Terna Nande is an American former professional football linebacker known for his exceptional athletic prowess during his college career at Miami University and his brief stint in the National Football League with the Tennessee Titans. Born on June 17, 1983, in Grand Rapids, Michigan, Nande stood out as a versatile and explosive player despite his relatively light build for the position, earning recognition as the inaugural top-ranked "freak" athlete on Bruce Feldman's influential list of college football's most physically gifted players. Selected by the Tennessee Titans in the fifth round (137th overall) of the 2006 NFL Draft following his standout collegiate performance, Nande's professional career proved short-lived, lasting one season with limited on-field appearances and statistics. His time in the league highlighted the challenges of transitioning from dominant mid-major college production to the NFL's rigorous demands, after which he transitioned away from professional football.

College career

Miami RedHawks tenure

Terna Nande played linebacker for the Miami RedHawks of Miami University in the Mid-American Conference. He was a four-year contributor at the position, beginning his career as a true freshman and establishing himself as a starter early on. Nande started nine games during his freshman season, recording 49 tackles, five tackles for loss, and two sacks. His sophomore campaign stood out as one of the strongest for a Miami linebacker in recent memory, featuring 109 tackles, 20 tackles for loss, 5.5 sacks, and four interceptions. As a junior, he continued to produce despite drawing more attention from opponents, totaling 86 tackles, nine tackles for loss, and 3.5 sacks. His senior season was cut short after six games due to a lacerated liver injury, during which he accumulated 44 tackles, four tackles for loss, and two interceptions. Throughout his tenure, Nande was noted for his explosive playmaking ability, closing speed, fluid movement in coverage, and knack for making plays across the field as an outside linebacker.

Conference honors

Terna Nande received All-Mid-American Conference recognition for his play at outside linebacker with the Miami RedHawks. As a sophomore in 2003, he was named to the second-team All-MAC defense. He advanced to first-team All-MAC honors as a junior in 2004, reflecting his development and impact on the RedHawks' defense. These selections highlighted Nande among the conference's top defensive performers during his college career.

Professional football career

2006 NFL Draft and Tennessee Titans

Terna Nande was selected by the Tennessee Titans in the fifth round (137th overall) of the 2006 NFL Draft. As an outside linebacker from Miami University, he became the first RedHawk drafted that year and the first Miami linebacker taken in the NFL Draft since 1999. Nande wore jersey number 57 with the Titans. In the 2006 season, he appeared in one regular season game for the team, recording one solo tackle with no other defensive statistics. This marked his only regular-season appearance in the NFL.

Subsequent NFL practice squad stints

After his release from the Tennessee Titans in September 2007, Terna Nande was assigned to the Indianapolis Colts' practice squad on October 3, 2007. He was released by the Colts shortly thereafter on October 9, 2007. Nande then joined the San Diego Chargers, where he was assigned to their practice squad on November 21, 2007. He signed a reserve/future contract with the Chargers on January 23, 2008. The Chargers waived him on August 30, 2008. Nande did not appear in any regular season games or accumulate additional statistics during these stints, with his only NFL playing time remaining his one game with the Titans in 2006.

BC Lions in the CFL

Following his NFL practice squad stints and training camp appearances with teams including the Indianapolis Colts and San Diego Chargers, Terna Nande transitioned to the Canadian Football League by joining the BC Lions in 2008. On September 16, 2008, the BC Lions added him to their practice roster as an import linebacker, bringing his experience as a former fifth-round NFL draft pick from the Tennessee Titans. Nande remained with the BC Lions into the 2009 season, appearing on the roster and in a limited capacity on the field. Details of his on-field role and contributions during his time with the team are limited, with contemporary reports describing him as not an impact player who received only a meagre trial after the club initially showed interest in him the previous year. He was released by the BC Lions in September 2009.

Notable athletic feats

College strength and conditioning records

Terna Nande gained widespread recognition for his extraordinary strength and conditioning feats during his time at Miami University. In the summer of 2005, he was ranked No. 1 on Bruce Feldman's inaugural Freaks List, which highlighted the most exceptional athletes in college football, largely due to remarkable weight-room stories shared by Miami strength coach Dan Dalrymple. Dalrymple reported that Nande, at 235 pounds, bench pressed 520 pounds, then after a two-minute rest performed 315 pounds for 19 repetitions, before completing 30 repetitions at 225 pounds. Dalrymple also noted that Nande ran a 4.36-second 40-yard dash and squatted over 500 pounds as a true freshman. Nande became just the fourth Miami athlete to clear 500 pounds in the bench press. These accomplishments solidified his reputation as a standout in strength and conditioning among mid-major programs.

His performance included a vertical jump of 39.0 inches, a broad jump of 10 ft 4 in, a short shuttle time of 4.11 seconds, and a three-cone drill time of 6.97 seconds. Nande's most notable achievement came in the bench press, where he completed 41 repetitions of 225 lb, marking him as the first and only non-lineman—and the lightest player at 232 lb—to exceed 40 repetitions in Combine history. This bench press result built upon his established college strength reputation.
