The Baojun Yep (Chinese: 宝骏悦也; pinyin: Bǎojùn Yuèyě) is a battery electric crossover city car manufactured by SAIC-GM-Wuling (SGMW) since 2023 under the Baojun brand.[2] "悦也" literally translates as "joy also" or "happy together", is the homophone of "越野" which means "offroad".

History

[edit]

In February 2023, the Chinese joint-venture SAIC-GM-Wuling introduced a new small city car in the form of a combination of a three-door hatchback with features reminiscent of large off-road vehicles such as the Suzuki Jimny.[3] The result was the Baojun Yep crossover.[4]

The Yep is distinguished by its angular silhouette with clearly defined wheel arches, black bumpers, and sill covers, as well as an imitation spare wheel on the trunk lid.[5] The vehicle also uses full LED lighting, with a characteristic arrangement of stripes on the front covers.[5] In addition, despite its small external dimensions, the Yep is a four-seater car that can accommodate two passengers in each row of seats,[5] which has been achieved with a length of less than 3.4 m (11 ft).[6]

The Yep is the first SUV with a 300 mm (12 in) by 256 mm (10.1 in) LCD screen on the rear exterior. The shape is similar to a wristwatch and is used to display messages, emojis, pictures or animations to other drivers on the road.[7][8][9]

The Yep was created for the dynamically developing electric car market in China in mind, with the start of sales scheduled for May 2023, just after the official presentation to the public at the 2023 Shanghai Auto Show.[5]

A 2-door pickup truck version with four-wheel drive (4WD) is in development.[10]

The Yep is powered by an electric motor located at the rear axle, which develops 67 hp and 140 Nm of maximum torque. It allows the driver to accelerate up to a top speed of 100 km/h (62 mph). The iron-phosphate battery allows the user to drive about 303 kilometers on a single charge in urban conditions according to the CLTC measurement cycle.[11]

2026 update

[edit]

The 2026 update for the Yep Plus was scheduled to be launched on May 27, 2025. It features updates to the interior and new battery capacity options. Domestic Sales in

The Yep, positioned as an affordable urban in 's competitive mini-EV market, has demonstrated consistent domestic performance since its introduction. In 2023, the standard Yep model achieved of 14,683 units, establishing an initial foothold among budget-conscious consumers seeking compact, city-friendly EVs. In the first four months of , the standard Yep recorded 9,428 units and the Yep Plus contributed 6,262 units, reflecting growing variant diversity and underscoring the model's appeal in urban mobility segments supported by local NEV incentives. The mini-EV segment as a whole experienced robust growth in 2025, driven by rising demand for low-cost personal transport, even as the Yep faced stiff competition from the dominant , which continued to lead with monthly sales exceeding 50,000 units. Sales of the standard Yep dipped in September 2025, influenced in part by a model-specific earlier in the year that temporarily affected consumer confidence. Despite this, the broader market positioning of the Yep as a versatile, subsidy-eligible urban EV helped sustain its relevance amid segment-wide expansion.

International Exports and Branding

The Baojun Yep, particularly its Plus variant, has been exported internationally under the rebadged name Chevrolet Spark EUV through ' global network. Initial market entries focused on emerging regions with growing demand for affordable electric vehicles. In , the Spark EUV launched on June 16, 2025, with sales commencing in late July, priced at approximately MXN 449,000 (USD 23,600). In , order books opened in July 2025, followed by full availability in September, at a starting price of R$159,990 (about USD 29,450), positioning it as Chevrolet's first entry-level electric crossover to emphasize urban electric mobility in . The model has also expanded to other South American countries and the , including a summer 2025 rollout in the UAE at AED 79,900 (roughly USD 21,750), alongside markets like , , and . Branding adaptations under the Chevrolet marque have significantly influenced pricing and market positioning. In China, the equivalent Baojun Yep Plus starts at around ¥93,800 (USD 13,000), but rebadging and import logistics more than double the cost abroad, reaching USD 23,600 in Mexico and higher in Brazil due to added compliance, distribution, and brand premium factors. To suit regional needs, particularly in hot climates like the Middle East and Latin America, the Spark EUV incorporates a liquid-cooled 42 kWh LFP battery to maintain performance and longevity under high temperatures. Right-hand drive configurations of the Yep have been developed for potential exports to Southeast Asia, aligning with GM's strategy to adapt the vehicle for diverse driving environments. Despite these efforts, the Spark EUV faces challenges in international markets, including elevated pricing from that reduces its affordability edge compared to the domestic Chinese version. It competes directly with established entry-level electric options, such as the E-Tech, which offers a lower of around R$99,990 (USD 18,000) in but with a range of approximately 250 km. Overall, these exports leverage the Yep Plus's compact design and 101 hp rear-mounted motor for urban appeal, though higher costs abroad test GM's ability to capture budget-conscious EV buyers.
