Early life
Aimar Sher was born on 20 December 2002 in Kirkuk, Iraq, to an Assyrian family.[1][8] At the age of four, Sher relocated to Sweden with his family and grew up in Stockholm.[9] Sher's introduction to organized football occurred around the age of 10, when he joined the youth teams of local clubs Mälarhöjdens IK and Enskede IK.[9][1] These early experiences in Stockholm's suburban football scene helped nurture his skills and passion for the sport. This foundation paved the way for his move to the professional youth development program at Hammarby IF.[9]Personal life
Aimar Sher was born on December 20, 2002, in Kirkuk, Iraq, to an Assyrian family, an ethnic group with deep roots in the region's history. His Assyrian heritage underscores his strong cultural ties to Iraq, where Assyrians have long contributed to national identity through various fields, including sports.[1][10] At the age of four, Sher moved with his family to Sweden, where they settled in the Stockholm suburbs, shaping his bilingual upbringing amid dual cultural influences. His father named him Aimar in homage to Argentine midfielder Pablo Aimar, a nod to the family's enduring passion for football that influenced his early life.[11][12] Sher's Assyrian background and Swedish residency have endowed him with eligibility for multiple national teams, reflecting his intertwined Iraqi and Swedish identities. He has maintained family connections to Iraq, expressing appreciation for the supportive Iraqi community despite his primary life in Sweden.[10][12]Club career
Hammarby IF
Aimar Sher joined the Hammarby IF youth academy in 2013 at the age of 10 and progressed through the club's U17 and U19 levels, developing as a central midfielder known for his technical skills and vision. In 2020, to gain senior experience, Sher was loaned to IK Frej in Sweden's Division 1, where he made 7 appearances, helping him adapt to professional demands before returning to Hammarby's first team.[7][13] Sher made his senior debut for Hammarby in the Svenska Cupen on 21 August 2019 against IFK Luleå, at the age of 16.[14] His Allsvenskan debut followed on 25 September 2019 against IK Sirius, entering as a substitute in the 90th minute and becoming the youngest debutant in club history at 16 years and 9 months old.[15][16] Between 2019 and 2021, Sher accumulated 37 appearances across all competitions for Hammarby, scoring 1 goal and providing midfield depth during a competitive period that included winning the 2020–21 Svenska Cupen.[17][1][13]Spezia
In the summer of 2021, Aimar Sher transferred from Hammarby IF to Spezia in Serie A for a reported fee of €1.5 million, signing a four-year contract until June 2025 as a highly regarded young central midfielder.[11][18] Sher made his Serie A debut on 3 October 2021, substituting in at halftime during a 4-0 defeat to Hellas Verona, but this remained his sole appearance in Italy's top flight across all competitions, with no goals or assists recorded.[19][20] Over the 2021–22 and 2022–23 seasons, Sher faced significant challenges with injuries, including a broken arm that sidelined him early in his tenure and an unspecified injury the following year, resulting in him being relegated to the bench amid stiff competition for midfield positions.[19] To further his development, he was loaned to FC Groningen in January 2023. His contract with Spezia was mutually terminated on 1 September 2023, shortly after the club's relegation to Serie B at the end of the previous campaign.[18][21]Loan to FC Groningen
In January 2023, Aimar Sher joined FC Groningen on loan from Spezia until the end of the 2022–23 season, with the Dutch club holding an option to extend the deal by one year or make the transfer permanent.[22] The move came after limited opportunities at Spezia, where Sher had made just one appearance that season.[23] As a defensive midfielder, he provided rotational depth in a squad battling to avoid relegation from the Eredivisie.[17] Sher featured in six Eredivisie matches for Groningen during the second half of the campaign, accumulating 134 minutes without scoring or assisting.[17] Primarily deployed as a substitute, his appearances were sporadic amid the team's intense relegation struggle, which saw FC Groningen finish 18th and drop to the Eerste Divisie.[24] The high-pressure environment offered Sher exposure to competitive Dutch football tactics, though his limited starts highlighted the challenges of breaking into a side focused on survival. The loan concluded at the end of the 2022–23 season in summer 2023, with Sher returning to Spezia as neither the extension nor purchase option was activated. This period marked a developmental step for the young midfielder, emphasizing adaptation to a relegation-threatened team despite the modest playing time.[14]Sarpsborg 08
In January 2024, Aimar Sher joined Sarpsborg 08 on a free transfer from Spezia, signing a three-year contract as a central midfielder wearing the number 6 jersey.[1][7] Sher made his Eliteserien debut with Sarpsborg 08 during the 2024 season, quickly integrating into the squad and featuring in 27 appearances, during which he provided 2 assists.[25][17] His contributions helped solidify the team's midfield presence, drawing on his prior experience in Italy and the Netherlands for a smooth adaptation. In the 2025 season, Sher has continued to play a key role in midfield for Sarpsborg 08, making 17 appearances with 1 assist as of November 2025, contributing to the team's mid-table stability in the Eliteserien.[26] Following a challenging period at Spezia, his form has improved, showcasing versatility across defensive and attacking duties in the central midfield position.[7] In August 2025, Sher extended his contract with the club until 2028, signaling his commitment to the Norwegian side.[1]International career
Youth career with Sweden
Aimar Sher was eligible to represent Sweden at the youth international level due to his long-term residency in the country, having moved there at a young age from his birthplace in Kirkuk, Iraq.[11] This allowed him to progress through the Swedish Football Association's youth system, where he developed his technical skills as a central midfielder in various Scandinavian tournaments and friendlies.[27] Sher debuted for the Sweden U17 national team in 2018, earning 2 caps and scoring 1 goal. His international bow came on 18 April 2018 in a friendly match against Denmark during a four-nation tournament, where he netted Sweden's goal in a 1–2 defeat.[27] These early appearances highlighted his potential in youth setups focused on possession-based play and quick transitions.[1] He advanced to the U19 level in 2019–2020, accumulating 3 caps without scoring, including participation in UEFA European Under-19 Championship qualifiers.[11] Sher's involvement in these competitive fixtures underscored his growing role in the team's midfield, contributing to defensive solidity and creative passing.[1] Sher received call-ups to the Sweden U21 team from 2021 to 2024, making 5 appearances. His debut occurred on 7 September 2021 as a substitute in a 1–1 friendly draw against Bosnia and Herzegovina during a Balkan tour.[28] He featured in the 2023 UEFA European Under-21 Championship playoffs, further demonstrating his technical proficiency in high-stakes matches.[1] Across all youth levels, Sher earned 10 caps, often praised for his vision and ball control in Scandinavian youth competitions.[1] In 2025, Sher decided to switch his international allegiance to Iraq, acquiring citizenship and becoming eligible for the senior team.[1]Senior career with Iraq
In early 2025, FIFA approved Aimar Sher's eligibility switch to represent the Iraq national team, following his acquisition of Iraqi citizenship in February and registration with the Asian Football Confederation (AFC) on 25 February.[1][14] This decision leveraged his birth in Kirkuk, Iraq, on 20 December 2002, and his Assyrian heritage.[1][8] Sher made his senior debut for Iraq on 10 June 2025, starting as a defensive midfielder in a 2026 FIFA World Cup qualification match against Jordan, which Iraq won 1–0; he received a yellow card in the 37th minute and played the full 90 minutes.[29][30] His second appearance came on 14 October 2025, entering as a substitute in the 61st minute during a 0–0 draw with Saudi Arabia in another World Cup qualifier.[31][30] His third cap was on 13 November 2025, starting as a central midfielder against the UAE in a World Cup qualifier that ended in a 1–1 draw; he was substituted in the 79th minute after receiving a yellow card at the 71st minute.[30] As of November 2025, Sher had accumulated three caps for Iraq without scoring any goals.[30][5] Positioned primarily as a defensive midfielder, Sher has contributed to Iraq's midfield stability during these qualification campaigns, which also serve as preparations for the 2027 AFC Asian Cup amid ongoing team rebuilding under coach Jesús Casas.[1] His limited starts reflect a gradual integration, but his performances have shown promise in providing defensive cover and ball distribution in high-stakes matches.[32] His prior experience with Sweden's youth teams laid a foundational base for this international transition.[1]Career overview
