Announcement
Starship Entertainment announced Wave, IVE's first Japanese-language extended play, on April 1, 2023, through the group's official Japanese social media accounts and a press release, scheduling its release for May 31, 2023.[7] The EP marked IVE's inaugural full Japanese production, designed to deepen the group's foothold in the Japanese market after prior successful singles like Japanese versions of "Eleven" and "Love Dive."[7] A coming-soon teaser image accompanied the announcement, depicting the group in a unified visual setup, while individual and group concept photos followed on April 24 and 25, building early hype with sleek, modern aesthetics.[8] Media outlets highlighted the strategic focus on original Japanese content, including the title track "Wave," as a bold move for international growth, with fans voicing enthusiasm online for IVE's evolving J-pop integration.[9]Development
The development of Wave, IVE's debut Japanese EP, was a collaborative effort between Starship Entertainment and Ariola Japan, a subsidiary of Sony Music Entertainment Japan, which provided distribution and production input tailored to the Japanese market. This partnership facilitated the EP's release through Sony Music Labels Inc., ensuring seamless integration of local production elements while maintaining Starship's creative oversight.[10] The EP adapts three of IVE's prior Korean hits—"After LIKE," "LOVE DIVE," and "Take It"—into Japanese versions with localized lyrics to resonate with Japanese listeners, while introducing two original tracks composed by a blend of Japanese and Korean talents. The title track "Wave" features Japanese lyrics by HIROMI and music composed by Korean producer Ryan S. Jhun alongside Gustav Landell, Simon Jonasson, Kristin Carpenter, PATEKO, and Stally.[11][12] Similarly, "Classic" includes Japanese lyrics by Kanata Okajima and music composed by Ryan S. Jhun, Chloe Anne Latimer, Nina Nesbitt, Celine Svanbäck, and Jeppe London Bilsby.[13] Recording for the EP was completed by early May 2023 to align with the title track's digital rollout.[10]Music and lyrics
Style and genre
Wave is classified primarily as J-pop with strong K-pop influences, incorporating elements of dance-pop, house, and electronic pop.[14] The EP spans a total runtime of 15 minutes and 49 seconds across five tracks, all performed in Japanese to cater to the local market.[15] The production blends IVE's signature confident pop sound with Japanese idol-inspired features, such as sharp, repetitive hooks and harmonious vocal layers that emphasize group synergy.[16] Upbeat electronic beats drive the overall aesthetic, supported by groovy percussion and subtle synth elements that create an energetic, runway-like stomp.[16] The title track "Wave" exemplifies this with its bass-heavy house production, punctuated by whip-crack effects and Neptunes-style guitar strums, though it includes a trap breakdown with distorted vocals.[16] In contrast, the b-side "Classic" adopts a more subdued dance-pop groove, maintaining the EP's cohesive pop foundation while varying the intensity.[9] This mix of electronic and pop components underscores the project's adaptation of K-pop polish to J-pop accessibility.Themes and song descriptions
The EP Wave centers on themes of confidence and self-empowerment in romantic pursuits and personal identity, presenting love as an exhilarating, inevitable force that encourages boldness and authenticity.[11] These narratives resonate with IVE's established persona of assertive femininity, adapted for a Japanese audience through lyrics that blend universal emotional highs with culturally attuned expressions of desire and certainty.[9] The title track "Wave" uses the ocean wave as a metaphor for the unpredictable yet thrilling ups and downs of falling in love, portraying a protagonist who confidently draws in a hesitant partner while rejecting ambiguity in favor of honest emotional connection.[17] Lyrics like "I see you're falling deep for me / Baby, yes, I'm all you'll need" emphasize mutual destiny and the joy of riding this romantic surge together, fostering a sense of empowerment through clarity and passion.[18] "Classic," the second original track, evokes a nostalgic yet revolutionary vision of timeless romance, where the singers embrace their unique "chemistry" to create an enduring, cinematic love story that defies conventional expectations.[19] The narrative celebrates individuality with lines such as "I'm a new age classic" and urges risk-taking in relationships, framing love as a bold, personal revolution that leads to a "happy ever after" rooted in self-assured identity.[20] The Japanese version of "After LIKE" faithfully translates the original's theme of magnetic attraction post-initial infatuation, maintaining the vibe of playful confidence as the protagonist navigates escalating desire with unapologetic charm. Subtle phrasing adjustments, such as rhythmic adaptations in the chorus, ensure it aligns with Japanese pop's melodic flow while preserving the bold narrative of seizing romantic tension.[9] In the Japanese rendition of "LOVE DIVE," the core empowerment of diving headfirst into love—without hesitation or regret—is upheld through direct translations that highlight self-assured pursuit and the thrill of vulnerability turned strength. The lyrics retain the original's energetic call to embrace passion fully, with minor cultural tweaks in wording to evoke a sense of liberated intimacy familiar to Japanese listeners.[9] "Take It" (Japanese version) carries forward the theme of opportunistic boldness in romance, encouraging listeners to claim moments of connection with unwavering self-empowerment, as the natural cadence of the translated lyrics enhances its rhythmic assurance. This adaptation keeps the narrative of proactive identity in love intact, resonating through phrasing that feels intuitively suited to Japanese expression.[9]Promotion and release
Marketing and editions
The EP was released in multiple physical formats by Ariola Japan, including four primary editions: Initial Limited Edition A (CD + Blu-ray disc featuring the music video and behind-the-scenes footage), Initial Limited Edition B (CD + DVD with similar video content), Initial Limited Edition C (CD + 7-inch square photobook), and the Regular Edition (CD only with a 12-page booklet).[21] Additionally, six member-specific Full Production Limited DIVE Editions were produced, each dedicated to one of IVE's members—An Yujin, Gaeul, Rei, Jang Wonyoung, Liz, and Leeseo—with unique artwork and packaging tailored to the individual, bringing the total to ten physical versions. These editions incorporated trading cards in three variants (I, II, III) and first-press bonuses such as mini photos or stickers, depending on the retailer.[21] The digital version of Wave became available for streaming and download on May 31, 2023, across major platforms including Apple Music, Spotify, LINE MUSIC, Amazon Music, and YouTube Music.[21] Pre-order incentives for physical copies included exclusive photocards, random trading cards, and store-specific bonuses like acrylic stands or storage boxes for bulk purchases; a LINE MUSIC replay campaign offered signed polaroids (cheki) to fans achieving over 700 plays of the title track.[21] Marketing for Wave emphasized a sporty girl crush aesthetic, featuring tennis court motifs in promotional posters and concept photos unveiled starting April 1, 2023.[22] Social media teasers began in early April on official channels, progressively revealing tracklist details, concept images, and scheduler graphics to build anticipation ahead of the May 31 release.[21] To engage Japanese fans, the campaign tied in with purchase-limited events, including in-person handshake sessions on June 10 at Makuhari Messe and June 11 at INTEX Osaka, plus an online event on July 19, accessible via serial numbers from physical albums.[21]Singles and music videos
The lead single "Wave" was released digitally on May 9, 2023, ahead of the EP's full release, serving as IVE's debut Japanese original track.[23] The accompanying music video, produced for the Japanese market, showcases the group in dynamic settings including energetic squash court sequences, elegant poolside relaxation, and rock star-inspired performance scenes, highlighting their versatility and charisma.[24][25] The video's choreography, created by the dance crew LACHICA, features synchronized group formations with fluid, rhythmic movements that complement the song's upbeat pop style and thematic energy.[26] No additional singles were released from the EP, though Japanese versions of existing tracks like "LOVE DIVE" received promotion through live group performances on Japanese television programs. IVE performed the title track "WAVE" on Music Station on May 26, 2023.[27] These adaptations incorporated tailored dance elements, such as enhanced wave-like arm and body isolations, to suit broadcast formats and engage local audiences.[26]Commercial performance

Upon its release on May 31, 2023, Wave achieved significant commercial success in Japan, selling 92,165 physical copies during its first week according to Oricon data, marking the EP's debut at number one on the weekly album ranking.[4] Physical CD sales dominated the performance, accounting for the bulk of the 93,976 combined units, which incorporated 496 digital download points and 1,315 streaming equivalent units.[6] By early June 2023, the EP had shipped over 100,000 units, earning a gold certification from the Recording Industry Association of Japan (RIAJ).[28] This debut outperformed IVE's prior Japanese release, I've IVE, which accumulated 50,041 units in total sales, establishing Wave as the group's strongest market entry to date.[29] As of the latest available data, Wave has sold 152,922 physical copies on Oricon.[30]Charts
Wave achieved strong chart performance primarily in Japan, reflecting its targeted release as IVE's first Japanese EP. It debuted at number one on the Oricon Weekly Albums Chart for the issue dated June 12, 2023, maintaining the top spot for one week.[31][32] The EP also secured the number three position on the Oricon Monthly Albums Chart for June 2023.[30] On the Oricon Year-End Albums Chart for 2023, Wave ranked at number 39, with total physical sales contributing to its placement.[33] Similarly, Wave topped the Billboard Japan Hot Albums chart upon release in June 2023.[34] It finished the year at number 34 on the Billboard Japan Hot Albums Year-End chart.[35] The release exhibited notable longevity on Japanese charts, remaining within the top 100 of the Oricon Weekly Albums Chart for over 20 weeks and charting for 91 weeks in total as of the latest available data.[30] This sustained presence underscored the EP's enduring popularity in the market, bolstered by strong initial sales.[36]| Chart (2023) | Peak Position | Source |

Certifications
Wave earned a gold certification from the Recording Industry Association of Japan (RIAJ) on June 9, 2023, recognizing over 100,000 units of physical shipments as tracked by Oricon.[28] This accolade reflects the EP's strong initial performance in the Japanese market shortly after its release. As a Japan-exclusive physical release, Wave is ineligible for certifications from the Korea Music Content Association (KMCA), which awards based on sales within South Korea.[37] While RIAJ offers certifications for equivalent units incorporating streaming and digital downloads, no such awards have been granted to Wave as of November 2025. The gold certification highlighted IVE's successful entry into Japan's music industry, enhancing their discography's standing and paving the way for subsequent releases like their platinum-certified follow-up EP Alive.[38]Production credits
