Clifford Chapin (born January 29, 1988) is an American voice actor and voice director specializing in anime dubs, video games, and animation projects.[1]
Chapin has built a prominent career in the English dubbing industry, voicing hundreds of characters across major anime series and interactive media since the early 2010s.[2] His breakthrough roles include the explosive Katsuki Bakugo in the long-running superhero anime My Hero Academia, for which he provides the English voice in the Funimation/Crunchyroll production.[3] He is also recognized for portraying the impulsive Conny Springer in Attack on Titan, the loyal Hideyoshi Nagachika (Hide) in Tokyo Ghoul, the young Saiyan warrior Cabba in Dragon Ball Super, and Himmel in Frieren: Beyond Journey's End.[4][5] In video games, Chapin lends his voice to dynamic characters such as Billy Kid in Zenless Zone Zero, Trousseau in Octopath Traveler II, and Thirain in Lost Ark, showcasing his versatility in action-oriented narratives.[6][7]
Beyond acting, Chapin serves as an ADR (Automated Dialogue Replacement) director and script adapter for several acclaimed anime adaptations, contributing to the behind-the-scenes quality of English localizations.[5] Notable directing credits include New Game!!, episodes of One Piece (such as the Episode of Skypiea special), Darling in the Franxx, SSSS.Gridman, and That Time I Got Reincarnated as a Slime.[5][8] His multifaceted involvement in the industry has earned him a dedicated following at conventions and among anime enthusiasts, where he frequently discusses his process and upcoming projects.[7]
In addition to these highlighted roles, Chapin has voiced guest and minor characters in over 100 other anime titles, including Harutora Tsuchimikado in Tokyo Ravens (2013), Raishin Akabane in Machine-Doll wa Kizutsukanai (2013), and Ranta in Hai to Gensou no Grimgar (2016), contributing to a diverse range of genres from shonen action to fantasy adventure.[33][5]
Early life and education
Childhood in Connecticut
Clifford Samuel Chapin IV[1] was born on January 29, 1988, in Griswold, Connecticut.[5] Growing up in Connecticut, Chapin developed an early interest in entertainment through studying the fundamentals of filmmaking during his childhood.[9] This hobby sparked his initial pursuits in creative media, laying the groundwork for his later transition to formal education in related fields.University studies
Chapin attended Hofstra University in Hempstead, New York, where he pursued a degree focused on the entertainment industry. He graduated in 2010[10] with a Bachelor of Science in Film Production, gaining foundational knowledge in filmmaking techniques, video editing, and production processes. This academic background equipped him with practical skills essential for entering the broader field of media and performance arts.[11][12] During his time at Hofstra, Chapin continued to develop his expertise in film and video production, engaging in hands-on projects that refined his technical and creative abilities. Building on his childhood interests in filmmaking in Connecticut, these university experiences sparked his interest in voice-over work, recognizing its potential as a specialized avenue within the industry he was studying. This realization during college laid the groundwork for his transition into professional voice acting upon graduation.[13]Professional career
Initial roles and training
Chapin entered the entertainment industry in a production capacity, working as a production assistant on television projects such as the TLC reality series Toddlers & Tiaras, as well as NBC Nightly News and Disaster Guy.[1] These early roles allowed him to gain practical experience in set operations and media production while building industry connections in New York.[14] Transitioning to voice acting, Chapin made his debut in 2013 with the role of David Sawicki in the visual novel Yousei by Sakevisual, a performance that earned him the VNs Now award for Best Male Voice Actor of the year.[15] This indie project marked his initial foray into character voicing, focusing on nuanced delivery in narrative-driven media. Shortly thereafter, following a recommendation from voice actor Chris Sabat to director Joel McDonald, Chapin affiliated with Funimation Entertainment and recorded his first anime dub role as Keita Tsuwabuki in Good Luck Girl! (2013).[16] Having recently graduated from Hofstra University with a Bachelor of Science degree in film production, he leveraged his formal education to immerse himself in professional dubbing sessions, emphasizing consistency and emotional range.[11]Breakthrough performances
Chapin's breakthrough in voice acting came in 2014 when he secured his first lead role as Raishin Akabane, the hot-blooded protagonist and skilled puppeteer, in the English dub of Unbreakable Machine-Doll. This role marked a significant step forward in his career, showcasing his ability to handle dynamic, action-oriented characters in a central position within Funimation's production. The series, centered on magical automata and intense battles at a prestigious academy, allowed Chapin to demonstrate his range in portraying youthful determination and strategic wit, earning him recognition among anime dubbing enthusiasts.[17] Building on this momentum, Chapin gained widespread acclaim for his portrayal of Connie Springer in Attack on Titan, beginning with the English dub's initial season in 2013 and continuing through subsequent installments. As the impulsive yet loyal member of the Survey Corps, Connie's arc—from comic relief to a battle-hardened survivor—highlighted Chapin's skill in evolving a character's emotional depth amid the series' high-stakes horror and action. His performance contributed to the dub's overall success, resonating with fans for capturing Connie's vulnerability and growth in the face of existential threats. Chapin's reputation solidified further with his iconic turn as Katsuki Bakugo in My Hero Academia, starting from the 2016 English dub premiere and spanning all seasons and films. Voicing the explosive, ambitious anti-hero with a quirk for nitroglycerin-based blasts, Chapin delivered a "stirring and nuanced" performance that balanced raw aggression with underlying complexity, making Bakugo one of the most memorable figures in modern anime dubbing. This role not only elevated Chapin's profile but also exemplified his expertise in high-energy, profanity-laced dialogue that drives the series' themes of heroism and rivalry.[18] His growing prominence extended into video games around 2017, particularly with the role of Cabba, the earnest Saiyan warrior from Universe 6, in Dragon Ball Super adaptations such as Dragon Ball Xenoverse 2 and later titles like Dragon Ball: Sparking! Zero. This casting broadened Chapin's reach beyond anime, allowing him to reprise the character's optimistic fighting spirit in interactive formats where players engage in tournament-style battles and multiverse crossovers. The role underscored his versatility in the expansive Dragon Ball franchise, bridging narrative dubs with gameplay voice work.[19]Directing and production work
Clifford Chapin's transition into directing began at Funimation Entertainment in the mid-2010s, where he took on roles as an ADR (automated dialogue replacement) director for English dubs of anime series, leveraging his growing experience in voice acting to guide recording sessions and ensure performance alignment with the original material.[5] His debut in this capacity came with the 2016 series Divine Gate, for which he served as the primary ADR director, overseeing the casting and dubbing process including voices like Ariton. This marked the start of his behind-the-scenes contributions, focusing on coordinating voice talent to capture the emotional intensity and narrative flow of Japanese productions. Chapin expanded his directing portfolio with episode-specific work on high-profile series, including My Hero Academia, where he directed episode 31 in 2017 and additional scenes across seasons, while also handling production coordination for dub sessions to streamline script adaptations and actor deliveries.[20] His acting role as Katsuki Bakugo in the same series occasionally overlapped with these directing opportunities, allowing him to influence performances from both sides of the booth. Other notable directing credits at Funimation include full-season oversight for Garo: Crimson Moon (episodes 1-12, 2019), the film Genocidal Organ (2017), and Dr. Stone: Stone Wars (2021), where he managed team coordination to adapt complex scientific and action-driven dialogues.[5] In production roles, Chapin contributed to dub coordination for My Hero Academia by facilitating script revisions and session logistics, ensuring timely delivery of episodes amid the series' rapid release schedule.[20] By the late 2010s and into the 2020s, Chapin's directing work extended to a broader range of titles, including SSSS.Gridman (2018), That Time I Got Reincarnated as a Slime (2018 onward), and the theatrical release Human Lost (2019), for which he served as English voice director, emphasizing immersive sound design and character consistency.[5] He also took on production coordination for ongoing dubs like Keijo!!!!!!!! (2017) and New Game!! (2017), where his efforts focused on aligning multicultural voice ensembles with the source material's tone.[21] In video games, Chapin directed voices for Dragon Ball Z: Kakarot DLC packs 4 and 5 (2020), coordinating high-energy battle sequences.[5] Following Funimation's merger with Crunchyroll in 2022, his contributions continued on various series. These roles highlighted his evolution from performer to key production figure, emphasizing efficient workflow in fast-paced anime dubbing environments up to 2025.Awards and accolades
Clifford Chapin has garnered recognition in the voice acting community for his performances in anime dubs and visual novels, earning awards that highlight his versatility and impact in the industry. In 2013, Chapin won the VNs Now Award for Best Male Voice Actor for his portrayal of David Sawicki in the visual novel Yousei, developed by Sakevisual. This early accolade marked a significant milestone in his burgeoning career within independent voice-over projects.[22] Chapin has received multiple honors from the Behind The Voice Actors (BTVA) Awards, a prominent fan-voted recognition for voice performances in animation and gaming. Notably, in 2017, he contributed to the win for Best Vocal Ensemble in an Anime Television Series/OVA for My Hero Academia, where he voices the explosive Katsuki Bakugo.[23] His involvement in the series' ensemble has been part of broader BTVA successes, reflecting the high regard for the English dub's cast dynamics.Personal life
Marriage to Kristen McGuire
Clifford Chapin and voice actress Kristen McGuire announced their engagement on June 18, 2021. The couple married following their engagement.[24] In their professional lives, Chapin and McGuire have collaborated on multiple anime dubs produced by Funimation, including voicing the leads in The Duke of Death and His Maid as the Duke and Alice Lendrott, respectively, across all three seasons. They also shared roles in Dr. Stone, with Chapin as the ambitious navigator Ryusui Nanami and McGuire as the priestess Ruri. These projects highlight their overlapping work in the industry, where McGuire has also served as an ADR director.[25][26] Chapin and McGuire have made numerous joint public appearances at anime conventions through 2025, including panels and guest spots at events such as MatsuriCon and Alabama Comic Convention, often discussing their shared experiences in voice acting.[27][28]Relocation to California
In 2023, Clifford Chapin relocated from Texas to Los Angeles, California, alongside his wife, Kristen McGuire, marking a significant shift in his professional base.[29] This move was primarily driven by expanded opportunities at West Coast dubbing studios, particularly Bang Zoom! Entertainment in Burbank, where Chapin had been contributing remotely prior to the relocation.[30] The proximity to such facilities facilitated greater involvement in in-person recordings and collaborations with LA-based talent and directors. The relocation positively impacted Chapin's career trajectory, enabling increased participation in high-profile West Coast projects through 2025. Notable examples include his voicing role in the English dub of Tougen Anki (2025), produced by Bang Zoom! Studios and streamed on platforms like Crunchyroll.[31] Additionally, his work on Zenless Zone Zero (2024), dubbed at Sound Cadence Studios' Los Angeles location, benefited from the easier access to the studio's Burbank facilities.[32] These opportunities have allowed Chapin to expand his portfolio in anime and video games while maintaining ongoing commitments to series like My Hero Academia.Filmography
