The Royal London One-Day Cup 2022 was the premier limited-overs domestic cricket competition in England and Wales, featuring the 18 first-class county teams in a 50-over format from 2 August to 17 September 2022, with Kent defeating Lancashire by 21 runs in the final to win their first major limited-overs title since 1978.[1][2][3] The tournament followed a group-stage structure, dividing the teams into two groups of nine, where each side played eight fixtures against intra-group opponents to determine qualification for the knockout phase.[4] The top four teams from each group advanced to the quarter-finals, with subsequent semi-finals and the decisive final held at Trent Bridge in Nottingham.[2] Glamorgan entered as defending champions after their 58-run victory over Durham in the 2021 final, marking their first One-Day Cup title.[5][6] A total of 77 matches were played across various county grounds, providing vital preparation for players amid the concurrent schedule with The Hundred.[1][5] In the final, Kent batted first and compiled 306/6 in their 50 overs, led by Joey Evison's unbeaten 97 and Joe Denly's 78, before Evison claimed 2/34 with the ball to help bowl out Lancashire for 285 in 48.4 overs, earning him the player-of-the-match award.[2] Lancashire's chase was anchored by half-centuries from Keaton Jennings (72) and Steven Croft (72), but they fell short despite a late surge.[2] The competition showcased high-scoring encounters, including Hampshire's tournament-high 396/5 against Kent—featuring centuries from James Vince (116) and Joe Weatherley (102)—which secured a 163-run victory.[7] Middlesex's Stephen Eskinazi topped the run charts with 658 runs at an average of 94.00 across eight innings, while India's Cheteshwar Pujara amassed 624 runs for Sussex, highlighting international contributions to the domestic fray.[8]

Background and Format

Overview

The 2022 Royal London One-Day Cup was the eighth edition of the Royal London One-Day Cup, serving as the premier 50-over List A domestic cricket competition for counties in England and Wales.[4] Organized by the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) and sponsored by Royal London, it formed a key part of the 2022 English domestic cricket season.[9] The tournament ran from 2 August to 17 September 2022, marking a return to the traditional 50-over format after COVID-19-related disruptions, including the outright cancellation of the competition in 2020.[5][10] Featuring all 18 first-class counties divided into two groups, the event comprised 77 matches in total.[11] It provided a platform for competitive one-day cricket amid the concurrent scheduling of The Hundred, allowing counties to field strengthened squads where possible despite player overlaps. Many teams appointed stand-in captains due to player commitments to The Hundred.[5] The structure included a group stage followed by a knockout phase to determine the champion.[9] Kent secured their first title in the competition's history by defeating Lancashire by 21 runs in the final at Trent Bridge, Nottingham, ending a long drought in one-day knockout finals for the county.[2][12] This victory highlighted the tournament's role in fostering domestic talent and providing meaningful competition in the post-pandemic recovery of English cricket.[13]

Format

The 2022 Royal London One-Day Cup featured a group stage followed by a knockout phase, involving all 18 first-class counties divided into two groups of nine teams each.[9] In the group stage, each team participated in a single round-robin format, playing every other team in its group once for a total of eight matches—four at home and four away—resulting in 36 matches per group.[9][5] Points were awarded as follows: two points for a win, one point each for a tie or no result, and zero points for a loss.[14] In case of tied points, teams were ranked by net run rate (NRR), followed by head-to-head results, then bowling strike rate, and finally by lot if necessary.[14] The top three teams from each group advanced to the knockout stage.[5] The group winners qualified directly for the semi-finals with home advantage, while the second- and third-placed teams from each group proceeded to quarter-final play-offs, where the second-placed team hosted the third-placed team from the opposing group.[9][5] The play-off winners then faced the group winners in the semi-finals, with seeding arranged such that the winner of Group A played the play-off victor from Group B's second versus Group A's third, and vice versa.[5] All matches were 50 overs per side and held List A status under International Cricket Council regulations.[14] For rain-affected games, the Duckworth-Lewis-Stern method was used to revise targets, with a minimum of 10 overs required per innings in the group stage and 20 overs in knockouts to constitute a completed match.[14] In knockouts, ties were resolved via a Super Over.[14] The knockout stage consisted of quarter-finals (play-offs), semi-finals, and a final, all in a single-elimination format, with the final scheduled at Trent Bridge.[9]

Participating Teams

The 2022 Royal London One-Day Cup featured all 18 first-class counties from England and Wales, divided into two groups of nine teams each to facilitate the group stage round-robin format.[4][15] Group A included Durham, Gloucestershire, Leicestershire, Middlesex, Nottinghamshire, Somerset, Surrey, Sussex, and Warwickshire, while Group B comprised Derbyshire, Essex, Glamorgan, Hampshire, Kent, Lancashire, Northamptonshire, Worcestershire, and Yorkshire.[16][17] Squads for the competition were permitted to include overseas players, with each team limited to fielding a maximum of two overseas-registered players per match following ECB regulations introduced in 2021.[18][19]

Group A Teams

  • Durham: Based at the Riverside Ground in Chester-le-Street, Durham entered as the 2021 runners-up and were led by captain Scott Borthwick.[20][21]

Group Stage Standings

Group A

In Group A of the 2022 Royal London One-Day Cup, nine teams competed in a round-robin format, with each side playing eight matches. A win earned 2 points, while a tie or no result awarded 1 point to each team involved; losses yielded 0 points. Positions were decided first by total points, followed by net run rate (NRR) as the primary tiebreaker when points were level.[5][32] The final points table for Group A is presented below. Note that Durham had 2 points deducted due to exceeding five disciplinary breaches within a 12-month period, resulting in 0 points despite one win.[17]

Source: ESPNcricinfo.[17] Net run rate serves as a tiebreaker by measuring the difference between a team's overall scoring rate and conceding rate across the group stage: NRR = (total runs scored / total overs faced) - (total runs conceded / total overs bowled). This metric favors teams with dominant performances in run differentials, as seen when Sussex topped the table over Leicestershire—both on 12 points—due to their superior NRR of +1.929 compared to +0.039.[32] The top four teams from Group ASussex, Leicestershire, Nottinghamshire, and Middlesex—qualified for the quarter-finals, joining the top four from Group B in the knockout stage.[5][33]

Group B

In Group B of the 2022 Royal London One-Day Cup, nine teams competed in a round-robin format, with each side playing eight matches. Points were awarded as follows: two for a win, one for a tie or no result, and zero for a loss. Hampshire topped the table with seven wins from eight matches, securing 14 points and qualification for the knockout stage.[34] The final standings for Group B are presented below:

Net run rate (NRR) served as the primary tiebreaker for teams on equal points, calculated by subtracting the average run rate conceded from the average run rate scored across all matches, with adjustments for incomplete innings to ensure fairness in rain-affected games.[34] For instance, the no-result match awarded Lancashire one point, contributing to their second-place finish ahead of Kent despite a lower win tally. Derbyshire's points were reduced by two due to a bat-gauge violation penalty, dropping them to seventh despite three wins and one no result.[34] The top four teams—Hampshire, Lancashire, Kent, and Glamorgan—advanced to the quarter-finals, joining the qualifiers from Group A to contest the knockout stage.[34]

Knockout Stage

Quarter-Finals

The quarter-finals of the 2022 Royal London One-Day Cup featured two matches on 26 August, pitting the second- and third-placed teams from each group against cross-group opponents, while the group winners advanced directly to the semi-finals.[4] In the first quarter-final at Stanley Park, Blackpool, second-placed Group B side Lancashire faced third-placed Group A team Nottinghamshire. Nottinghamshire posted 338/8 in 50 overs, powered by Ben Slater's century (104 off 122 balls) and Joe Clarke's brisk 78 off 56 balls, setting a formidable target. Lancashire responded with a thrilling chase, reaching 341/7 in 48.3 overs to win by three wickets with nine balls remaining, thanks to Steven Croft's unbeaten 115 off 105 balls, which anchored the innings after early setbacks.[35][17] The second quarter-final took place at Grace Road, Leicester, where third-placed Group B team Kent took on second-placed Group A outfit Leicestershire. Kent batted first and compiled 325/8 in 50 overs, led by Joe Denly's 65 off 51 balls, Ben Compton's 62 off 56 balls, and Joey Evison's 56 off 80 balls, providing a solid platform. Leicestershire managed only 244 in 42.4 overs in reply, falling short by 81 runs as Kent's bowlers, spearheaded by Grant Stewart's 4/42, dismantled their middle order in a late collapse from 214/5.[36][17] These victories propelled Lancashire and Kent into the semi-finals alongside the group toppers.[4]

Semi-Finals

The semi-finals of the 2022 Royal London One-Day Cup took place on 30 August 2022, featuring the group stage winners and the quarter-final winners in a knockout format to determine the finalists.[4] In the first semi-final at The Rose Bowl in Southampton, Hampshire, the Group B leaders, posted 310/9 in 50 overs after winning the toss and batting first, with Nick Gubbins top-scoring on 75 off 84 balls, supported by half-centuries from Aneurin Donald (54 off 50) and James Organ (54 off 55).[37] Kent, runners-up from Group B, chased the target in a thrilling encounter, reaching 313/7 in 49 overs to win by three wickets with six balls remaining. Ollie Robinson's 95 off 89 balls and Harry Finch's 52 off 60 balls laid a solid foundation, but the match turned dramatic when Kent slumped to 249/7 still needing 62 off the last eight overs; veteran Darren Stevens then anchored the chase with an unbeaten 84 off 65 balls, including crucial boundaries in the final overs, to guide his side home. Joe Denly contributed significantly with the ball, taking 2/53 in 10 overs for Kent.[38][39] The second semi-final at the County Ground in Hove saw Group A winners Sussex face Lancashire, who had advanced as quarter-final victors. Lancashire, electing to bat, recovered from an early collapse of 62/3 to post 319/8 in 50 overs, powered by Dane Vilas' match-winning 121 off 99 balls—his first List A century—along with fifties from George Lavelle (50 off 58) and Danny Lamb (57* off 48). Sussex started strongly in pursuit but faltered against Lancashire's disciplined bowling, managing 254 all out in 46.3 overs to lose by 65 runs, with Tom Haines (49 off 59) and Ali Orr (71 off 75) providing resistance before Liam Hurt's 3/43 in 10 overs sealed the collapse.[40][41] Kent and Lancashire advanced to the final, setting up a clash between the Group B runners-up and the quarter-final qualifiers from Group A.[4]

Final

The final of the 2022 Royal London One-Day Cup was contested between Kent and Lancashire on 17 September 2022 at Trent Bridge, Nottingham. Kent won the toss and elected to bat first, posting a total of 306 for 6 in their 50 overs. Lancashire, in reply, were bowled out for 285 in 48.4 overs, falling short by 21 runs.[2] Kent's innings began disastrously with Ben Compton dismissed for a duck off the fourth ball of the match, bowled by Tom Bailey. However, Joey Evison and Ollie Robinson mounted a recovery with a second-wicket stand of 79 in 16.3 overs, Evison reaching 97 from 111 balls before being bowled by Danny Lamb. Joe Denly then anchored the middle order with 78 from 69 balls, forming a crucial 133-run third-wicket partnership with Evison that propelled Kent to 212 for 3. Alex Blake contributed a quick 38 from 32 balls lower down, helping Kent reach a challenging total despite Lancashire's bowlers, led by Bailey and Liam Hurt with 2 wickets each, keeping things tight.[2][42] In their chase, Lancashire made a solid start, reaching 126 for 3 after 21.3 overs, powered by half-centuries from Keaton Jennings (72 from 62 balls) and Steven Croft (72 from 83 balls). However, the required run rate climbed, and Kent's bowlers struck decisively in the latter stages. Grant Stewart and Nathan Gilchrist claimed three wickets apiece, while Evison added 2 for 34 in a fine all-round display. Lancashire suffered a late collapse, losing their last five wickets for just 73 runs after being well-placed at 212 for 5, with the final wicket falling when Will Williams was run out. Evison was named player of the match for his match-winning contributions with bat and ball.[2][42] The victory marked Kent's first List A title since their triumph in the 1978 Gillette Cup, ending a long drought in 50-over cricket and providing a fitting farewell for veteran all-rounder Darren Stevens in his final professional match. Over 9,000 spectators attended the match under clear conditions, witnessing a thrilling contest that showcased the competitiveness of domestic one-day cricket.[42][43]
