Early life and education
Family background
Tiger Hu, born Hu Yanbin on July 4, 1983, in Shanghai, China, grew up in a modest family. His father, Hu Qiming, worked as a seaman for the Shanghai Shipping Company, often bringing home cassette tapes that sparked Hu's early interest in music. His mother, Dong Ruowei, was employed in a state-owned enterprise. As an only child, Hu was influenced by his parents' support for his artistic pursuits despite their ordinary circumstances.[5][4]Early career interests
Hu developed a passion for music from a young age, influenced by the tapes his father brought home. At age 13, he enrolled in a local performing arts school in Shanghai to study vocals and performance. By age 15, he formed his first band, serving as the lead singer, and at 16, he received a synthesizer as a birthday gift from his father, which led him to start composing his own music.[6][7] Hu later attended the Shanghai Conservatory of Music but did not graduate, a fact he publicly admitted in 2016, explaining it stemmed from insecurities about his talent. He balanced these early musical endeavors with his studies, setting a goal at age 15 to release an album by 18, which he achieved in 2002.[8]Breakthrough in entertainment
Tiger Hu, born Hu Yanbin, entered the entertainment industry in 1999 by participating in the Shanghai "Asian Music Festival" Newcomer Singer Competition, where he debuted as a performer. This early exposure led to his major breakthrough in 2002 with the release of his self-titled debut album on December 16 by Go East Entertainment Co. Ltd. The album, blending R&B and pop, achieved 4× platinum status in mainland China and Hong Kong, and earned him Best New Artist awards at four different Hong Kong Jade Solid Gold Hit Awards ceremonies, solidifying his position as a rising Mandopop talent.[1][6] The success of the debut album sparked a wave of R&B music in mainland China, with Hu composing most tracks and showcasing his skills as a singer-songwriter at age 19.Music career
Debut releases
Tiger Hu, then performing as Anson Hu, launched his music career in 2002 with his self-titled debut studio album released by Go East Entertainment Co. Ltd. This release established him in the Mandopop scene as a singer-songwriter and producer.[1] Early follow-ups included Wen Wu Shuang Quan (2002), an upgraded version in 2003, Music Mixture (2004), Music Code (2006), and The Men's Songs (Nan Ren Ge, 2007), blending pop, R&B, and self-produced tracks that highlighted his versatile style.[9]Later musical works
In 2012, Hu adopted the stage name Tiger Hu to better reflect his Chinese identity and released his eighth studio album One Size Bigger (Da Yi Hao GROW) under Warner Music Group, marking a shift toward more contemporary Mandopop with R&B influences.[1] Subsequent releases included Who Cares? (2011, pre-name change but transitional), cover album Tai Ge (2014), and EPs Tai Ge: Spring, Summer, Autumn, Winter (2014). In 2018, he issued Don't Be Too Good (覅忒好) and Ru Mu San Fen (入目三分), expanding into digital formats.[9][10] Into the 2020s, Hu focused on singles and project-based releases, such as the 2023 album It's a Firework (是一場煙火). As of November 2025, his discography comprises over 10 studio albums, numerous EPs, and singles, with ongoing work in production and education.[10]Acting career

He played a stay-at-home father in the comedy Oh My God (从天儿降), a story involving a magical smartphone that predicts the future.[13] Later that year, he portrayed Song Ming, a music producer, in the romantic drama Fall in Love Like a Star, which follows a singer's rise to fame and her relationship with a fan.[14] As of November 2025, Hu has not taken on additional scripted film roles, focusing primarily on his music career.Variety and hosting roles
Hu has been active in variety television, particularly in music-related reality shows. In 2018, he served as the composition instructor on Produce 101 China (创造101), mentoring contestants in songwriting for the girl group survival program. That same year, he appeared as a judge on Sound of My Dream 3 (梦想的声音 3). In 2019, Hu was the rap instructor on Produce Camp 2019 (创造营2019), guiding male trainees in hip-hop performance for the boy group formation show. His variety work continued into the 2020s, including judging roles on music competitions and appearances on shows like The Treasured Voice (2020), where he served as a musical partner. As of November 2025, recent appearances include See You Again Season 4 (2024) and Comedy King Stand-up Season 2 (2025), blending music performances with entertainment segments.[15]Personal life
2011 car accident and recovery
On December 30, 2011, Tiger Hu was involved in a car accident in Lanzhou, China, while en route to the airport.[16] The incident resulted in a lumbar vertebral fracture and dislocations, leading to him being bedridden for approximately 180 days.[17] Hu underwent treatment for his spinal injuries and took a hiatus from public activities to focus on recovery. In interviews, he has reflected on the accident as a period that tested his resilience and deepened his understanding of personal relationships in the industry. He gradually resumed his music career later in 2012.Marriage and family
Tiger Hu maintains a low profile regarding his personal life. He was in a relationship with actress Zheng Shuang from 2015 to 2016, which ended amid media attention.[4] As of November 2025, there are no public reports of marriage or children, and he has not disclosed further romantic involvements.Awards and recognition
