Congregation of Annihilation is the thirteenth studio album by American heavy metal band Metal Church, released on May 26, 2023 through Rat Pak Records.[1] It is the only album to feature vocalist Marc Lopes, who replaced Mike Howe a year after the latter's death, and their last with bassist Steve Unger and drummer Stet Howland.

Composition

Metal Church guitarist Kurdt Vanderhoof described the album as "starting a new chapter in the Metal Church legacy. I really love this album. It's a fresh approach for us in one way, but also a return to the very beginnings of Metal Church as part of the New American Thrash Metal movement. This record contains some of the most aggressive songs we have recorded. I hope the fans will like it as much as we do." Marc Lopes also added that "I am beyond honored to be part of carrying on this legacy into a new era of Metal Church. Working with Kurdt and a band that was a huge influence of mine growing up was a surreal experience, to say the least. For me there was no point in trying to imitate what was already done to perfection. So, with respect to the past, we moved forward to a new chapter and here we are!"[2]

Congregation of Annihilation is the thirteenth studio album by the American heavy metal band , released on May 26, 2023, through Rat Pak Records in and Reaper Entertainment in Europe. The album marks the band's first release following the death of former vocalist in 2021 and introduces Marc Lopes as the new frontman, who joined in 2022 after a period of lineup instability that also included the passing of original drummer Kirk Arrington earlier in 2023. Produced by founding guitarist , it features the current lineup of Vanderhoof and Rick Van Zandt on guitars, Marc Lopes on vocals, Steve Unger on bass, and Stet Howland on drums. The album consists of eleven tracks, blending thrash and elements with dense riffs, precise soloing, and mid-tempo structures that evoke the band's early sound from albums like their 1984 self-titled debut and The Dark (1986), while incorporating a more modern production. Standout songs include "Me the Nothing" for its edgy heaviness and , "Children of the Lie" for its dark atmosphere, and the title track for its adrenaline-fueled chugging. Themes across the record explore , , religion, and societal lies, delivered through Lopes' powerful but occasionally overwrought vocals. Upon release, Congregation of Annihilation received generally positive to mixed reviews from critics, who praised the band's resilience amid tragedies and the return to riff-heavy aggression but noted some generic songwriting and production that lacked distinctiveness. On , it holds an average rating of 82% based on multiple reviews, while outlets like Angry Metal Guy awarded it 2.5/5 for its forced attempts at recapturing past glory, and Metal-Rules.com gave it 3/5, highlighting strong individual tracks amid overall similarity. The album underscores Metal Church's enduring legacy in the heavy metal scene, continuing their tradition of socially conscious lyrics and technical prowess despite ongoing challenges.

Background

Lineup changes

The death of Metal Church's vocalist on July 26, 2021, from suicide, profoundly affected the band, halting their creative momentum in the wake of their 2018 album Damned If You Do, during which time guitarist had been collaborating with Howe on new material. In the summer of 2022, enlisted Marc Lopes as their new lead vocalist to continue forward. Lopes brought extensive experience from fronting bands including and Let Us Prey, as well as prior stints with . The album's recording lineup consisted of Lopes on vocals, Vanderhoof and Rick Van Zandt on guitars, Steve Unger on bass, and Stet Howland on drums. Tragically, original drummer Kirk Arrington—who had departed the band in 2006 due to long-term health complications from —passed away on May 22, 2023, at age 61 from an unspecified illness, just four days before Congregation of Annihilation's release. Following the album's release, the band faced further challenges. As of 2025, they canceled all 2024 tour dates due to Vanderhoof's ongoing back injury, and Lopes has expressed about the band's future, stating in January 2025 that he had not heard from any members in a long time. The group released a live , The Final Sermon, in July 2024.

Album development

Following the death of vocalist in July 2021, began songwriting for what would become Congregation of Annihilation in late 2021, marking a deliberate effort to honor the band's legacy while forging ahead. Guitarist and primary songwriter led the process, drawing on instrumental sketches initially conceived with Howe in mind but pivoting to create fresh material that captured renewed intensity. Demos were completed by mid-2022, prior to the arrival of new vocalist Marc Lopes in the summer, allowing the band to refine the core structures without vocals. Vanderhoof described the album as a "new chapter" in Metal Church's history, blending the fresh energy of the evolving lineup with the band's foundational roots, a vision he announced in early 2023 during promotional reveals. Songwriting remained predominantly under Vanderhoof's direction, emphasizing riff-driven aggression and adrenaline-fueled momentum to evoke the raw power of early works like the 1984 self-titled debut, while contributions from Lopes focused on lyrical adaptations tailored to his dynamic vocal style—incorporating metaphorical critiques of modern society without straying from the band's thematic core. This approach represented a conscious shift away from the more experimental and brooding elements explored in prior releases, such as the 2018 album Damned If You Do, toward unyielding, high-octane tracks that prioritized thrash precision and immediacy. Vanderhoof noted that early demo iterations leaned harder into rock-oriented grooves, but feedback during Lopes' integration prompted a heavier reconfiguration, ensuring the final songs delivered "thrasher than we've ever done before" while serving as a tribute to Howe's influence.

Recording and production

Studio process

The recording of Congregation of Annihilation took place primarily at in , Washington, commencing in late 2022 and concluding by early 2023. Sessions emphasized capturing the band's live energy, beginning with the rhythm section—bassist Steve Unger and Stet Howland—laying down foundational tracks to establish a solid groove before proceeding to other elements. As the primary songwriter and producer, adopted a hands-on approach, directing guitar overdubs alongside Rick Van Zandt to layer in the album's thrash-infused riffs and solos. One key challenge involved adapting to vocalist Marc Lopes' delivery, as his East Coast residence in New York necessitated some remote collaboration during the process, though core vocal tracking occurred in .

Technical aspects

The production of Congregation of Annihilation was led by Metal Church's founding guitarist and primary songwriter , who also took on engineering duties. Johnny Hyatt provided additional engineering support, particularly for the drum tracking, reprising their successful collaboration from the band's prior album Damned If You Do. This approach resulted in a sound that blends modern compression with a vintage thrash pedigree, evoking the raw aggression of Metal Church's 1980s output while delivering contemporary clarity and punch. The drum sound features hammering rhythms and solid propulsion, enhancing the album's high-energy drive without overpowering the mix. Guitar tones stand out as massive and biting, ideal for the riff-heavy structures and precise solo overdubs that define tracks like "Pick a God and Prey" and the title song. The overall mix prioritizes density and note-packed arrangements, balancing thick palm-muted passages with adrenaline-fueled chugs to maintain a meaty studio presence that avoids overly polished digital effects. This technical execution underscores the album's thrash revival intent, ensuring a cohesive, impactful listening experience rooted in the band's classic style.

Music and lyrics

Musical style

Congregation of Annihilation represents a return to heavy metal roots infused with strong influences, characterized by faster tempos and prominent chugging riffs that distinguish it from the more melodic approach of Metal Church's preceding album, Damned If You Do (2018). The record emphasizes aggressive, adrenaline-fueled compositions with note-dense riffing and precise soloing, evoking the band's early thrash-oriented sound from albums like (1984). This evolution is marked by a harder, less experimental edge compared to recent works, prioritizing mid-tempo grooves and tracks that maintain melodic accessibility while amplifying intensity. The album incorporates elements, particularly in tracks like the title song, featuring double-time rhythms and syncopated choruses that add a rhythmic punch alongside the thrash backbone. Guitar work by and Rick van Zandt drives the sound through dense, riff-centric structures bolstered by dual harmonies, delivering razor-sharp leads and beefy tones that underscore the band's classic heavy metal framework. The rhythm section, including Stet Howland's top-notch drumming and Steve Unger's blistering bass, provides a solid foundation with rampant percussion that enhances the overall frenetic energy. Vocally, Marc Lopes brings an aggressive style marked by high-pitched yelps, mid-range power, and sneering delivery, a shift from Mike Howe's smoother, more restrained performance on prior albums. His approach echoes David Wayne's intense screams while incorporating raspy growls and wails, contributing to the album's heightened aggression and fitting seamlessly within Metal Church's traditional vocal mold. This vocal intensity complements the instrumentation, creating a cohesive sonic assault that prioritizes raw power over subtlety.

Lyrical themes

The lyrics of Congregation of Annihilation center on themes of societal deception, , , and personal judgment, reflecting a critical examination of modern power structures and individual accountability. In "Pick a God and Prey," vocalist Marc Lopes critiques blind faith and religious manipulation, portraying as a tool for control that suppresses personal discernment and fosters division among believers. This track urges listeners to question imposed doctrines and embrace individual moral judgment rather than passive adherence, aligning with the album's broader motif of awakening to deceptive influences. The title track, "Congregation of Annihilation," delves into "divine intoxication" as a for how leaders succumb to corrupt power, leading to and anti-war sentiments through of blood-drenched conflict and veils of deception. depict rulers embracing war's savagery while spewing corruption, emphasizing how elite manipulation perpetuates global chaos for personal gain. Lopes, who penned all the album's lyrics, contributed by layering acidic, confrontational words over Kurdt Vanderhoof's riff-driven foundations, infusing them with a spitfire delivery that heightens savagery through emphatic yelps and snarls. This approach allowed for a raw, metaphorical portrayal of contemporary unawareness and puppet-like obedience to unseen masters. Overall, the lyrical tone is dark and relentless, shifting from the more introspective style of Mike Howe's era to direct, sarcastic confrontations that demand immediate engagement with societal ills.
