They are composed of a chain of carbon atoms with alternating single and triple bonds, terminated by nitrogen atoms. Although not polyynes, cyanogen N≡C−C≡N (n = 0) and dicyanoacetylene N≡C−C≡C−C≡N (n = 1) also fit within this series.
