Early life and background

Childhood and family

Benjamin Kheng was born on 15 August 1990 in Singapore. He grew up in a supportive, non-traditional Asian household alongside his younger sister, Narelle Kheng, and his parents, with a strong emphasis on love, empathy, and open communication rather than physical discipline.[9][1] From a young age, Kheng showed athletic promise, beginning competitive swimming training at six years old and eventually representing Singapore as a national youth swimmer.[10] His mother, Regina, a stay-at-home parent, was a central figure in his childhood, nurturing a healthy family dynamic and introducing him and his sister to music and the arts, which profoundly shaped his early interests.[11][9] In 2002, when Kheng was 12, his mother succumbed to breast cancer after a four-year battle, an event that shattered the family and left a lasting impact on his emotional development.[9][12] The tragedy occurred just two days before his Primary School Leaving Examination (PSLE), exacerbating academic struggles as he grappled with grief and performing poorly in subjects like mathematics while excelling in arts and literature.[13] His father stepped in as the primary provider and emotional anchor, managing the household amid the loss, while Narelle, who also pursued swimming at the Singapore Sports School, shared in the family's resilience and later bonded with her brother over creative pursuits.[9][14]

Education and early interests

Kheng developed a passion for swimming at the age of six, training rigorously and eventually competing as a national youth swimmer in Singapore.[15] He was recognized for his achievements in the sport, which became a significant part of his early life.[16] Alongside athletics, Kheng grew up in a musically inclined household, where classical music and folk songs were constantly played, fostering his initial exposure to music.[17] His father, who led the church choir and enjoyed artists like the Bee Gees, ABBA, Hall & Oates, and Simon & Garfunkel, further influenced these early musical interests through family jam sessions.[17] Kheng also showed enthusiasm for musical theater from a young age, admiring composers like Jason Robert Brown and performers like Lea Salonga.[17] His formal education began at Anglo-Chinese School (Primary), where he completed his primary schooling before transitioning to a specialized institution.[16] To pursue his swimming talent, Kheng enrolled at the Singapore Sports School and Anglo-Chinese School (Independent) for secondary education, balancing academic studies with intensive athletic training.[15] Although he later reflected on becoming bored with the repetitive nature of swimming practice, this period honed his discipline and competitive spirit.[18] After secondary school, Kheng pursued higher education at Republic Polytechnic, graduating with a diploma in Arts and Theatre Management from the School of Technology for the Arts.[19] This program aligned with his growing interests in performing arts and music, providing foundational skills in creative management and production.[20]

Music career

With The Sam Willows

Benjamin Kheng is a founding member of The Sam Willows, a Singaporean pop band formed in 2011 alongside his sister Narelle Kheng, Jonathan Chua, and Sandra Riley Tang. As the band's keyboardist, rhythm guitarist, and lead vocalist, Kheng served as a primary songwriter and frontman, contributing to their signature blend of pop, indie-folk, and electro-funk influences. The group initially gained traction through YouTube covers of popular songs, which helped them build a local following before transitioning to original material. The band released their debut EP, The Sam Willows, in 2012, followed by their first studio album, Take Heart, in 2015, which featured hits like "Take a Ride" and "All Time High." Their second album, I Know, But Where, arrived in 2018, showcasing more introspective themes with tracks such as "Save Myself" and "Robot." During this period, The Sam Willows performed at major events, including the Singapore Grand Prix, and toured internationally in cities like Seoul and Toronto, solidifying their status as a leading act in Singapore's music scene. The band's achievements include winning the m:idea Youth Choice Award for Best Band in 2013 and 987FM's Rising Star award that same year, as well as Best Song for "Save Myself" at the 2017 NEXT Music Awards. They were also recognized on Forbes' 30 Under 30 Asia list in the Entertainment & Sports category in 2019 for their contributions to regional music. Kheng's vocal and songwriting roles were pivotal in these successes, helping elevate the band's profile and influence on Singapore's indie-pop landscape. In May 2019, The Sam Willows announced an indefinite hiatus to allow members to pursue individual projects, marking the end of their active run as a group after eight years. Kheng has since reflected on the experience as a foundational chapter in his career, crediting the band with shaping his artistic growth.

Solo career and recent projects

Following the hiatus of The Sam Willows in May 2019, Kheng launched his solo music career with the single "Wicked," released that November as a digital download and streaming track.[21] This R&B-infused song marked his transition to independent artistry, exploring themes of temptation and self-reflection.[22] In June 2020, Kheng released his debut solo EP, A Sea That Never Stops, a six-track project leaning into R&B and pop elements.[21] The EP included "Wicked," alongside earlier singles "Find Me" and "Lovers Forever," plus three new songs: "Shiny," "Already Home," and "Make Do."[23] It received positive reception for its introspective lyrics and emotional depth, solidifying Kheng's solo presence during the COVID-19 pandemic.[24] Subsequent singles like "Shouldn't Have To Run" (with Joie Tan) in June 2021 and his first Mandarin track "Don't You Know" (duet with Tay Kewei) in August 2021 expanded his stylistic range.[25] Kheng's output continued to grow, with collaborations such as "We Are..." with Annette Lee in January 2023, a light-hearted nod to Singaporean Chinese culture.[26] In 2023, he released his first full-length album Gloomy Boogie in two volumes: GLOOMY BOOGIE Vol. 1 (four tracks, August 25) and GLOOMY BOOGIE Vol. 2 (four tracks, December 1), forming an eight-track conceptual piece blending pop, rock, and indie influences to address mental health and resilience.[27] Featuring guests like James Reid on "Rock Bottom Blues," the album peaked at notable positions on regional charts. In 2024, Kheng composed and performed "Not Alone," the theme song for Singapore's National Day Parade, released in May and performed live at the August event.[28] The uplifting anthem, co-created with the NDP community, celebrated national unity and garnered widespread acclaim.[29] He followed with singles like "REALLY IN LOVE" and "time with myself," maintaining momentum into the year's end.[30] As of 2025, Kheng has focused on eclectic singles, starting with the pop-punk track "SPINE" in April, which explores vulnerability in relationships.[31] In May, he collaborated with shazza on "Olivia Dean," a lovesick pop duet drawing from shared creative sessions.[31] September brought "Live A Little," a reflective single with an accompanying music video emphasizing fleeting joys.[32] Additionally, a SG60 version of "Not Alone" featuring RRILEY and Shazza was released to mark Singapore's 60th independence anniversary.[33] Kheng is scheduled to perform at the Sing60 Music Festival on December 6-7, 2025, alongside artists such as Mavis Hee and Shabir.[34]

His mother, a stay-at-home parent, was diagnosed with breast cancer and passed away when Kheng was 12 years old, an event that profoundly shaped his childhood and emotional development.[9] The family maintained a non-traditional Asian household dynamic, emphasizing empathy, love, and open communication over physical discipline, with Kheng's father reinforcing family as the central unit of support.[9] Kheng shares a particularly close bond with his younger sister, Narelle Kheng, a fellow musician and singer-songwriter. The siblings, who grew up together in Singapore, have frequently collaborated professionally and publicly described their relationship as one of unconditional support and mutual reliance, with Kheng often considering Narelle's compatibility when pursuing romantic interests.[44] Their shared experiences, including the impact of their mother's death, have strengthened their sibling connection, which they have explored in interviews and creative projects.[9] In his personal relationships, Kheng has been married to actress and DJ Naomi Yeo since February 2021, when they registered their marriage in a small ceremony amid pandemic restrictions.[45] The couple first met in 2018 while co-starring as husband and wife in the television series Dead Lucky, developing a friendship that evolved into romance the following year during the filming of The Intruders.[46] Kheng proposed to Yeo in March 2020 during a trip to New Zealand, a location significant to her due to prior time spent there for mission school.[47] Their relationship is characterized by honest communication, shared interests in spirituality and family, and a drama-free partnership built on best-friendship, with Yeo integrating warmly into Kheng's family circle.[46] As of 2024, the couple celebrated their third anniversary, opting for flexible traditions like international trips over rigid annual rituals.[48]

Public speaking and social issues

Kheng has been an active public speaker, particularly on platforms addressing youth experiences and personal challenges. In 2014, he delivered a TEDxYouth@Singapore talk titled "Walk With Your Mind; Run With Your Heart," where he shared his journey overcoming anxiety disorder by leveraging synaesthesia—a neurological condition blending senses, such as perceiving sounds as colors—to manage stress and build resilience.[49] The talk emphasized practical strategies for mental wellness, inspiring audiences including young people facing similar issues, with one listener crediting it for helping them through depression.[50] In 2015, Kheng co-presented "Keeping It Real" at TEDxNUS alongside Andrew Mark O, exploring authenticity in creative pursuits and personal growth.[51] His advocacy extends to mental health awareness, drawing from his own experiences with depression, anxiety, and synaesthesia. Kheng has openly discussed reaching points where he "couldn't human anymore," crediting therapy with providing essential tools for emotional regulation and wishing he had sought it earlier to normalize it beyond crisis moments.[52] In 2024, he participated in CalmCon's panel "How to Thrive Amidst Uncertainty," advocating coexistence with mental health challenges as akin to sharing space with a persistent companion, while challenging Asian cultural stigmas around vulnerability and grief.[53] He has also created content like a 2023 jingle on men's mental health to destigmatize seeking help and highlight available resources beyond personal networks.[54] On environmental issues, Kheng promotes sustainability through personal actions and public engagements. He eliminated single-use plastics, reduced paper waste by drafting lyrics digitally, and cited films like An Inconvenient Truth as pivotal in recognizing climate urgency, urging non-judgmental steps toward eco-friendliness.[55] In 2020, he performed an unplugged set at WWF Singapore's Earth Hour livestream, stressing collective small efforts to combat planetary emergencies and foster sustainable habits.[56] Additionally, he joined the National Environment Agency's "SAY YES to Waste Less" campaign, sharing practical tips on mindful consumption like portion control in meals.[57] Kheng's broader youth advocacy includes speaking on social causes, such as building resilience and positivity, often tying into his roles as a musician and former national swimmer to encourage young Singaporeans.[58]
