''Bas Kast'' is a German-Dutch science journalist and author known for his bestselling popular science books that make complex research on nutrition, psychology, and mental well-being accessible to general readers. [1] [2] His most prominent work, Der Ernährungskompass (The Nutritional Compass), has sold over a million copies worldwide and been translated into more than 20 languages. [1]
Born in 1973 in Landau, Germany, Kast studied psychology and biology at the University of Konstanz, Ruhr University Bochum, and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, where he worked with Marvin Minsky. [3] He originally intended to pursue a career in neuroscience but shifted his focus to science writing and journalism. [3] His books frequently draw on scientific evidence while incorporating personal experimentation to offer practical guidance on health and happiness. [1]
Kast's breakthrough came with Der Ernährungskompass (2018), which was named Science Book of the Year by bild der wissenschaft and reached widespread popularity. [3] He has since published additional titles including Kompass für die Seele (Compass for the Soul), which explores strategies for mental resilience through nature, exercise, and other evidence-based methods, as well as his first novel Das Buch eines Sommers (A Summer's Tale, 2020). [1] [3] Through his writing, Kast has established himself as a leading voice in German-language science communication on lifestyle and well-being topics. [2]
