History

Founding and initial models (2006–2010)

Besturn, a under the First Automobile Works (, was established in 2006 to enter the mid-to-premium passenger car market in , leveraging FAW's expertise in automotive to offer vehicles with enhanced quality and features for domestic consumers. The brand's creation was part of FAW's strategy to develop independent passenger car lines beyond its joint ventures, drawing on technological collaborations to position Besturn as a competitive alternative to imported and joint-venture models in the sedan segment. The inaugural model, the Besturn B70, debuted on November 18, 2006, at the Ninth China (Beijing) International Automotive Industry Exhibition, marking FAW's first showcase of a self-developed passenger car brand. Based on the first-generation Mazda 6 platform—stemming from FAW's joint venture with Mazda established in 2005—the B70 was designed as a mid-size family sedan with a focus on safety, handling, and value. It featured Mazda-derived engines, including a 2.0-liter inline-four producing around 147 horsepower and a 2.3-liter variant delivering approximately 166 horsepower, paired with options for manual or automatic transmissions. Production commenced in 2007 at FAW's main assembly plant in Changchun, Jilin Province, with initial emphasis on building a reputation for reliability in the competitive Chinese market. In 2009, Besturn expanded its lineup with the B50, a compact sedan targeted at urban drivers seeking affordable yet stylish transportation. Like the B70, the B50 utilized a modified version of the 6 platform but with a shorter wheelbase for better maneuverability in city environments, incorporating design input from for a modern aesthetic. It was powered by a 1.6-liter producing 109 horsepower, emphasizing and ease of use for everyday commuting. Early production targets aimed for steady output to meet growing demand, with the model receiving positive reception for its balance of price and features upon launch. Initial sales reflected gradual market penetration, with the B70 achieving 28,246 units in 2007, rising to 50,018 in 2008 and 69,944 in 2009, before settling at 49,635 in 2010 amid broader economic shifts. The B50 contributed to this growth, selling 17,981 units in 2009 and surging to 82,576 in 2010, helping total Besturn volumes exceed 130,000 annually by the end of the period. This upward trajectory demonstrated increasing consumer acceptance of Besturn's Mazda-influenced engineering and positioning as a reliable domestic option.

International expansion and challenges (2011–2019)

Bestune's international expansion began in 2012 with the entry into the Russian market, where the company initially exported the B50 sedan to local dealerships. In June 2012, FAW delivered 500 units of the B50 compact sedan, priced between 499,000 and 599,000 rubles, marking an early push to establish a foothold in amid growing demand for affordable vehicles. This move was part of broader efforts by Chinese automakers to penetrate foreign markets, leveraging the B50's design roots in the first-generation platform for cost-effective production. In 2013, Bestune expanded its domestic lineup with the launch of the X80 crossover in , priced from 119,800 to 181,800 yuan, targeting the burgeoning segment with a front-wheel-drive layout based on an extended platform. The X80's introduction highlighted Bestune's focus on versatile family vehicles, but international rollout faced delays. By 2017, production of the X80 commenced in through a with , enabling local assembly to reduce import costs and comply with regional incentives. This facility in supported gradual market penetration, though overall exports remained modest compared to domestic volumes. The period was marked by significant challenges, including criticism of Bestune's reliance on aging Mazda-derived architectures, such as the outdated first- and second-generation platforms used for the B50 and B70 models, which struggled to compete with more modern offerings from rivals like and BYD. These designs, while reliable, were seen as lacking innovation in a rapidly evolving Chinese auto industry dominated by advanced technology and electrification trends from competitors. Exports to other regions, including in 2014 and the Middle East starting around 2016, achieved limited traction, with sales constrained by quality perceptions and intense global competition. To address branding issues and enhance global appeal, Bestune underwent a from Besturn to Bestune in 2018, while retaining its (Benteng), aiming to project a more contemporary image without altering core product strategies. This coincided with ongoing efforts to overcome operational hurdles, setting the stage for later domestic-focused restructuring.

Restructuring and modernization (2020–present)

Building on the 2019 spin-off of Bestune as an independent , in December 2020, restructured its operations by transferring Bestune from to become a direct of FAW Corporation Limited, effectively separating it from the truck division to streamline focus on passenger vehicles. This move aimed to enhance Bestune's independence and agility in responding to market demands for sedans and SUVs. To support its growth, Bestune underwent a significant capital increase in 2023, raising its registered capital by CNY 5 billion to approximately CNY 8.4 billion, with Yueda Automobile Group Co., Ltd. acquiring a 1.97% stake as a strategic . Following this infusion, ownership was distributed as follows: holding 86.16%, FAW Equity Investment at 11.87%, and Yueda at 1.97%. This financial boost facilitated investments in , development, and upgrades. A further capital increase of over CNY 8.5 billion was completed in 2025, with Yueda increasing its stake to 11.4%, primarily new (NEV) R&D, intelligent , and channel expansion. Shifting toward , Bestune introduced with models including hybrid variants of the T77 SUV and the NAT electric MPV in the early 2020s. The NAT electric MPV launched in 2024, designed specifically for autonomous services with a functional layout for ride-hailing, featuring a long and for passenger convenience. In 2025, key advancements included the launch of the T77 Pro, equipped with advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS) such as and lane-keeping assist to enhance safety and user experience. Additionally, the , a retro-styled electric city car, entered production in 2024. To meet rising demand, Bestune expanded production capabilities with smart factories in and , incorporating and digital technologies for efficient assembly of . These facilities support a target of 500,000 annual units by the end of 2025, emphasizing and in the competitive NEV sector. This modernization effort positions Bestune as a key player in FAW Group's strategy, prioritizing sustainable and intelligent vehicle technologies.

The Besturn B70 served as Bestune's sedan from 2006 to 2020, spanning three generations and establishing the brand's reputation for reliable engineering derived from Mazda-derived platforms. However, its dated design and inability to compete with newer rivals led to its discontinuation as Bestune pivoted toward SUV-focused lineups, with cumulative sales surpassing 500,000 units over its run. The Besturn B50, a compact sedan introduced in 2009 and produced until 2016, was phased out due to underwhelming sales totaling under units and intense competition from Bestune's emerging T-series vehicles. It saw limited international exposure through brief exports to starting in 2012. Bestune's first crossover, the X80, entered production in and lasted until 2022, but was discontinued following persistent quality issues and low demand, with peak annual sales reaching around 20,000 units. Russian assembly of the model, which began in 2017, ceased in 2020 amid broader market challenges. The Bestune E01 (2020–2023) was an electric with a 140 kW permanent-magnet motor and 52.5 kWh ternary lithium battery, offering 450 km NEDC range.
