Early clubs and first professional years

Thomas Meggle made his professional league debut on 27 July 1997 for FC St. Pauli in the 2. Bundesliga, starting in a match against SpVgg Greuther Fürth. In 1999, Meggle transferred to TSV 1860 Munich, but he did not feature in any first-team matches during the 1999–2000 season. During this period at Hansa Rostock, he made 38 league appearances and scored 1 goal. Over these five years, he featured in 75 league matches and scored 19 goals, contributing significantly during the club's time in the Regionalliga Nord and 2. Bundesliga. This return allowed him to build on his earlier stints at St. Pauli from 1997–1999 and 2000–2002. His retirement followed the conclusion of the 2009–10 campaign, marking the end of his playing career primarily associated with these two clubs in his later years.

Retirement

Thomas Meggle retired from professional football at the conclusion of the 2009–10 season with FC St. Pauli. The club's official history records his retirement from playing in the summer of 2010, as part of squad changes ahead of their return to the Bundesliga following promotion. Career databases confirm the exact retirement date as 1 July 2010, marking the end of his tenure with the club that dated back to his return in 2005. This closed his active playing career without further transitions noted in immediate retirement announcements.

Coaching career

Assistant and interim roles

After retiring from professional football, Thomas Meggle transitioned into coaching roles at FC St. Pauli. He served as assistant coach from July 2010 to September 2012 and again from October 2012 to June 2013, working under head coaches including Holger Stanislawski, André Schubert, and Michael Frontzeck. In September 2012, Meggle briefly assumed the role of interim head coach for the senior team from 26 September to 7 October 2012. Meggle returned to the senior team role in September 2014 when he was appointed head coach on 3 September, replacing Roland Vrabec following the latter's dismissal after a poor start to the 2014–15 season, which included only 4 points from the first four matches. At the time of his appointment, Meggle had been coaching the club's U23 team. His tenure as head coach lasted until 16 December 2014.

Reserve team head coach

Thomas Meggle served as head coach of FC St. Pauli II, the club's reserve team, from 1 July 2013 to 2 September 2014. The team competed in the Regionalliga Nord, the fourth tier of German football, throughout his tenure. No specific performance records, such as win-loss statistics or notable achievements, are detailed in primary sources covering this period.

Executive career

Sporting director at FC St. Pauli

On 16 December 2014, after serving as head coach since 3 September 2014, Thomas Meggle was appointed sporting director (Geschäftsleiter Sport) of FC St. Pauli, succeeding Rachid Azzouzi who was relieved of his duties. In this role, Meggle oversaw the club's sporting strategy and squad planning in the 2. Bundesliga. Meggle held the position until 1 November 2016, when FC St. Pauli announced his dismissal with immediate effect following differences in views on the club's strategic sporting direction. Club president Oke Göttlich acknowledged Meggle's contributions, crediting him with a significant role in securing the team's survival in the 2014/15 season and supporting the positive sporting progress during the 2015/16 campaign, while adding that Meggle would remain welcome at the Millerntor-Stadion. During his tenure, Meggle emphasized long-term squad development aimed at consistent mid-table finishes in the 2. Bundesliga, overseeing key contract extensions with players including Philipp Heerwagen, Lennart Sobiech, Philipp Ziereis, Robin Himmelmann, and Christopher Buchtmann, as well as notable signings such as Aziz Bouhaddouz and Serdar Sahin. He also reported structural advancements in the club's scouting system and youth academy. In a 2017 interview, Meggle reflected on his dismissal as a profound personal turning point, attributing it to the sport's tendency to seek accountability amid a difficult start to the 2016/17 season that saw the team struggle with injuries, suspensions, and inconsistent team structure.

Board role at Dunfermline Athletic

Thomas Meggle was appointed a member of the board of directors at Dunfermline Athletic on 1 September 2020, representing the German investment group DAFC Fußball GmbH. In July 2021, DAFC Fußball GmbH announced it was taking control of the club. As part of this role, he has served as a board director for Dunfermline Athletic FC and has been involved in the club's governance and strategic decisions. In addition to his board position, Meggle acted as sporting director for the club, contributing to key appointments and operational aspects during the German consortium's involvement. His tenure on the board continued until his resignation on 18 January 2025.

Film and television appearances

Appearances as himself

Thomas Meggle has appeared as himself in several football-related documentaries, videos, and television programs throughout his career. He first featured in the 2002 German documentary Irgendwo da unten – Ein Jahr 1. Liga, which chronicled the difficult 2001–2002 season of FC St. Pauli in the 1. Bundesliga and included portraits of players from the team. In 2012, Meggle appeared as himself in the video Rodeo. The following year, he was featured in the 2013 TV movie Trainer!. In 2014, Meggle made two appearances as himself in episodes of the television series Sportclub.

Acting credits

Thomas Meggle's acting career in scripted productions is extremely limited, consisting solely of one credited role in a short film. He portrayed Patient 4 in the 2013 German short Couchgeflüster – Das kriegen die zurück, directed by Guntmar Lasnig. This minor performance marks the entirety of his narrative acting credits, highlighting the peripheral nature of his involvement in scripted entertainment compared to his primary career in football. His more frequent on-screen appearances have instead been as himself in sports-related television and documentaries.
