A graduate of Boston University, Matthews briefly worked as a sports writer before entering politics in 2005 as a campaign worker in New Jersey.[1] Matthews has worked for the conservative Nevada Policy Research Institute since 2007, starting as the communications director and ultimately becoming president.[1] He was elected to the Nevada Assembly in 2020 after defeating incumbent Democrat Shea Backus, thus flipping the seat from Democratic to Republican.[2] He previously ran for a seat in the United States House of Representatives in Nevada, but came in fourth in the 2016 Republican primary, finishing behind the winner Danny Tarkanian, as well as second place finisher Michael Roberson, and third place finisher Michele Fiore. He was then hired as executive director of a conservative PAC tied to former Nevada Attorney General Adam Laxalt.[3] In 2018, Matthews worked for Adam Laxalt's campaign for Governor of Nevada,[4] but Laxalt was defeated by Democrat Steve Sisolak, and Matthews then successfully ran for the Nevada Assembly in the 2020 election. In 2022, Matthews chose not to run for reelection to the Assembly and instead entered the race for Nevada State Controller. He was unopposed in the Republican primary, and faced Democrat Ellen Spiegel in the November general election. Matthews won the election with 50.06% of the vote.

Comedy and writing career

Stand-up comedy

Matthews entered the scene in the early 2010s, leveraging his background as a former engineer and physics teacher to inform his observational and conceptual humor. In 2013, he placed third in the national RAW Comedy competition, Australia's largest open-mic event organized by the , delivering a set that advanced him to the finals alongside winner and runner-up Cameron Duggan. His performance in the RAW final, available on , showcased early material blending personal anecdotes with absurd logical extensions, earning him recognition as a promising newcomer. Following his RAW success, Matthews debuted his solo stand-up show at the 2014 , where it received a nomination for the Golden Gibbo Award, recognizing outstanding emerging talent. Critics described the hour-long set as "silly" yet "very clever," highlighting its playful exploration of scientific concepts through comedic absurdity, performed at venues like the Butterfly Club. While Matthews has not released a full stand-up special or embarked on extensive national tours, he has continued performing live sets at festivals and events, often incorporating satirical elements drawn from his writing experience. His stand-up style emphasizes intellectual wit over , aligning with his multifaceted career in writing and podcasting.

Television and sketch writing

Matthews began his television writing career contributing sketches and satirical segments to programs, with early credits including the short-form series Trip for Biscuits (2017), which consisted of 18 episodes each approximately 10 minutes long, featuring absurd humor and character-driven vignettes. He later joined the writing team for , an ABC satirical news parody show that employs to lampoon current events, politics, and media, with Matthews researching, writing, and occasionally performing in its segments across multiple seasons. In addition to Mad as Hell, Matthews co-wrote for We Interrupt This Broadcast (2023), a six-episode series blending mock news broadcasts with sketch elements to critique media sensationalism, produced for Australian television. His sketch work extends to collaborative projects, such as co-founding Stupid Old Studios (later rebranded Humdinger) in 2010 with fellow comedians Evan Munro-Smith, Bec Petraitis, Matt Stewart, and Alasdair Tremblay-Birchall, aimed at producing online sketches and short comedic films that gained traction on platforms like . Matthews has also performed in live sketch formats, including the 2018 Edinburgh Fringe show Sci-Fi Sketch Experience alongside Alasdair Tremblay-Birchall, which featured rapid-fire, absurd sci-fi themed sketches emphasizing wordplay and escalating absurdity for punchline delivery. Other television writing includes contributions to The Checkout, an ABC consumer advocacy program incorporating satirical sketches to expose misleading advertising and corporate practices. These efforts highlight Matthews' focus on concise, observational humor derived from real-world absurdities rather than broad caricature.

Satirical journalism

Andy Matthews contributes to satirical journalism through his regular articles for NewsThump, a UK-based website publishing parody news stories that mimic mainstream reporting to critique , society, and current events. His pieces employ exaggeration, irony, and absurd hypotheticals to highlight perceived absurdities in public figures and policies, often focusing on British , , and economic issues. Matthews has authored hundreds of such articles, as evidenced by the extensive pagination of his author archive on the site, spanning topics from fallout to diplomatic blunders. In his self-provided bio on NewsThump, Matthews states he writes "jokes about the imbeciles in the news" as an alternative to direct confrontation with real-world frustrations, underscoring a therapeutic intent behind the satire. For instance, on October 23, 2025, he published a piece claiming a political party—fresh from a member's conviction for Russian bribery—now solicits untraceable cryptocurrency donations, lampooning transparency lapses in campaign finance. Two days earlier, on October 22, 2025, he satirized U.S. President-elect Donald Trump's foreign policy rhetoric by portraying a fictional cancellation of peace talks with Vladimir Putin due to mismatched deadlines, exaggerating inconsistencies in negotiation timelines. Matthews' style aligns with NewsThump's format of , faux-objective headlines and articles that invert real news to expose hypocrisies, such as a September 9, 2025, where a privileged individual dismisses poverty's harms while advocating for others. His work frequently targets conservative policies and figures, including proponents annoyed by fulfilled warnings of economic downsides, as in an October 22, 2025, article. While NewsThump's editorial slant leans toward mocking right-leaning positions—a pattern observable across its content—Matthews' contributions maintain consistency in this vein without evident deviation toward balanced critique. This approach draws from broader traditions but remains niche to online outlets rather than mainstream journalistic .

The protagonists are Gustav, a goofy and optimistic pig prone to seeking trouble, and (short for Henrietta), a calm and organized dog who often mitigates the chaos. The inaugural volume, Gustav & : Space Time Cake, published in April 2022 by Red Comet Press, compiles three short stories: a to retrieve a lost , a time-travel mishap to the era, and a present-day gone awry. Matthews handles the writing, while provides black-and-white illustrations in a limited palette of , grays, and blacks, praised for their dynamic energy and expressiveness. The second installment, Gustav & Henri: Tiny Aunt Island, released in 2023 by Hardie Grant Children's , features three additional adventures, including a trip disrupted by a storm that strands the duo on a mysterious inhabited by tiny aunts. Reception and legacy

Achievements and recognition

Matthews placed third in the 2013 Raw Comedy national grand final, a competition organized by the Melbourne International Comedy Festival recognized as Australia's largest open-mic event for emerging comedians. He received a nomination for the Golden Gibbo Award, given annually by the Melbourne International Comedy Festival to the most outstanding newcomer, following his performances at the festival. In collaboration with Alasdair Tremblay-Birchall, Matthews earned another Golden Gibbo nomination in 2021 for their show Teleport. The studio he co-founded, Stupid Old Studios, secured five nominations at the 2019 Antenna Awards, community television honors presented by Melbourne's Channel 31.

Criticisms and stylistic analysis

Matthews' stand-up comedy often employs a narrative-driven approach, weaving ironic hypotheticals and theoretical frameworks into routines that prioritize conceptual exploration over rapid punchlines. In his 2014 show String Theory, the performance unfolded as a series of dense, interconnected stories loosely tied to concepts, resembling a theatrical reading more than standard observational stand-up. This stylistic density has drawn mixed responses, with reviewers observing that the introductory preamble in generated stronger laughs than the core material, which demanded sustained audience engagement with abstract ideas. Such structure risks overwhelming casual viewers, though it appeals to those favoring intellectual . In collaborative formats, like shows with Alasdair Tremblay-Birchall, Matthews adopts or parodies to dissect absurd societal or economic premises, emphasizing inventive and probing exaggeration for comedic effect. Critiques of his solo work highlight a reliance on familiar liberal-leaning observations, executed with sharp wit but lacking novelty in political or cultural commentary. His satirical sketches, produced through ventures like Stupid Old Studios (later rebranded Humdinger), similarly favor clever, scenario-based humor over edgier confrontation, contributing to a reputation for polished but occasionally restrained provocation. No major public controversies or backlash against Matthews' output have been documented in comedy industry reviews, aligning with his focus on niche, idea-centric humor rather than broad provocations.
