Powell transferred to Troy University in December 2020.[19] His prior experience as a backup at Missouri helped prepare him for a more prominent role, and he won the starting quarterback competition over incumbent Gunnar Watson during training camp.[20] As a junior, Powell emerged as the Trojans' primary starter early in the 2021 campaign.[21] Powell started the first five games of the season, leading Troy to a 2–3 record in those contests while showcasing improved volume and efficiency compared to his limited opportunities at Missouri.[22] Over six appearances, he completed 125 of 189 passes for 1,251 yards, with seven touchdowns and six interceptions, achieving a 66.1% completion rate.[16] His performance included standout efforts, such as 311 yards and two touchdowns against Louisiana–Monroe on September 25.[22] Powell's season was cut short by a knee injury sustained during Troy's October 2 loss to South Carolina, causing him to miss the October 9 matchup against Georgia Southern.[23] He returned in a limited capacity for the November 6 "Battle for the Belt" game against South Alabama, completing 6 of 11 passes for 80 yards before Gunnar Watson retook the starting role.[22] This injury marked the transition from starter to backup for the remainder of Powell's time with the Trojans.[24]Eastern Michigan University
In January 2022, Powell transferred to Eastern Michigan University as a graduate student to join the Eagles football team after spending the previous season at Troy University.[25] During the 2022 season, Powell appeared in nine games for Eastern Michigan, starting all nine while completing 174 of 269 passes for 2,111 yards, 16 touchdowns, and eight interceptions.[16] His performance helped the Eagles achieve a 9-4 record, including a victory in the Famous Idaho Potato Bowl, where he was named Offensive MVP after throwing for 298 yards and two touchdowns in a 41-27 win over San Jose State.[26] On November 21, 2022, Powell earned Manning Award "Star of the Week" honors for his standout performance in a 31-24 road victory over Kent State on November 16, completing 30 of 39 passes for a career-high 315 yards and three touchdowns with no interceptions.[27] He was also named the E-Gridiron Group Offensive Newcomer of the Year. This game marked his second consecutive 1,000-yard passing season and highlighted his efficiency, ranking third in the Mid-American Conference with a 64.7% completion percentage.[26] Powell also received academic recognition, being named to the College Sports Communicators Academic All-District team for his performance both on the field and in the classroom.[28] Following the season, Powell declared for the 2023 NFL Draft, expressing hope to hear his name called among the league's prospects.[26]College statistics
Over his college career spanning the University of Missouri (2017–2019), Troy University (2021), and Eastern Michigan University (2022), Taylor Powell appeared in 30 games as a quarterback, completing 334 of 534 passes for 3,793 yards with 24 touchdowns and 16 interceptions, achieving a 62.5% completion rate and a 131.2 passer rating.[16] Powell's rushing contributions were limited, with 70 carries for -192 yards and 3 touchdowns across those 30 games.[16] The following table summarizes his year-by-year passing statistics, including games played (GP) and starts (GS) where documented from official team records and reliable databases.| Year | School | GP/GS | Cmp-Att | Pct | Yds | TD | Int | Rate |
