History

[edit]

Carleton Rode's name is of Anglo-Saxon and Viking origin and derives from an amalgamation of the Old English and Old Norse for a settlement of free peasants belonging to the de Rode family.[1]

In the Domesday Book, Carleton Rode is recorded as a settlement of 43 households in the hundred of Depwade. The village was divided between the estates of King William I, Alan of Brittany, William de Warenne, Roger Bigod and Eudo, son of Spirewic.[2]

Carleton Rode was the site of a semaphore telegraph station which connected the Admiralty in London to the fleet in Great Yarmouth.[3]

In 1960, an Orlit Post was constructed for the Royal Observer Corps which remained in use until 1968, when it was abandoned.[4] Apparently, renovation work began on the site in 2013.[citation needed]
