Affiliation and league participation
Columbus Crew 2 was established on December 6, 2021, as the official reserve team of Columbus Crew, a Major League Soccer (MLS) club based in Columbus, Ohio.[7] The team operates under the ownership of Columbus Crew, sharing resources such as facilities and technical staff to support integrated player development across the club's ecosystem.[7] This structure aligns with MLS's emphasis on professional pathways for young talent, positioning Crew 2 as a key component in the organization's youth-to-pro continuum. Crew 2 competes in MLS Next Pro, the third tier of the United States soccer pyramid, which serves as a professional development league for MLS-affiliated reserve sides.[8] The team joined as one of the 21 founding clubs in the league's inaugural 2022 season, with no prior professional competitive history.[8] Within MLS Next Pro's structure, Crew 2 participates in the Eastern Conference; it competed in the Central Division during the 2022 and 2023 seasons before transitioning to the Northeast Division starting in 2024, a realignment that continues into the 2025 campaign.[9] This divisional placement facilitates regional rivalries and optimized travel for matches against other Eastern Conference opponents. The primary purpose of Crew 2 is to bridge the gap between the Columbus Crew's MLS Next youth academy and the senior first team, providing a professional environment for emerging players to gain competitive experience.[7] By integrating academy graduates into a semi-professional setting, the team focuses on skill refinement, tactical maturity, and physical conditioning tailored to MLS standards, while also allowing select first-team players to maintain match fitness during injury recovery or rotation periods.[7] This developmental role underscores Crew 2's integration within the broader Columbus Crew system, emphasizing long-term talent cultivation over immediate competitive dominance.[1]Stadium and facilities
Columbus Crew 2 plays its home matches primarily at Historic Crew Stadium in Columbus, Ohio, with occasional home matches at Lower.com Field, a soccer-specific venue that opened on May 15, 1999, and served as the primary home for the Columbus Crew first team until their relocation to Lower.com Field in July 2021.[10][11] The stadium has a seating capacity of 19,968 and features natural grass turf optimized for professional soccer.[10] Following the first team's departure, Historic Crew Stadium was repurposed to support the club's developmental operations, including hosting Crew 2's fixtures while accommodating other events such as concerts and youth tournaments.[12] In 2024, the Columbus Crew completed construction of two new turf fields near Historic Crew Stadium and the OhioHealth Performance Center to further support player development.[13] Most of Columbus Crew 2's home MLS Next Pro regular-season and playoff matches are held at Historic Crew Stadium, with the venue shared occasionally for first-team training sessions or special events.[14] This arrangement allows Crew 2 to benefit from a professional-grade facility that fosters fan engagement and player development within the club's ecosystem. In 2022, for instance, the team hosted its Eastern Conference Final against Toronto FC II at the stadium, contributing to the league's inaugural playoff structure.[15] The team's training resources are integrated into the broader Columbus Crew complex at the OhioHealth Performance Center, a state-of-the-art facility adjacent to Historic Crew Stadium that opened in June 2021.[16] Spanning over 42,000 square feet, the center includes four outdoor practice fields, indoor training areas, eight locker rooms, medical and recovery suites, and video analysis rooms, supporting soccer operations for Crew 2, the first team, and the academy.[17][18] These facilities emphasize performance optimization and injury prevention, with amenities like hydrotherapy pools and a strength and conditioning gym tailored to professional standards.[19] As part of the 2021 transition following the first team's move, Historic Crew Stadium underwent upgrades to enhance its multi-use capabilities, including improvements to field maintenance systems and fan amenities to better accommodate reserve-team matches and community events.[11] Attendance at Crew 2 games varies, with regular-season matches typically drawing hundreds to low thousands, while playoff contests have attracted larger crowds; for example, the 2022 MLS Next Pro Cup Final—hosted at Lower.com Field—drew 7,446 fans, highlighting the potential for significant turnout in high-stakes games.[20]History
Formation and inaugural season (2022)
Columbus Crew SC announced the formation of its developmental second team, Columbus Crew 2, on December 6, 2021, as an inaugural member of Major League Soccer's new MLS Next Pro league set to begin in 2022.[7] The team was established to provide a professional pathway for academy prospects and first-team players needing match experience, playing its home games at Historic Crew Stadium.[7] On January 28, 2022, the club appointed Laurent Courtois as the inaugural head coach of Columbus Crew 2, drawing on his prior experience leading the Crew Academy's U-19 side and holding both UEFA and U.S. Soccer Federation 'A' licenses.[21] Crew 2 opened its debut season on March 26, 2022, with a 0–2 away loss to Inter Miami CF II at DRV PNK Stadium, marking the team's first competitive match in MLS Next Pro.[22] The squad secured its first victory a week later on April 2, 2022, defeating Chicago Fire FC II 1–0 at home, with the goal coming from academy product Noah Fuson in the 77th minute. Throughout the 2022 regular season, Columbus Crew 2 demonstrated dominance, finishing with a league-best record of 16 wins, 3 losses, and 5 draws, accumulating 53 points and claiming the Eastern Conference regular-season championship. The team led MLS Next Pro in goals scored with 62, showcasing an attacking prowess highlighted by forward Jacen Russell-Rowe, who netted a league-high 21 goals to earn the Golden Boot award.[23] In the playoffs, Crew 2 advanced by defeating Rochester New York FC 4–1 in the Eastern Conference Semifinal and Toronto FC II 4–3 in the Eastern Conference Final before capping the inaugural campaign with a 4–1 victory over St. Louis City 2 in the MLS Next Pro Cup on October 8, 2022, at Lower.com Field to secure the league's first championship.[15]Subsequent seasons (2023–2025)
In 2023, Columbus Crew 2 finished the regular season with a record of 16 wins, 9 losses, and 3 draws, accumulating 54 points and topping the Central Division while securing third place in the Eastern Conference.[24] The team advanced through the playoffs by defeating Orlando City B 2–1 in the first round, Philadelphia Union II 3–1 in the conference semifinals, and New England Revolution II 1–0 in the Eastern Conference Final, marking their second consecutive conference title appearance.[25] However, they fell 1–3 to Austin FC II in the MLS NEXT Pro Cup final, ending their title defense.[26] The 2024 season saw continued postseason success under new head coach Kelvin Jones, who had been appointed in March following Laurent Courtois's departure to CF Montréal earlier that year.[27] Crew 2 posted an 11–9–8 record over 28 regular-season matches, finishing seventh in the Eastern Conference with 45 points.[28] In the playoffs, they achieved a milestone by reaching the Eastern Conference Final for the third straight year—the first such streak in league history—highlighted by a dominant 6–2 quarterfinal victory over Inter Miami CF II.[14] They followed with a 3–2 semifinal win against Chicago Fire FC II but lost 0–4 to Philadelphia Union II in the conference final.[29] This run underscored the team's adaptability to league division realignments implemented that year, which expanded the Eastern Conference to 16 teams.[30] The 2025 campaign brought significant challenges, including high player turnover from promotions to the first team and persistent injuries that disrupted consistency throughout the roster.[1] A coaching transition compounded these issues, as Jones departed in December 2024 to pursue other opportunities, paving the way for former Columbus Crew midfielder and assistant Federico Higuaín to take over on January 29, 2025.[31] Under Higuaín, Crew 2 struggled to a 5–6–17 record across 28 matches, tallying just 22 points and missing the playoffs with a last-place finish in the Eastern Conference.[32] Despite the difficulties, the team showed late-season resilience, including a 4–0 home win over Inter Miami CF II on September 7 that provided a bright spot amid the struggles.[33]Players and staff
Current roster
As of November 2025, Columbus Crew 2 maintains an active roster of 26 players, focusing on developing young talent through a combination of academy graduates, homegrown players, and targeted international signings. The squad emphasizes prospects aged primarily between 18 and 23, with several teenagers integrated to gain professional experience in MLS Next Pro. Contracts vary, including short-term academy agreements, homegrown deals, and professional signings extending through 2025 or beyond, reflecting the club's strategy to bridge the gap between youth development and the first team.[34] On November 14, 2025, the club announced end-of-season roster decisions, exercising options for forward Kevin Gbamblé and midfielder Nicolas Rincón for 2026.[35] The roster is structured with 3 goalkeepers, 6 defenders, 9 midfielders, and 8 forwards, providing depth across positions for competitive play and player rotation. Key standouts include forward Kevin Gbamblé (#31), who contributed 6 goals and 3 assists in 14 appearances during the 2025 MLS Next Pro season, emerging as a dynamic attacker with pace and finishing ability. Similarly, forward Chase Mesner Adams (#52) led the team with 8 goals, showcasing his versatility and goal-scoring prowess in league matches. Midfielder Nicolas Rincón (#30) added 4 goals from midfield, highlighting the squad's creative depth.[36][37] Recent additions for the 2025 offseason bolstered the roster with promising talents such as midfielder Quinton Elliot (#32), defender Keesean Ferdinand (#40, 22, Canada/Haiti), forward Cristian Ortiz (#47, 18), defender Malcom Palacios (#48, 19, Honduras), midfielder J.J. Granda (#50, 19, Ecuador), and forward Brent Adu-Gyamfi (#42, 19, Ghana/USA), all signed to professional contracts to enhance defensive solidity and midfield energy. These signings, alongside academy promotions, underscore Crew 2's emphasis on blending local development with global recruitment.[38][39][40]| Position | No. | Player | Age | Nationality |

Players out on loan
As of November 2025, Columbus Crew 2 has three young players loaned out to USL Championship clubs to gain professional experience and senior-level minutes, helping to develop their skills beyond MLS Next Pro competition.[41][42] Midfielder Owen Presthus, a 19-year-old American who joined Crew 2 in 2023, was loaned to Hartford Athletic on August 15, 2025, for the remainder of the USL Championship season, ending November 30, 2025. Prior to the loan, Presthus had contributed three goals and nine assists in 51 appearances for Crew 2, including 17 matches in the 2025 MLS Next Pro season, demonstrating his attacking potential from midfield. The move aims to provide him with consistent playing time in a higher competitive environment to accelerate his development toward first-team opportunities with the Columbus Crew.[42] Another key loan is that of midfielder Cole Mrowka, a 19-year-old homegrown player signed to Crew 2 in 2023, who was sent to Colorado Springs Switchbacks FC on August 29, 2025, through the end of the 2025 USL Championship regular season. Mrowka, known for his technical ability and vision in central midfield, had featured in multiple MLS Next Pro games for Crew 2 prior to the loan, where the increased physical demands of USL play are expected to build his resilience and decision-making under pressure. This six-month arrangement supports Crew 2's strategy of exposing academy products to varied leagues for holistic growth.[41][43][44] Goalkeeper Luke Pruter, a 24-year-old dual US-Irish citizen signed to Crew 2 ahead of the 2025 season, joined Indy Eleven on loan September 10, 2025, for the rest of the USL Championship campaign, concluding November 30, 2025. Pruter's loan addresses depth needs at Indy while allowing him to compete for starts in a league with greater match intensity than MLS Next Pro, where he had been a rotational option. These loans collectively enhance team depth management at Crew 2 by rotating talent externally during the late season, with all players anticipated to return in December 2025 for potential integration into the first-team pathway or continued Crew 2 roles in 2026.[45][38][46]Coaching and technical staff
The coaching and technical staff of Columbus Crew 2 oversees the team's operations in MLS NEXT Pro, emphasizing player development and alignment with the first team's structure. Following the departure of Laurent Courtois, who coached Crew 2 from its 2022 inception through 2024 and achieved the inaugural MLS NEXT Pro Cup before his promotion to CF Montréal's head coach, the staff transitioned to new leadership in 2025.[14] Federico Higuaín serves as head coach, appointed on January 29, 2025, after serving as an assistant with the first-team Columbus Crew. A former Crew midfielder from 2012 to 2019, Higuaín brings experience from leading Inter Miami CF II in MLS NEXT Pro prior to his return. Under his tenure in 2025, Crew 2 recorded 5 wins in 28 regular-season games.[31][47][48] Assistant coaches include Josh Williams, who joined on February 10, 2025, as a key tactical supporter; Williams, a former Crew defender from 2012 to 2023, provides insights from his professional playing career. Alex Blackburn handles goalkeeper coaching, focusing on specialized training for the position.[49][50] The technical staff supports operational and developmental aspects. Jorge Gonzalez acts as performance coach, managing fitness and conditioning programs. Alessandro Burlew serves as data and video analyst, aiding tactical preparation. In youth integration, Dan Lock oversees coaching and individual development for Crew 2 and the academy since joining in 2022, while Brian Bliss was named academy director on June 9, 2025, to lead broader talent pathways. Medical leadership is provided by Sara Kusner, head athletic trainer, ensuring player health and recovery. Additional support comes from Claire Quaassdorff as soccer operations manager and Caden Fergison as equipment manager.[50][51][52]Records and statistics
