Tyler William Dippel[1] (born April 5, 2000) is an American former professional stock car racing driver. He last competed full-time in the NASCAR Gander Outdoors Truck Series in 2019, driving the No. 02 Chevrolet Silverado for Young's Motorsports.

Key Information

Racing career

[edit]

Early years

[edit]

In his childhood, Dippel started his racing career in go-karts at Oakland Valley Speedway.[2] He later raced big-block modifieds in New York at tracks like Orange County Fair Speedway, sometimes traveling to the southeastern United States.[3] He also raced dirt bikes and four-wheelers, leading to multiple injuries as a child.[4] As he advanced, he was a mainstay at the top of the PASS super late model tour standings until late season troubles in 2015.[5]

Developmental series

[edit]

Moving to stock cars in 2016, Dippel teamed with HScott Motorsports with Justin Marks for the NASCAR K&N Pro Series East season. He won his second-ever start in the series, at Mobile Speedway in Alabama.[6] In April, he was named to the NASCAR Next class for 2016 and 2017.[7]

After HScott closed at the end of 2016, a new team to the KNPSE signed Dippel for 2017 in Rette Jones Racing.[8] Dippel raced three races with ARCA Racing Series team Win-Tron Racing in 2017, at Toledo Speedway and the series' two dirt track races.[9][10] He failed to finish two but turned in a third-place showing at Illinois State Fairgrounds Racetrack.[11] In 2018, Dippel signed with Chad Bryant Racing and finished sixth with the team in his first race at Nashville Fairgrounds Speedway.[12]

Dippel on track at New Jersey Motorsports Park in 2018

In early February 2018, Dippel and RJR confirmed a second season together in the NASCAR K&N Pro Series East.[13] Dippel left the team after one race, citing a lack of performance, and joined MDM Motorsports for the second race on the schedule.[14] After that, Dippel joined DGR-Crosley for the remainder of the 2018 season.[15] He won his first race with the team, at Langley Speedway, after winning the pole. He and teammate Tyler Ankrum used tire strategy to their advantage, conserving them at the start to have the most speed at the end.[16] Before the season finale, it was announced that after deliberation within the team following the previous race, Dippel and the team would move in different directions.[17] The move came after Ankrum had voiced displeasure with Dippel's driving after the end of the New Hampshire race.[18] Dippel had also intentionally crashed Ankrum at the conclusion of the race at New Jersey Motorsports Park.[19] Team owner David Gilliland stated: "After much internal discussion following the race at New Hampshire, we agreed parting ways was the right decision for all parties involved. Tyler has been an integral part of our program this year and we thank him for his contribution to our growth and success. We wish him and his family nothing but the best going forward."[18]

Gander Outdoors Truck Series

[edit]

Parlaying off of his K&N efforts, Dippel made his NASCAR Camping World Truck Series debut at Eldora Speedway in 2018 with DGR-Crosley, driving the organization's No. 17 entry.[20] On September 26, 2018, it was announced that he would join GMS Racing's No. 25 entry for the four remaining races of 2018.[21] His best result on the year came at the Eldora race, finishing thirteenth.[22]

For 2019, Dippel was announced to take over the No. 02 truck at Young's Motorsports, replacing Austin Hill. His first career top-ten finish came at Texas Motor Speedway in April.[23] Dippel drew the ire of competitor Ben Rhodes at the Eldora Dirt Derby; Dippel failed an attempted slide job on Rhodes late in the race, pushing Rhodes into the fence and dropping him six spots behind Dippel. After the race, Dippel rammed into Rhodes on the cooldown lap, leading Rhodes to attempt to drag Dippel out of his truck on pit road after the race before being pulled away by NASCAR officials. Dippel later called out Rhodes in an expletive-laced tirade, calling it "cool" that Rhodes would miss the playoffs and implying that Rhodes was scared of fighting him. Rhodes, in a calmer postrace interview, called Dippel a dirty driver.[24]

On August 23, 2019, days before the Chevrolet Silverado 250 at Canadian Tire Motorsport Park, Dippel was indefinitely suspended by NASCAR for violating its conduct policy. At the time of his suspension, he was 13th in points with three top-ten finishes.[25] On the Monday after the suspension was announced, it was confirmed by NASCAR that the suspension stemmed from a traffic stop and subsequent arrest in New York when state troopers found drugs linked to Adderall in Dippel's vehicle.[26] The charges were dropped the following week and he was reinstated, however, he lost his ride at the conclusion of the 2019 season and has not raced since.[27]

Personal life

[edit]

In March 2019, Dippel was arrested on account of reckless driving during the Martinsville Speedway race weekend, later pleading guilty to improper driving. In summer 2019, Dippel was ejected from a casino near Pocono Raceway for having a fake identification card.[28] In August 2019, Dippel was charged with criminal possession of a controlled substance in New York after state troopers found amphetamines in his car.[26] The charges were eventually dropped after the amphetamines in the car were found to have belonged to a friend who claimed responsibility to leaving it in the car.[27]

Tyler William Dippel (born April 5, 2000) is an American former professional stock car racing driver. He is best known for his participation in the NASCAR Gander RV & Outdoors Truck Series (now known as the NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series), where he competed full-time during the 2019 season. A native of Wallkill, New York, the 19-year-old Dippel drove the No. 02 Chevrolet Silverado for Young's Motorsports in 2019. In 22 starts that year, he achieved one top-five finish and three top-10 finishes while ranking 13th in the final points standings. His season was briefly interrupted by an indefinite suspension from NASCAR in late August 2019 following a traffic stop on Route 17 in Wallkill, during which he was charged with misdemeanor criminal possession of a controlled substance after amphetamine and dextroamphetamine pills were found in his vehicle. The charge was later reduced in court, where Dippel pleaded guilty to the traffic infraction of moving from a lane unsafely, leading to his immediate reinstatement by NASCAR and clearance to return for the September 13 race at Las Vegas Motor Speedway. Dippel began his racing career in local and regional short-track events before advancing to national developmental series, culminating in his NASCAR Truck Series opportunity. He has since returned to competing in Northeast short-track racing events and has not competed in NASCAR national series since the end of 2019.

Early Life

Birth and background

Tyler Dippel was born on April 5, 2000, in Wallkill, New York. He is an American national. His hometown is listed as Wallkill, New York. Dippel comes from a racing-oriented family; his father Todd raced motocross at the professional level for 15 years, his mother Jill raced dirt bikes, and both grandfathers (Harry Dippel and Bill Lampreau) previously raced cars.

Entry into motorsports

Tyler Dippel began his involvement in motorsports at age seven, initially racing motorcycles before suffering a broken collarbone that prompted a switch to safer alternatives. He transitioned to go-karts and slingshots, where he quickly demonstrated talent and enjoyed success that fueled his progression in the sport. By age ten, Dippel advanced to asphalt racing in Legends cars, building on his early experiences. He later competed in big-block modifieds across New York and the southeastern United States, achieving his first victory in the division at Georgetown Speedway in August 2015. He also entered super late model competition on the PASS tour, racing as a rookie in the PASS South Super Late Model series and earning a notable third-place finish at Hickory Motor Speedway after leading much of the event. He transitioned to stock car racing in 2016.

Racing Career

Pre-NASCAR racing

Tyler Dippel competed in select stock car series prior to his full-time NASCAR involvement. In 2015, he ran in the Pro All Stars Series (PASS) Super Late Models, showing strong early season performance as a 15-year-old rookie. He notably finished third in a PASS South Super Late Model race at Hickory Motor Speedway, leading much of the event before securing the podium against more experienced competition and earning praise from NASCAR veteran Jeff Burton, who remarked that "Rookies don’t do that here." Dippel also made limited appearances in the ARCA Racing Series, starting with his debut in 2015 and returning for additional starts in 2017 through 2019. Across eight career ARCA starts, he recorded two top-five finishes and three top-ten finishes. His best result came in 2017 with a third-place finish at the Illinois State Fairgrounds. In his 2015 series debut at the same Illinois State Fairgrounds track, he ran competitively before late-race misfortune dropped him to a 12th-place finish. He additionally made one start in the CARS Late Model Stock Car Tour in 2015. These early stock car experiences helped build his resume on asphalt ahead of his transition to more prominent NASCAR-sanctioned competition.

NASCAR K&N Pro Series East

Tyler Dippel competed in the NASCAR K&N Pro Series East from 2016 to 2018, recording notable achievements during his participation in the developmental series. In his rookie year of 2016, he earned his first series victory in just his second career start, winning the Mobile 150 at Mobile International Speedway by leading the final 120 laps of the 150-lap event in dominant fashion for HScott Motorsports with Justin Marks. He went on to finish third in the final championship standings that season with 475 points across 14 starts, including one win, one top-five finish, and eight top-ten finishes. In 2018, Dippel secured his second K&N Pro Series East win at Langley Speedway in the Visit Hampton VA 150, where he also captured the pole position and completed a weekend sweep with his victory on April 28. He achieved his best career result in the series that year, finishing second in the final points standings with 490 points over 13 starts, tallying one win, six top-five finishes, and nine top-ten finishes.

NASCAR Truck Series

Tyler Dippel began competing in the NASCAR Camping World Truck Series in 2018 following his prior success in the NASCAR K&N Pro Series East. His series debut occurred at the Eldora Dirt Derby on July 18, 2018, where he drove the No. 17 Toyota for DGR-Crosley and finished 13th. Later that year, he transitioned to GMS Racing's No. 25 Chevrolet for the final four races of the season. In 2019, Dippel ran full-time with Young's Motorsports in the No. 02 Chevrolet. He secured his first top-10 finish with an 8th-place result at Texas Motor Speedway and achieved a career-best 3rd-place finish at Michigan International Speedway in the Corrigan Oil 200. Across the 2019 season, he recorded three top-10 finishes overall, including one top-5. Over his two seasons in the Truck Series from 2018 to 2019, Dippel started a total of 22 races, accumulating zero wins, three top-10 finishes, one top-5 finish, and zero poles. He posted an average finish of 16.8 across his career in the series. His highest championship standing was 13th in points during the 2019 season. Dippel's final Truck Series appearance was the Ford EcoBoost 200 at Homestead-Miami Speedway on November 15, 2019.

Controversies

On-track incidents

During his NASCAR career, Tyler Dippel was involved in on-track incidents that drew attention. In the 2018 NASCAR K&N Pro Series East season, while teammates at DGR-Crosley, Dippel and Tyler Ankrum experienced ongoing tension amid their championship battle. At New Jersey Motorsports Park, with Ankrum running second and Dippel third approaching Turn 11, Dippel went into the grass before spinning Ankrum out, wrecking both drivers. Ankrum later described the contact as blatant in his view. On August 1, 2019, during the NASCAR Gander Outdoors Truck Series race at Eldora Speedway, Dippel made contact with Ben Rhodes after the final restart in a green-white-checkered finish. Dippel slid into Rhodes coming off Turn 2, sending Rhodes into the outside fence, after which the drivers traded paint and sheet metal on the cool-down lap. Following the race, Rhodes ran toward Dippel's truck, reached into the cockpit, and was separated from Dippel by a NASCAR official and crew members. Dippel commented that the contact occurred because "it was green-white-checkered, it was time to go," while criticizing Rhodes' demeanor. Rhodes attributed the issue to a lack of respect among multiple drivers that night, stating that aggressive moves had built up over time and affected his playoff chances.

2019 arrest and suspension

On August 18, 2019, Tyler Dippel was arrested in Wallkill, New York, after a traffic stop for driving more than 80 mph in a 65 mph zone, during which he and a passenger gave conflicting accounts of their travel. Following consent to search the vehicle, state troopers discovered a pill bottle containing amphetamine and dextroamphetamine—prescription medications commonly associated with Adderall—in a backpack inside the truck; the prescription belonged to another individual who was not present. Dippel was charged with criminal possession of a controlled substance in the seventh degree, a class A misdemeanor. On August 23, 2019, NASCAR indefinitely suspended Dippel from competition, citing a violation of Section 12.1 of the NASCAR Rule Book and the Member Conduct Guidelines for actions detrimental to stock car racing. The suspension came shortly after the arrest and prevented him from competing in the upcoming Chevrolet Silverado 250 at Canadian Tire Motorsport Park. In a public statement on August 28, 2019, Dippel explained that the medication had been left in his truck by a friend and that he had immediately notified NASCAR upon receiving the citation; he also reported passing a blood test confirming no drugs were in his system. That same day, the criminal possession charge was dismissed at Wallkill Town Court after the friend provided proof of the prescription and accepted responsibility for leaving the medication in the vehicle, with Dippel pleading guilty to a related traffic infraction. NASCAR reinstated Dippel effective immediately following the resolution. Dippel returned to the No. 02 Chevrolet for Young's Motorsports in several remaining events of the 2019 NASCAR Gander Outdoors Truck Series season, including the September 13 race at Las Vegas Motor Speedway.

Retirement

End of NASCAR involvement

Dippel's NASCAR involvement concluded with the 2019 NASCAR Gander Outdoors Truck Series season, during which he drove the No. 02 Chevrolet Silverado full-time for Young's Motorsports. His final start came in the season-ending Ford EcoBoost 200 at Homestead-Miami Speedway on November 15, 2019, where he qualified 15th and finished 18th after completing 133 of 134 laps. In his 22 starts that year with the team, Dippel accumulated 454 points to finish 13th in the championship standings. He did not compete in any subsequent NASCAR national series events following the conclusion of the 2019 season.

Northeast short-track racing

Tyler Dippel has not competed in professional stock car racing since completing the 2019 NASCAR Gander Outdoors Truck Series season in November. He stepped away from NASCAR's national series and has since focused on dirt modified racing in regional events across the Northeast. Dippel has been active in the Short Track Super Series Modified division, making starts in prominent events such as the Fonda 200 at Fonda Speedway. In 2024, he qualified on pole and led early in the Fonda 200 before encountering issues during the race. He also recorded a second-place finish in a 2025 Eastern States weekend event at Orange County Fair Speedway after employing strong strategy from a deep starting position.
