Early life and education

Early background and education

Thomas Cailley was born on April 29, 1980, in Clermont-Ferrand, Puy-de-Dôme, France. He studied political science at Sciences Po Bordeaux. Following his university studies, he worked for three years in a company producing television documentaries. In 2007, he was admitted to La Fémis (École nationale supérieure des métiers de l'image et du son) in the screenwriting department. This training at La Fémis prepared him for his entry into filmmaking.

Career

Short films and early screenwriting

Thomas Cailley's early career in film focused on short-form projects and screenwriting, developed during and after his studies in the screenwriting department at La Fémis. His initial contributions included writing credits on several shorts, beginning with À domicile (2009), directed by Bojina Panayotova. In 2012, he wrote Le premier pas and served as co-writer on Zanta Clauz. His first short as director, writer, and composer was Paris Shanghai (2011), an absurd comedy following a man embarking on a 20,000-kilometer bike journey who encounters a teenager driving a stolen car. The film earned recognition at international festivals, winning Best Short Film at IndieLisboa and Best Film at Molodist. These early works established Cailley's interest in character-driven stories blending humor and unexpected encounters.

Directorial debut: Love at First Fight

Thomas Cailley's feature directorial debut came with Les Combattants (2014), internationally released as Love at First Fight, which he co-wrote with Claude Le Pape. The romantic comedy centers on Arnaud (Kévin Azaïs), a laid-back young carpenter whose quiet summer is disrupted when he meets Madeleine (Adèle Haenel), a fiercely determined woman obsessed with survivalist preparation for impending catastrophe; he impulsively joins her in an intense army-style training camp, leading to an unconventional love story blending humor and tension. The film premiered in the Directors' Fortnight section at the 2014 Cannes Film Festival. There, Les Combattants achieved a historic sweep by becoming the first film to win all three of the section's main prizes: the SACD Prize, the Art Cinema Award (CNC), and the Europa Cinemas Label. It also received the FIPRESCI Prize for best film in a Cannes parallel section. Jury comments emphasized the film's rarity as a well-scripted, well-acted feelgood arthouse picture with witty dialogue and a modern central relationship free of clichés, deserving wide European exposure. Critics praised Cailley's direction for its blend of polished Hollywood-style technique and restrained European storytelling, alongside the strong, charismatic performances by Haenel and Azaïs. The film's strong festival reception generated significant buzz in France, establishing Cailley as a promising new voice in French cinema.

Television directing and mid-career projects

Following his feature directorial debut in 2014, Thomas Cailley undertook several mid-career projects in screenwriting, music video direction, and television that bridged the gap to his second feature. He directed the music video for Louise Attaque's song "Anomalie" in 2015. Cailley also contributed screenplays to the television mini-series Trepalium (2016), where he provided the story and teleplay for two episodes, the feature film My Revolution (Ma Révolution, 2016), and the comedy (Girl)Friend (Ami-ami, 2018). His most prominent work during this time was the science fiction mini-series Ad Vitam (2018), which he co-created and co-wrote with Sébastien Mounier while directing all six episodes in collaboration with Manuel Schapira. Broadcast on ARTE, the series premiered in the French Competition at Séries Mania 2018.

Second feature: The Animal Kingdom

Thomas Cailley's second feature film as director is The Animal Kingdom (original title Le Règne animal), a science fantasy adventure drama that he co-wrote with Pauline Munier. The film had its world premiere as the opening night selection of the Un Certain Regard section at the 2023 Cannes Film Festival on May 17, 2023. It stars Romain Duris as François, Paul Kircher as his son Émile, Adèle Exarchopoulos as Julia, and Tom Mercier as Fix. Set in a near-future France, the story follows François and his 16-year-old son Émile as they navigate a world struck by a mysterious wave of mutations that gradually transform humans into hybrid animal creatures, with affected individuals institutionalized or hunted by authorities. After Émile's mother shows early signs of the condition, François embarks on a desperate quest that evolves into a transformative father-son journey. Cailley conceived the project as an ecological fable, portraying the mutation not merely as a disease but as a process that ultimately revitalizes a dying world, while exploring themes of identity, family bonds, and societal adaptation to radical change. Cailley developed the screenplay over several years, beginning with an early draft he encountered while serving on a screenwriting jury at La Fémis, and collaborated closely with Munier to refine it; he also worked with comic-book artist Frederik Peeters on creature designs and emphasized practical effects and real locations to ground the fantastical elements. He highlighted the film's focus on relatable characters amid a reversal of power dynamics in this new natural order. The film received warm reviews at Cannes and went on to earn critical acclaim, with an 83% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes based on 60 reviews. It was theatrically released in France on October 4, 2023, and achieved a worldwide box office gross of $9.1 million.
