Amar Gopal Bose was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, to parents Noni Gopal Bose, a Bengali freedom fighter and academic, and Charlotte Mechlin, an American schoolteacher. His parents' intellectual backgrounds profoundly shaped his early interest in science and technology.

During World War II, when vacuum tubes were scarce, Amar Bose started a radio repair business to help support his family. This entrepreneurial endeavor sparked his interest in electronics and acoustics.
